The Ranged Skill in Dragonwilds: Every Unlock From Trick Shot to Fire Arrows

Trick Shot unlocks at Ranged 8 — but it does not work with crossbows until level 30. That gap of twenty-two levels is why crossbow players spend the early game wondering what everyone else is doing. Dragonwilds' Ranged tree is the longest of the three combat trees, with twelve named unlocks running all the way to 45, and unlike Attack or Magic it keeps giving you things well past the forties. Here is the whole ladder.
On sourcing. Jagex do not publish the Ranged tree. The unlocks below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.
The Full Ladder
| Level | Unlock | Type |
|---|---|---|
| All | Ammo Recovery Chance — increases per level | Passive |
| 3 | Quick Action | Passive |
| 5 | Archery Target | Recipe |
| 8 | Trick Shot | Passive |
| 12 | Snare | Spell |
| 15 | Toxic Behaviour — weapon poison | Recipe |
| 18 | Hunter's Sense | Passive |
| 22 | Make 'Em Bleed — weapon barbs | Recipe |
| 25 | Spectral Arrows | Spell |
| 30 | Crossbow Trick Shot | Passive |
| 35 | Enchanted Crossbow Bolts | Recipe |
| 40 | Venomous Trapper | Passive/spell |
| 45 | Fire Starter — fire oil and fire arrows | Recipe |
| 99 | Ranged Skillcape | Recipe |
The per-level passive is the odd one out among the combat skills. Attack and Magic both reduce stamina cost per level. Ranged instead increases the chance to recover ammo — so levelling Ranged makes shooting cheaper in materials rather than cheaper in stamina.
That pairs with a specific piece of gear. Ava's Accumulator gives +10% ammo recovery and automatically picks up ranged ammo from a distance — stacking the skill's own economy with the back slot's.
And note what Ranged does not get: a stamina discount per level. A drawn longbow shot costs 30 stamina — more than a dodge — and that never improves from levelling. It improves from the ranged armour 2/3 set bonus, which is −33% ranged attack stamina cost, and from a Relentless Infusion, also −33%. Those two do not stack, since stamina reductions never stack against the same action.
The Three That Change How You Shoot

Trick Shot at 8 is the skill-expression unlock: "After firing a fully drawn arrow, release follow-up shots at the right time for increased damage." It rewards rhythm rather than positioning.
Crossbow Trick Shot at 30 is the same mechanic, repurposed. For crossbows, hitting the timing "instantly finishes reloading and readies your next shot" — so on a crossbow, Trick Shot is a fire-rate bonus rather than a damage one. That fits the weapon: crossbows reload automatically, and the reload is delayed if you try to fire during it, so a mechanic that skips the reload is worth more than extra damage.
Snare at 12 is Ranged's crowd control. It "conjures earth magic at your feet" and roots anything caught inside.
Venomous Trapper at 40 turns it into a damage tool. The trap now "triggers a cloud of poison when activated, causing enemies stuck inside it to become poisoned over time" — and the poison continues after the trap subsides. So a snare stops caring whether the enemy is still inside it. Place, trigger, walk away.
Spectral Arrows at 25 is the highest-value spell in the tree. It enchants your bow with astral magic, and arrows penetrate multiple targets — with no documented limit on how many. Against a line of enemies it is the single best thing Ranged does.
Two notes on it. "Astral Magic" is not a fourth magic type — it is an enchantment applied to a ranged weapon; Dragonwilds' magic elements remain fire, air and water. And it is one of the spells you can walk while casting, alongside Tempest Shield, Surge and the Enchant Weapon spells.
The Ammunition Tree

