The Hare in Valheim: The Mistlands' Only Harmless Creature

A Hare in the Valheim Mistlands.

The Mistlands roster is uniformly hostile — Seekers resisting all three physical damage types, Gjall at 1,500 health dropping Ticks every 50 seconds, Dvergr at 350 with no weakness at all. The Hare is the exception. It does not fight, it drops the material that furnishes your Mistlands outpost, and it is the only thing in the biome you can gather without preparing for a fight.

What It Drops

Scale hide is described as "a pelt of glittering scales", and it splits its uses across two categories that no other Mistlands material covers:

    Building:

  • Black marble throne
  • Hare rug

    Crafting: Mistlands gear.

The building half is what makes it distinctive. Carapace arms you, Mandible and Bilebag make weapons, Royal jelly feeds you — and Scale hide furnishes the place you built out of Black marble. It is the decorative material of the biome.

And it teleports, like every other Mistlands material, so hauling it home is not a problem.

Hare Meat Cooks Slowly

Hare meat is the outlier in Valheim's cooking times. Where most raw meats cook on a 25-second cycle at a Cooking Station, Hare meat takes 60 seconds — more than double.

That has a practical consequence at a station you are watching. A cooking station holds several slots, and a batch of Hare meat occupies them for well over twice as long as anything else you might have put there. If you are cooking on a timer between fights, Hare meat is the wrong thing to load.

It is also the reason to bring more than one station. Valheim allows seven cooking stations in a row over a single campfire, rising to ten when placed differently — and Hare meat is the food that makes that capacity worth building.

Where to Find Them

Hares live in the Mistlands, which is the practical difficulty: everything about reaching them is the hard part, and the hunt itself is not.

That means the Hare is a target of opportunity rather than a trip. You will be in the Mistlands for Carapace, Black marble, Soft tissue, Sap or a Dvergr component crate; the Hare is what you shoot on the way past.

Two things make hunting them awkward despite their harmlessness:

  • The mist. Without a Wisplight clearing 10 metres, a small creature that does not attack you is very easy to miss entirely.
  • They run. A passive creature that flees is a ranged target, so bring a bow — and remember the Mistlands is the biome where Pierce is resisted by Seeker bodies but not by anything harmless.

Fitting It Into a Mistlands Trip

Card advising when to hunt Valheim Hares.

  • Take them opportunistically. You are already in the biome for something else.
  • Bring a bow. They flee, and closing distance on a passive creature in mist is wasted time.
  • Wear the Wisplight. You cannot shoot what you cannot see, and 10 metres is the difference.
  • Do not cook Hare meat mid-trip. At 60 seconds it is the slowest raw meat in the game.
  • Bank Scale hide for building, not for gear. Its distinctive uses are the Black marble throne and the Hare rug.

The Biome It Lives In

Card contrasting the Hare with the rest of the Mistlands roster.

For context on how unusual a harmless Mistlands creature is, the rest of the roster:

CreatureHealthThe problem
Seeker200 / 400 / 600Resists Blunt, Pierce and Slash
Seeker Soldier1,500 / 3,000 / 4,500Same, plus 100 Chop and 100 Pickaxe per ram
Seeker Brood2060 Pierce, and they arrive in threes
Gjall1,500 / 3,000 / 4,500Immune to stagger, drops 3 Ticks every 50 s
Tick5050 Pierce every half second
Dvergr rogue / mage350 / 700 / 1,050No weakness at all
HareNone

Six hostile entries and one that is not. That is the Mistlands, and it is why the Hare is worth knowing about — not because it is dangerous, but because it is the only thing in the biome that is not.

Mistlands trips are long, dangerous and best split between people, which needs one persistent world everybody returns to. A gamever Valheim server keeps it running for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.

Conclusion

The Hare is the only harmless creature in the Mistlands, a biome whose other six entries include Seekers resisting all three physical damage types, a Seeker Soldier at 4,500 health, a stagger-immune Gjall dropping three Ticks every 50 seconds, Ticks dealing 50 Pierce every half second, and Dvergr at up to 1,050 health with no weakness at all. It drops Scale hide, a 0.5-weight, 50-stack, teleportable material described as "a pelt of glittering scales", which is the biome's decorative material rather than its armour one — building the Black marble throne and the Hare rug where Carapace and Mandible build gear. It also drops Hare meat, the slowest raw meat in the game to cook at 60 seconds against most meats' 25, which makes it the wrong thing to load into a station you are watching between fights and a good reason to build out the seven-to-ten cooking station stack a single campfire supports. Hunt them with a bow, wearing a Wisplight, on your way to something else.
