The Dragonwilds Water System: Four Buildings, Four Farming Levels

Watering a Dragonwilds farm by hand means walking to a lake. The alternative is four buildings that unlock at Farming 6, 24, 32 and 46, and they do genuinely different jobs: one makes clean water out of rain, two store it, and one replenishes itself.
The one to build first is the cheapest and earliest: the Rain Catcher, which converts rainwater at 10 units per second while it rains.
The Four Buildings

| Building | Farming level | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Rain Catcher | 6 | Converts rainwater to clean water — holds 300 units, collects 10 per second while raining |
| Water Barrel | 24 | Stores clean or dirty water, never both |
| Well | 32 | Stores clean water and replenishes to full capacity on its own |
| Large Water Barrel | 46 | The larger barrel, same clean-or-dirty rule |
Only the Rain Catcher creates water. The barrels and the well are storage; the catcher is production, and it is the earliest of the four at Farming 6.
Ten units per second is fast. A full 300-unit catcher is thirty seconds of rain, which means weather does the work as long as the building exists.
The catcher has one interface quirk: you cannot open it unless at least one unit of rain is stored inside. An empty catcher looks broken and is not.
The well is the only self-replenishing source, which makes it the one building that keeps a farm running through a dry spell.
Clean and Dirty Water Do Not Mix
Both barrels hold either clean or dirty water and never both. That restriction runs right through the water system — the watering cans have the same rule, and a can filled with one type cannot take the other until it is emptied.
Barrels only accept water from watering cans, not from the drinkable clean water and dirty water items. That is the same asymmetry the cans have in reverse: you cannot pour an item into a can, and you cannot pour an item into a barrel.
So the flow is: source → can → barrel, and the source is a body of water, a rain catcher, a well, or another barrel.
The well transfers directly. You can move clean water from a well into a water barrel or an empty watering can, which makes it the hub of a tidy setup rather than a dead end.
Placement Rules

The well must be built outdoors and on land. Both halves matter — it cannot go inside a building, and it cannot be placed over water.
That puts it in the same category as the open-air processing stations — the grindstone, sawmill, furnace and blast furnace all refuse a roof — while the spinning wheel and loom demand one. A Dragonwilds base is a courtyard and a covered workshop, and the well belongs in the courtyard.
The rain catcher needs weather, not sky specifically, but the sensible place for it is the same courtyard.
Barrels are the flexible ones, which makes them the right thing to put next to the farming plots themselves.
Building the Setup

- Farming 6 — build the Rain Catcher immediately. It is the only producer, and 10 units per second means the weather fills it for you.
- Farming 24 — add a Water Barrel next to the plots. Storage where you need it beats storage where the water comes from.
- Farming 32 — build the Well. Self-replenishing, and it feeds both barrels and cans directly.
- Farming 46 — the Large Water Barrel, if a single barrel is running out between sessions.
- Keep clean and dirty water on separate barrels. They cannot mix, so a mislabelled barrel is a barrel you have to empty.
- Remember a plot takes 50 units to fully hydrate, so a 300-unit catcher is six full plots before it needs to rain again.
One catcher and one barrel covers a small farm indefinitely. The upgrades matter when the plot count grows, not before.
Running your own Dragonwilds server
Rain fills a catcher whether or not anyone is logged in, which is only true on a world that keeps running. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall persistent with automatic updates and one-click backups.
Conclusion
Dragonwilds' water system is four buildings across four Farming levels. The Rain Catcher at level 6 is the only one that creates water — converting rainwater to clean water, holding 300 units and collecting 10 per second while raining, though its interface will not open until at least one unit is inside. The Water Barrel at 24 and the Large Water Barrel at 46 store clean or dirty water but never both, and accept water only from watering cans, not from the drinkable items. The Well at 32 is the one source that replenishes to full capacity on its own and can transfer directly into a barrel or an empty can — but it must be built outdoors and on land, putting it in the courtyard alongside the grindstone and sawmill rather than in a covered workshop. Since a plot takes 50 units to hydrate fully, a single full catcher is six plots, which is why one catcher and one barrel carries a small farm indefinitely.
