The Three Treasure Hunts in Dragonwilds, Walked Through

Card listing Dragonwilds' three treasure-hunt activities and their prerequisites.

Dragonwilds hides three multi-step treasure hunts across Ashenfall, and each one pays out something you cannot craft. The Statues of Saradomin want three specific gemstones. X Marks the Spot wants you to read four dead men's diaries. Scarecrow Scavenging starts with a key from an NPC nobody talks to. All three are easy to walk past for fifty hours. Here is where each one starts and what it gives you.

On sourcing. Jagex mention these only in passing. The locations and rewards below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.

What Each One Requires

ActivityPrerequisite
Statues of SaradominNone
Scarecrow ScavengingUnlock the Ghornfell region
X Marks the SpotUnlock the Fellhollow region
Buried treasuresUnlock Fellhollow, and carry any spade
Agility coursesAn Agility level per course
Fight CaveComplete Icthlarin's Little Helper
Nightmare CruciblePartial completion of Icthlarin's Little Helper

Two entries there are worth pulling out.

Statues of Saradomin has no prerequisite at all — you can start it in your first hour, and most players never notice it exists.

The Nightmare Crucible needs only partial completion of Icthlarin's Little Helper, while the Fight Cave needs the full quest. The Crucible opens earlier than the Fight Cave, which is the reverse of how most people assume the desert content is ordered.

And buried treasure needs a spade in your inventory — not in a chest at base. That is the usual reason a marked dig site does nothing.

Statues of Saradomin

Card walking through the Dragonwilds Statues of Saradomin activity.

The activity starts in Bramblemead Valley, east of Crasorak Kara — the first vault.

You need three gemstones before you set out: one Opal, one Jade and one Sapphire. Each goes into a different statue, and each returns an Emblem.

Statue locationInsertReceive
Whispering Swamp — north-west cornerOpalOpal Emblem
Fractured Plains — central, east of the tower and west of a lake, on the lower side of a small cliffJadeJade Emblem
Stormtouched Highlands — north-east portion, along the cliff edgeSapphireSapphire Emblem

Bring all three gems with you. The statues are in three different regions and the route between them is long — discovering you brought the wrong gem at the third statue is an avoidable trip.

Gems come from mining. Gem Prospector at Mining 16 means "mining ore now sometimes produces gemstones", and Accelerated Veins at Mining 90 adds a gemstone chance to Divine Rock veins. If you have no opal, mine rather than hunt.

X Marks the Spot and Scarecrow Scavenging

Card walking through X Marks the Spot and Scarecrow Scavenging in Dragonwilds.

X Marks the Spot requires Fellhollow, and the task is to find four skeletons wearing red hoods and read what they left behind:

SkeletonDocument
Nolan ScatheNolan Scathe's Journal
Eleanor ScatheEleanor Scathe's Diary
Samuel MalciferSamuel Malcifer's Journal
Winston HenningWinston Henning's Diary

You can start with any skeleton — there is no required order. The treasure itself sits in a chest next to skeleton arms marking the X.

    The rewards are the point:

  • PLAN: Spectral Book
  • Scratchy Sackclotha vestige, and therefore a permanent recipe unlock
  • Various resources

Scarecrow Scavenging requires Ghornfell, and it starts with a conversation most players never have: speak to Joe and get the Scarecrow's Key.

The scarecrow is "just south of the trisection of the river that acts as a border for the Fractured Plains and Stormtouched Highlands."

From there it is a three-map chain, each map leading to the next:

  1. Map 1dig in the loose dirt next to the scarecrow.
  2. Map 2 — found at the location Map 1 points to.
  3. Map 3 — found at Map 2's location.
  4. The treasure — dig at the final site.

Each stop also carries lore, so the activity doubles as a story thread rather than a pure fetch quest.

Spectral Birds and the Rest

Card explaining Dragonwilds Spectral Birds and remaining activities.

Spectral Birds are the simplest activity in the game and one of the most useful. Found in Fellhollow, on ruined buildings, they are "Power level 1 non-aggressive spirit birds" that look like spectral Gyrfalcons.

PropertyValue
Power level1
Health1
AggressiveNo
Weakness / ResistanceNone

One health, no aggression — they die to anything.

And the drop is what matters:

ItemQuantityRarity
Soul Fragment12–15Common
Ectoplasm1Uncommon

12–15 Soul Fragments from a one-health bird is an extraordinary rate, because Soul Fragments are Fellhollow's currency — the one spent at Death's Exchange. If you are short of Soul Fragments, hunting birds beats fighting undead.

The remaining activities round out the list: Spectral Platforming in Fellhollow, Letters for the Dead as a post-quest activity, Agility courses gated per region, and buried treasures under disturbed ground.

On a shared server these suit different people. The treasure hunts are solo-friendly and interruptible; the Fight Cave and Nightmare Crucible need a scheduled group. A mixed-availability group can keep everyone progressing by splitting along that line.

Practical tips

  • Statues of Saradomin needs no prerequisite — you can start it in hour one.
  • Bring one Opal, one Jade and one Sapphire before setting out; the statues are in three regions.
  • X Marks the Spot needs Fellhollow — find four red-hooded skeletons, in any order.
  • Its reward includes Scratchy Sackcloth, a vestige and permanent recipe unlock.
  • Scarecrow Scavenging starts with Joe — get the Scarecrow's Key, then dig beside the scarecrow.
  • Buried treasure needs a spade in your inventory, not at base.
  • Spectral Birds have 1 health and drop 12–15 Soul Fragments — Fellhollow's currency.
  • The Nightmare Crucible opens on partial quest completion; the Fight Cave needs the full quest.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

Treasure hunts are the content that suits a group whose members log in at different times — solo-friendly, interruptible, and progressing the same shared world. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds hides three multi-step treasure hunts. Statues of Saradomin has no prerequisite at all and starts in Bramblemead Valley, requiring one Opal, one Jade and one Sapphire for statues in the Whispering Swamp, Fractured Plains and Stormtouched Highlands. X Marks the Spot needs Fellhollow and asks you to find four red-hooded skeletons — Nolan and Eleanor Scathe, Samuel Malcifer and Winston Henning — in any order, paying out the Spectral Book plan and Scratchy Sackcloth, a vestige. Scarecrow Scavenging needs Ghornfell and begins by talking to Joe for the Scarecrow's Key, then following a three-map chain from a scarecrow south of the river trisection. Alongside them, Spectral Birds in Fellhollow have 1 health, no weakness and no aggression yet drop 12–15 Soul Fragments — making them the fastest source of the currency spent at Death's Exchange. And note the ordering quirk: the Nightmare Crucible opens on partial completion of Icthlarin's Little Helper, while the Fight Cave requires the whole quest.
