The Ranged Skill & Crossbows in Dragonwilds (Keep Your Off-Hand)

Card explaining that crossbows are one-handed and free up the off-hand slot.

The Ranged skill tree arrived in RuneScape: Dragonwilds 0.9, and the headline was not a bow — it was the crossbow, a one-handed long-range weapon that lets you keep a shield or torch in your off-hand. Shortbows and longbows make you choose between reach and defence; the crossbow does not. Here is how Ranged works, how crossbows are made, and why the crafting chain is deliberately longer than you might expect.

Why Crossbows Exist

Jagex's framing was a direct response to feedback: bows "allow adventurers to deal damage from afar, and stay agile and evasive", but players wanted "to be able to off-hand a secondary tool, whether that's a torch or a shield."

The result is a genuine build choice rather than a straight upgrade. The crossbow "offers a versatile, powerful alternative to the bows that lets you combine the weapon with a shield or torch so you don't have to compromise on attack OR defense."

A torch in the off-hand is not a small thing in a game with dark regions and dungeons — it means a ranged player no longer picks between seeing and shooting.

And the combat rework made the build smoother: swapping to a two-handed weapon and back now automatically re-equips your off-hand item, so switching between a longbow and a crossbow-plus-shield no longer costs you an inventory shuffle.

The Crafting Chain

Crossbows are made through a chain rather than a single recipe, and that is on purpose. Jagex describe the intent plainly: "We've heard your feedback around the process of crafting equipment feeling more like RuneScape. So, expect the traditional RuneScape crafting methods."

    The chain:

Mine rocks → smelt ores into metals → forge metals into limbs → craft limbs into crossbows → load and fire

And it now spans two benches, after the crafting stations were split:

StepWhere
Crossbow limbsBlacksmith Bench
The crossbow itselfFletching Bench

Frames use a range of wood types; limbs are made from bone or metals. That gives you material choices at two separate points in the chain rather than one.

The Fletching Bench is the Ranged hub. It holds "every recipe – both old and new – for every Bow, Arrow and Bolt in one convenient place", and it is unlocked by gathering Wood and Flax.

On a shared server, the two-bench chain is worth planning around — the person making a crossbow will bounce between stations repeatedly, so build them near each other.

Ammunition and Inventory

Card explaining ammunition handling and mid-combat switching for Ranged builds.

Ammunition was the main friction point for Ranged players, and it was addressed from two directions.

A dedicated ammunition tab shipped in 0.9.1. Jagex's framing was that mages had been getting away with it — "those blasted Mages having all the fun having a separate pocket to store all their runes in" — so arrows and bolts got their own inventory tab too. That takes ammunition out of competition with everything else you carry.

A visible quiver is not in yet. Jagex noted the request and said "we'll try and introduce something in the future, but for now, enjoy shoving all your arrows in that tab. Don't ask where they go. It's magic."

And the combat rework made switching viable mid-fight. One of the stated problems was that "switching ammo types in combat is punishing"; the fix lets you cycle through your runes and arrows in mid combat without opening the inventory.

Those two together change how a Ranged build plays. Carrying several ammunition types was previously a cost paid in slots and in fumbling; it is now closer to a loadout you can actually use.

And there is a quest item that addresses the running cost directly. Animal Magnetism — a classic RuneScape quest name, added alongside Fishing — has Manktongue the Goblin find "an advert in a bottle with a recipe for something he calls the 'Arrow Grabba'." Build it, place it on your back, and it accumulates arrows you have fired within a radius around you.

If you are playing Ranged, do this quest early. Recovering spent ammunition is the single biggest saving available to the build — every arrow you pick back up is one you did not have to mine, smelt, forge and fletch.

And the ammunition economy was made much cheaper in 0.10.1:

ChangeEffect
Crossbow Bolts per craft33, up from 15
Arrow materialsNo longer need region-specific wood"Ash wood, feathers and a metal of choice will suffice"
Ammo recovery from Ranged perksMore than doubled"at higher levels, you'll recover a meaningful amount of arrows and bolts"

The region-specific wood change is the quiet one. Before it, arrows tied you to gathering in particular biomes; now a single common wood covers it.

The Ranged Damage Correction

If you played Ranged around the Fellhollow update and it felt broken, it was. Lead Designer Mod Pointy explained the whole arc, and it is worth knowing because it explains why older guides disagree about how strong the playstyle is.