Three levels unlock ammunition crafting, and they are not equally useful:
| Level | Unlock | What it makes |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | Toxic Behaviour | Weapon poison — imbue melee weapons with Poison, or craft poisoned arrows |
| 22 | Make 'Em Bleed | Weapon barbs — imbue melee weapons with Bleed, or craft barbed arrows |
| 35 | Enchanted Crossbow Bolts | Bolts with a chance of unique magical effects |
| 45 | Fire Starter | Fire oil and fire arrows |
Here is the awkward truth about three of those four. Every documented boss in Dragonwilds is immune to Burning, and all but one are immune to Poison and Bleed as well:
| Boss | Immune to |
|---|---|
| Velgar | Poison, Burning |
| Imaru | Poison, Burning, Bleed |
| Black Knight Titan | Burning |
| Fuzan | Poison, Bleed, Burning |
So weapon poison, weapon barbs and fire arrows are for trash, not for bosses. They remain excellent against ordinary enemies — and weapon poison and barbs also imbue melee weapons, which makes them useful to a whole group rather than only to archers.
Enchanted Crossbow Bolts at 35 are the exception, and the boss ammunition of choice. They carry elemental and utility effects rather than status ones:
| Bolt | Effect |
|---|---|
| Enchanted Iron Bolts | 15% chance of water magic damage — the weakness of both power level 6 bosses |
| Enchanted Blurite Bolts | 15% chance of earth magic damage |
| Enchanted Steel Bolts | 15% chance to heal 20% of your health |
| Enchanted Mithril Bolts | 15% chance of a toxic burst |
The Enchanted Steel Bolt is the sleeper. A 15% chance to heal a fifth of your health on hit is sustain no other weapon class gets, and it is specifically recommended for Imaru.
Building a Ranged Character

Which weapon type you commit to changes which levels matter.
| If you shoot | Prioritise | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Shortbows | 8, then 25 | Trick Shot works immediately; Spectral Arrows multiplies a fast fire rate |
| Longbows | 8, then 25 | Same, but each shot costs 30 stamina — the set bonus matters more |
| Crossbows | 30, then 35 | Trick Shot does nothing until 30; enchanted bolts at 35 are the payoff |
Crossbow players have a real early-game gap, and one compensation. The crossbow is the only one-handed ranged weapon, so it is the only one that can hold a shield — which means block, parry and stagger are available to a crossbow user and to nobody else shooting.
The armour set bonuses are worth planning around too:
- 1/3: +40 stealth speed — pairs with Hunter's Sense at 18 and the Ring of Pursuit.
- 2/3: −33% ranged attack stamina cost.
- 3/3: +25% weak point damage — which pairs with the Amulet of Accuracy and the Shadow Crossbow's increased weak point damage.
And past 45 the tree stops giving. Fire Starter is the last named unlock, and everything above it is accumulated ammo recovery plus the skillcape at 99 — which grants a small chance that a ranged attack costs no stamina. Given that 99 costs 1,000,000 experience and the last six levels alone cost 657,432, level to 45 and spend the rest elsewhere unless you want the cape.
Practical tips
- Trick Shot unlocks at 8 but does not apply to crossbows until 30.
- On a crossbow, Trick Shot skips the reload rather than adding damage.
- Ranged's per-level passive is ammo recovery, not a stamina discount.
- Spectral Arrows at 25 pierces unlimited targets — the tree's best spell.
- Venomous Trapper at 40 keeps poisoning enemies after the trap subsides.
- Weapon poison, barbs and fire arrows are useless on every documented boss.
- Enchanted Crossbow Bolts at 35 are the boss ammunition — Iron for water, Steel to heal.
- A drawn longbow shot costs 30 stamina; the 2/3 set bonus cuts ranged attack cost 33%.
- The last named unlock is 45. Past that it is ammo recovery and a cape.
Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server
Ammunition is a supply chain — fletching bench, oils, enchanted bolts — and supply chains only pay off on a world where the stock survives until the next session. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.
Conclusion
Dragonwilds' Ranged tree runs further than either other combat skill, with twelve named unlocks up to level 45. Trick Shot arrives at 8 but does not apply to crossbows until 30, where it becomes a reload skip rather than a damage bonus — the single biggest reason crossbow players feel behind early. Snare at 12 roots enemies and becomes a damage tool at 40 with Venomous Trapper, whose poison persists after the trap ends, while Spectral Arrows at 25 enchants a bow with astral magic to pierce an unlimited number of targets and is the tree's standout. The ammunition unlocks need a caveat: weapon poison at 15, weapon barbs at 22 and fire arrows at 45 are wasted on every documented boss, since all four are immune to Burning and most to Poison and Bleed — the boss ammunition is Enchanted Crossbow Bolts at 35, particularly Iron for the water weakness both power level 6 bosses share and Steel for its 15% chance to heal a fifth of your health. Finally, note that Ranged's per-level passive is ammo recovery rather than a stamina discount, so the −33% from the 2/3 armour set bonus does work the skill itself never will.
