The Sniffer in Minecraft: Hatching, Ancient Seeds, and Breeding

The sniffer never spawns on its own — the only way to get one is to hatch a sniffer egg, and from there almost everything about it runs on documented timers: how long an egg takes to crack, how long a baby sniffer takes to grow up, and how long an adult has to wait between digs. Minecraft.wiki describes it plainly: "A sniffer is an ancient passive mob that spawns only by hatching from sniffer eggs. It looks for and digs up torchflower and pitcher plant seeds in dirt, grass, and moss blocks." The sniffer won the 2022 Mob Vote at Minecraft Live 2022 and shipped in Java Edition 1.20 (snapshot 23w12a) and Bedrock Edition 1.20.0, as part of the Trails & Tales update. This guide covers getting an egg, hatching it, how the adult digs up seeds, what those seeds grow into, and how breeding and growth work, with the exact numbers the wiki gives for each step.
Getting a Sniffer Egg and Hatching It
The wiki lists two ways to get an egg: "A sniffer egg is a block that can be brushed out of suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins, or obtained by breeding two sniffers." Breeding needs a sniffer already, so brushing is how most players get their first.
Brushing isn't instant. Suspicious sand "can be brushed to extract unique structure-dependent loot from it," and extraction runs in four stages totaling 6 + 20 + 30 + 40 = 96 game ticks. Per the wiki, that's 4.8 seconds before the item pops out and the block converts to sand.
The egg then has to be placed to hatch. Placed eggs "crack over time and hatch after cracking twice," and hatch time depends on the block underneath: "They hatch in 10 minutes when placed on moss blocks or 20 minutes when placed on any other block (including pale moss blocks)." Since 20 ÷ 10 = 2, moss cuts the wait exactly in half — a 10-minute saving over any other surface.
What walks out is a snifflet, not an adult — growth is covered below. An adult sniffer has 14 health points ({{hp|14}}, i.e. 7 hearts) once fully grown, per the source.
How Sniffers Dig Up Ancient Seeds

An adult sniffer presses its snout to the ground, then digs. Per the wiki, sniffers "use their snouts to dig into the ground until they get torchflower seeds or a pitcher pod, with an equal chance of digging up either one" — a straight 50/50 split. The blocks it will dig on are listed specifically: "dirt, grass blocks, moss blocks, mud and podzol."
Digging isn't on demand, though. "After sniffing out seeds, an eight-minute cooldown is activated before it can search again," so one sniffer produces at most a seed roughly every 8 minutes of active searching. The source also lists when it can't dig at all: it "can only dig on the ground and not while leashed, in water, panicking, or in a boat or minecart."
Torchflowers and Pitcher Plants: What the Seeds Grow Into

Torchflower seeds "grow into torchflowers and are also the item used to breed and tempt sniffers" — the same drop that feeds a farm is also the breeding item, covered next. "A torchflower is an ancient flower obtained from harvesting torchflower seeds. It can be crafted into orange dye," and suspicious stew made with one "gives Night Vision for 5 seconds."
The other possible drop, a pitcher pod, grows into something taller: "A pitcher plant is a tall ancient flower that grows from a pitcher pod." As a tall (double) flower, it occupies two vertical blocks (upper and lower halves) and cannot be placed inside flower pots. Harvested pitcher plants craft into cyan dye.
Breeding Sniffers and Raising Snifflets

Breeding uses the same torchflower seed you're already collecting: "A player can breed sniffers by using torchflower seeds on two sniffers." On success, "two adult sniffers breed, they drop a sniffer egg as an item on the ground, and then enter a 5-minute cooldown before they can breed again" — shorter than the 8-minute dig cooldown above. In Bedrock Edition only, sniffers must be at full health to breed.
The dropped egg goes through the same place-and-hatch process to produce a snifflet, which then needs a fixed amount of time to grow: "Snifflets require 48000 game ticks to grow up into adult sniffers, which is equal to 40 minutes or two in-game days," per the wiki. Feeding speeds this up: "The remaining growth time is reduced by 10% each time a snifflet is fed torchflower seeds." Snifflets cannot dig — that starts only once grown.
One more Bedrock-only number: "sniffers are healed by 2 health points each time they are fed a torchflower seed." With 14 total health points, that's 14 ÷ 2 = 7 feedings to heal from zero, in theory. This feeding-heal is documented for Bedrock Edition specifically; whether Java Edition works the same way is not documented in our source.
Quick reference
- Adult health: 14 HP (7 hearts).
- Brushing suspicious sand: 4.8 seconds (96 ticks: 6+20+30+40), then it converts to sand.
- Egg hatch time: 10 minutes on moss, 20 minutes on any other block.
- Dig cooldown: 8 minutes; no digging while leashed, in water, panicking, or in a boat/minecart.
- Dig outcome: 50/50 between torchflower seeds and a pitcher pod.
- Breeding item: torchflower seeds; breeding cooldown: 5 minutes; Bedrock requires full health.
- Snifflet growth: 48,000 ticks = 40 minutes = 2 in-game days, cut 10% per feeding.
- Bedrock healing: +2 HP per seed fed (Java equivalent not documented in our source).
Running your own Minecraft server
Raising a sniffer to breeding age takes real, uninterrupted time — two in-game days per snifflet, plus repeated 8-minute dig cooldowns to stockpile torchflower seeds first. A managed server keeps that clock running with 24/7 uptime, so a snifflet set growing before you log off is still growing when you return, instead of the world sitting paused on your own machine. One-click backups mean you can test hatch surfaces freely without risking a world you'd rather not lose.
Conclusion
Every part of raising a sniffer comes down to a number the wiki states outright: a 4.8-second brush, a 10- or 20-minute hatch depending on the block, an 8-minute dig cooldown with a clean 50/50 split between torchflower seeds and pitcher pods, a 5-minute breeding cooldown, and a 40-minute (two in-game day) snifflet growth period that feeding shrinks by 10% at a time. The one open question our source leaves — whether Java Edition mirrors Bedrock's torchflower-seed healing — is worth watching rather than assuming either way.