    What happened:

  1. Ranged damage was over-scaling. "Between ammo base values, Power Level scaling, and multiple damage multipliers all stacking together, ranged damage was increasing far more aggressively than we intended." By late Ghornfell, "players were crushing bosses like Velgar in record time using Ranged Weapons."
  2. Fellhollow cut it across the board — not as a deliberate nerf, but because Jagex rebuilt how ranged damage is calculated.
  3. They overcorrected. "We pushed things too far in the opposite direction. The end result was ranged being far weaker than it should have been."
  4. 0.10.1 brought it back, with published figures:

WeaponDamage change
Longbow full-draw+41%
Shortbow full-draw+40%
Crossbows+29%
Shortbow quickshots+25%

Draw times came down too: Longbows from 2.25s to 2.05s (a 9% cut), and the Crystal Bow from 2.0s to 1.65s — an 18% cut, alongside a basic-attack adjustment bringing it in line with other PL3 bows and a fix so its trick-shots deal their intended damage.

One quality-of-life fix in the same patch: moving your character no longer cancels Hunter's Sense.

Two more combat-rework items that matter specifically to Ranged:

  • Early-exit cancels for bow attacks, so a drawn shot is no longer a commitment.
  • A radial hotwheel for both controller and keyboard, speeding up primary-item selection.

Building a Ranged Character

Card giving practical advice for playing a Ranged build in Dragonwilds.

Ranged came with more than weapons — 0.9 shipped the skill tree with "new weapons, new skill spells, and rewards for grinding through those levels", alongside Custom World Sliders and Creative Mode.

Three skills that reinforce a Ranged build:

  • Agility. It levels passively while you run, cuts sprint stamina cost, and raises maximum carry weight at levels 50 and 75 — which directly addresses carrying "lots of arrows". Jagex's own description of the Ranged fantasy ends "mythical in speed, accuracy and carrying lots of arrows"; Agility is how you get the last part.
  • Mining and Smithing, because the crossbow chain starts at a rock. A Ranged player who cannot smelt depends on someone who can.
  • Farming or Fishing for food, now that healing potions have been removed and food restores HP instantly.

Armour is not a separate consideration any more. All three styles — Melee, Magic and Ranged — are crafted at the same Armour Bench, so there is no extra station to build for a ranged character.

On a six-player server, the crossbow-and-shield build is a useful niche. It contributes ranged damage without giving up the ability to block — and with the combat rework's shorter block animation and earlier block window, blocking is now worth doing.

Practical tips

  • Crossbows are one-handed — the only ranged weapon that keeps your off-hand free for a shield or torch.
  • Limbs at the Blacksmith Bench, the crossbow at the Fletching Bench. Build them close together.
  • The Fletching Bench needs Wood and Flax to unlock, and holds every bow, arrow and bolt recipe.
  • Arrows and bolts have their own inventory tab since 0.9.1 — they no longer compete for space.
  • Cycle arrows and bolts mid-combat — no inventory opening.
  • Bow attacks have early-exit cancels now, so a drawn shot is not a commitment.
  • Level Agility for carry weight at 50 and 75 — that is your ammunition capacity.
  • Do the Animal Magnetism quest for the Arrow Grabba, which recovers arrows you have fired.
  • Bolts craft 33 at a time now, up from 15, and arrows no longer need region-specific wood.
  • Ranged damage was over-nerfed and then restored — Longbows +41%, Crossbows +29%. Ignore pre-0.10.1 balance advice.
  • All armour styles share the Armour Bench. No extra station for a Ranged build.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

A Ranged build depends on a supply chain — ore, metals, wood, flax, arrows — and supply chains reward a base that keeps working while you are not there. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps your world and its workshops available around the clock for a group of up to six players, applies updates automatically so client and server versions never drift apart after a hotfix, and takes one-click backups before major changes like 1.0 on 15 September.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds' Ranged skill introduced the crossbow, a one-handed weapon whose entire purpose is letting you keep a shield or torch in the off-hand — a real alternative to shortbows and longbows rather than a replacement for them. It is built through a deliberately RuneScape-style chain — mine, smelt, forge limbs, craft the crossbow — that now spans two stations, with limbs at the Blacksmith Bench and the weapon at the Fletching Bench, the latter unlocked with Wood and Flax and holding every bow, arrow and bolt recipe. The combat rework fixed the build's worst friction by letting you cycle ammunition mid-fight and adding early-exit cancels to bow attacks, and a separate ammunition tab shipped in 0.9.1 so arrows stopped competing for inventory space. Pair it with Agility — whose carry-weight increases at levels 50 and 75 are, in practice, your arrow capacity — and do Animal Magnetism early for the Arrow Grabba, which picks spent arrows back up for you.
