Threads and Cloths in Dragonwilds: Five Threads, Seven Cloths, and a Harness at 9 Metres

A loom and spinning wheel indoors in Ashenfall.

Dragonwilds' textile chain is two stations deep and completely rigid: fibres become thread at the spinning wheel, thread becomes cloth at the loomfive threads and seven cloths in total — and one of those cloths needs an upgrade placed within 9 metres of the loom to exist at all.

It is also the only part of your base that requires a roof. Every heavy processing station refuses one; the spinning wheel and loom insist on it.

The Five Threads

Card listing Dragonwilds' five threads and their inputs.

Everything below is made at the spinning wheel.

ThreadInputArtisan XP
Coarse thread1 Flax or 3 Coarse Animal Fur20
Wool thread1 Fleece or 3 Soft Animal Fur40
Fine thread4 Corpse Cotton20
Desert threadDesert Weed
Mystic thread4 Mystic Fibres40

Two threads have a fur fallback at a three-to-one rate. One flax or three coarse animal fur; one fleece or three soft animal fur. The plant route is three times more efficient, but the fur route means a hunting trip is never wasted.

Wool thread pays double the XP of coarse thread — 40 against 20 — for a comparable input, which makes fleece the better Artisan training material.

Fine thread is the expensive one at four corpse cotton per thread, and corpse cotton comes from zogres and from corpse cotton plants, which the description notes are "volatile bulbous plant[s] that explode when hit."

Flax is a gateway item. Collecting it for the first time unlocks both the spinning wheel and the fletching bench, and it grows in Bramblemead Valley, Fractured Plains and the Stormtouched Highlands.

The Seven Cloths

Padded cloth is two full cloths deep. Working back through the chain, one padded cloth costs 3 coarse thread and 3 wool thread — which at the plant rate is 3 flax and 3 fleece, and at the fur rate is 9 coarse animal fur and 9 soft animal fur.

Desert cloth is the only one that needs a non-textile ingredient. Its 3 cactus fibres come from the tannery, where one fibrous pipe cactus yields three fibres — so one desert cloth needs one pipe cactus exactly.

Rough cloth's use list is narrower than it looks: rugs and Wizard armour. If you are not a mage and not decorating, it exists mainly as half of a padded cloth.

The Loom Harness

Card explaining the Dragonwilds loom harness placement rule.

The harness is a production upgrade that adds a slot to the loom, and without it padded cloth cannot be made at all. Its rules are unusually specific:

  • It must be placed within 9 metres of a loom.
  • Each harness supports a single loom. Placed between two, only the closest loom receives the extra slot.
  • The recipe needs iron. You must gather iron ore and smelt it into iron bars; the pop-up appears after collecting iron bars.
  • And you must interact with the loom itself, or — in the wiki's words — the harness "will never show up in the Build Menu."

That last condition is the one that strands people. Having iron bars is not enough; the game wants you to touch the loom before it offers you the upgrade.

If you run two looms, you need two harnesses. There is no sharing, and the closest-loom rule means a harness placed carelessly between them upgrades the wrong one.

The Roof Rule, Inverted

StationRoof
Spinning wheelRequires a roof
LoomRequires a roof
GrindstoneMust not have one
SawmillMust not have one
FurnaceMust not have one
Blast furnaceMust not have one

Design the base around this split from the start. A textile room and a processing courtyard are two different spaces, and a single covered workshop cannot hold both.

Both textile stations also process slowly, so the same trick applies as elsewhere: fill them before sleeping.

Unlock order is worth knowing too. The spinning wheel unlocks on your first flax; the loom unlocks on obtaining a bronze bar; the harness needs iron bars plus a loom interaction. Textiles therefore track smithing progress, not farming.

A textile room with a harnessed loom is base infrastructure — built once, used by everyone, and worth keeping standing between sessions. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall persistent with automatic updates and one-click backups.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds' textile chain runs fibres → spinning wheel → thread → loom → cloth, with five threads and seven cloths. Coarse thread takes 1 flax or 3 coarse animal fur; wool thread takes 1 fleece or 3 soft animal fur and pays double the Artisan XP at 40; fine thread is the expensive one at 4 corpse cotton; desert thread comes from desert weed; and mystic thread takes 4 mystic fibres. On the loom, 3 coarse thread makes rough cloth, 3 wool thread makes wool cloth, 3 desert thread plus 3 cactus fibres makes desert cloth, 3 fine thread makes fine cloth for power level 5 armour, 3 mystic thread makes mystic cloth, desert cloth plus 9 Shimmerscale Powder makes infinity cloth for power level 7, and padded cloth needs one of each basic cloth — working back, 3 flax and 3 fleece, or 9 coarse and 9 soft animal fur. Padded cloth is impossible without the loom harness, which must sit within 9 metres, supports one loom with the closest winning, and only appears in the Build Menu after you have iron bars and have interacted with the loom. And uniquely, both textile stations require a roof where the grindstone, sawmill, furnace and blast furnace all refuse one.
