The Kalphite Hive in Dragonwilds: 5,500 Health, and a Queen That Turns Off Your Weapon

The Umbral Sands in Dragonwilds.

The Kalphites arrived in the Umbral Sands with Eye on Ashenfall 0.12.0 on 23 June 2026, and they are the first enemy family in Dragonwilds that punishes a single-style build outright. All four castes sit at power level 7, all four resist six of the game's damage types, and the Kalphite Queen can shut off an entire combat style mid-fight — signalled by the colour she is glowing.

The Four Castes

Card listing the four Kalphite castes with their health values.

CastePower levelHealth
Kalphite Worker7495
Kalphite Soldier7825
Kalphite Guardian72,475
Kalphite Queen75,500

The spread is the useful part. A Worker and a Queen carry the same power level but the Queen has eleven times the health. Power level in Dragonwilds tells you what tier of gear you need; it does not tell you how long the fight lasts. Do not read a Worker's difficulty off the Queen's, or the reverse.

The Guardian at 2,475 is the one that catches people. It is half a Queen, sitting in ordinary hive fights, and it does not announce itself as a mini-boss.

The Shared Resistance List

Worker, Soldier and Guardian all publish the same line, and it is unusually long:

Resistant to: Crush, Slash, Stab, Range, Air, Water.

Six entries. That covers all three melee damage types, ranged, and two of the four magic elements. Read what is not on that list and the answer falls out: Earth and Fire are the two elements they do not resist.

That makes the Umbral Sands a magic-caster's biome by construction. A pure melee build is fighting into resistance on every swing regardless of which weapon class it brought, and an archer is in the same position. If you are going into the hive with a physical build, expect the fight to take substantially longer than the health bars suggest — the numbers above are before resistance is applied.

The Queen's Shades

Card explaining the Kalphite Queen's red, blue and green shade mechanic.

The Queen does not carry the caste resistance line. Her entry says something more direct: she can be immune to any attack style. The mechanic is a colour cycle, and it is fully readable:

ShadeBlocksUse instead
RedAll incoming Attack (melee) damageMagic or Ranged
BlueAll incoming Magic damageAttack or Ranged
GreenAll incoming Ranged damageAttack or Magic

This is a hard block, not a resistance. While a shade is up, the named style deals nothing at all — so a player who brought only one style will spend a third of the fight unable to contribute.

The practical consequence is a loadout rule rather than a rotation: carry two styles into the Queen fight, and make sure they are not both blocked by the same shade. Any two of the three works, because each shade blocks exactly one. Melee plus magic, melee plus ranged, magic plus ranged — all fine. What does not work is a single-style build of any kind.

The same three shades appear on the Guardian, which is a useful place to learn the tell before the Queen fight, since a Guardian at 2,475 health gives you time to practise reading the colour without a 5,500-health bar in front of you.

What the Hive Drops

Card showing Kalphite drops by caste, from Stunted Wings to Greater Wings.

Every caste drops a wing, and the wing quality is the caste ladder in item form:

CasteGuaranteed drops
WorkerStunted Kalphite Wing ×1, Kalphite Shell Fragments 1–2
SoldierKalphite Wing ×1, Kalphite Shell Fragments 2–4
GuardianGreater Kalphite Wing ×1, Kalphite Shell Fragments 1–2
QueenGreater Kalphite Wing 2–4, Kalphite Shell 5–8, Kalphite Ichor 6–12, Poison Ichor 3–6

    Three details worth pulling out:

  • The Queen is the only source of Poison Ichor in this list, at 3–6 guaranteed, alongside far larger quantities of everything else.
  • Guardians drop Greater Wings too, at one apiece. If you need Greater Wings and not the rest, Guardians are a much cheaper fight than the Queen — a quarter of a Queen's health for one of the same item.
  • Soldiers give the most Shell Fragments at 2–4, more than Workers or Guardians. If fragments are the bottleneck, farm the middle caste rather than the top one.

Below the guaranteed line, the castes roll Kalphite Ichor at 50/100 and Kalphite Shell at 25/100, and the Worker carries a 1/400 Crucible Engram — the same Nightmare Crucible unlock currency that drops elsewhere, at long odds.

Conclusion

The Kalphites landed in the Umbral Sands on 23 June 2026 with Eye on Ashenfall 0.12.0, and all four castes sit at power level 7 despite running from 495 health on a Worker to 5,500 on the Queen — an eleven-fold spread at identical gear requirements, with the Guardian at 2,475 acting as an unannounced mini-boss. Worker, Soldier and Guardian share one long resistance line — Crush, Slash, Stab, Range, Air and Water — which resists all three melee types, ranged, and half the magic elements, leaving Earth and Fire as the two things they do not shrug off. The Queen instead uses coloured shades that hard-block a whole style: red blocks melee, blue blocks magic, green blocks ranged, and while a shade is up that style deals nothing at all. Since each shade blocks exactly one style, any two-style loadout clears the fight and any single-style loadout stalls for a third of it. Drops track the caste ladder through Stunted, ordinary and Greater Kalphite Wings, with Guardians dropping Greater Wings at a quarter of the Queen's health, Soldiers giving the most Shell Fragments at 2–4, and the Queen alone supplying Poison Ichor at 3–6.
