The Best Healing Food in Dragonwilds Is Not the One That Heals Most

Card explaining why health-per-sustenance decides Dragonwilds combat food.

Stuffed Catfish restores 200 health. Beltfish Broth restores 130. In a long fight the Beltfish Broth heals you for more than twice as much. The reason is a mechanic almost nobody accounts for: Over Eating. Your sustenance meter caps at 100, and once you push 200 past that cap you cannot eat anything for 15 seconds. So the number that decides a combat food is not health — it is health per point of sustenance. Here is the whole table, ranked properly.

On sourcing. Jagex do not publish food statistics. The numbers below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.

Why the Ratio Matters

Three rules combine to make raw healing misleading:

  1. Sustenance caps at 100, and eating past it builds Over Eating.
  2. At 200 sustenance over the cap, the debuff triggers and you cannot eat for 15 seconds.
  3. There is a 2-second delay between eating, regardless.

So a fight gives you a fixed sustenance budget of roughly 300 points before you are locked out. What matters is how much health you can buy with it.

FoodHealthSustenanceHealth per sustenanceHealth from a ~300 budget
Beltfish Broth130255.2~1,560
Sun Baked Sole130304.33~1,300
Eggs Royale120304.0~1,200
Braised Catfish120304.0~1,200

Swabbie Pie220802.75~825
Undead Delight180702.57~770
Stuffed Catfish200802.5~750

Beltfish Broth is the best combat food in the game by this measure, and it is not close — 5.2 health per sustenance against the popular Stuffed Catfish's 2.5.

The wiki says this outright: "when looking for ideal healing foods, food with higher health to sustenance ratios should be" preferred. It is simply never surfaced in game.

The counter-argument is real but narrow. A Swabbie Pie at 220 is the biggest single heal available, and in a fight where you get one window to eat, size beats efficiency. Big heals for panic, efficient heals for attrition.

The Weight Problem

Card comparing Dragonwilds food by health per unit of weight.

Carry weight is the other constraint, because Encumbered cuts your speed by 40% and stops you running.

FoodHealthWeightHealth per weight
Dried Redberries200.1200
Dried Dwellberries200.1200
Dried Peach200.1200
Herb Baked Trout1000.7143
Eggs Royale1200.7171
Undead Delight1800.7257
Stuffed Catfish2000.7286
Swabbie Pie2201.5147

Dried fruit is the travel food. "Food with high sustenance to weight ratios will allow you to carry more while adventuring" — and dried redberries, dwellberries and peaches all weigh 0.1 for 20 health and 15–25 sustenance. For long overland journeys they are unbeatable.

But note that the best combat foods are also light. Undead Delight, Stuffed Catfish and Eggs Royale all weigh 0.7, so weight is rarely the binding constraint on a boss loadout — sustenance is.

And there is a third axis nobody thinks about: the perk. Undead Delight is the most-recommended boss food on the wiki not because of its 180 health but because it carries Sea Life for 1,200 seconds3 health per second for twenty minutes, which is 3,600 health if the fight runs that long.

Regeneration Beats Healing

Card explaining Dragonwilds' regeneration perks and how to stack two.

Since the health rework removed healing potions, food is the only recovery — and the passive regeneration perks matter more than any single meal.

PerkRateBest source
Sea Life3 health per secondUndead Delight1,200s; Eggs Royale900s
Soul Food8 health every 5 secondsRoast Pumpkin 150s, Pumpkin Soup 300s, Glazed Pumpkin Sandwich 600s

Sea Life at 3 per second is 180 health per minute. Soul Food at 8 per 5 seconds is 96 per minute. Sea Life is nearly twice as strong.

And here is the stacking trick that boss guides use. Soul Food will not stack with itself from two foods — but the Pumpkin Spice Infusion grants Soul Food from the infusion slot. Take Sea Life from a food and Soul Food from the infusion, and you have both running at once, because they occupy different slots.

That is 276 health per minute of passive regeneration, before you eat anything at all.

One more perk worth designing around: Knowledgable Nourishment gives +10% experience gain in all skills, and appears on Sweet Veg Ball (300s), Wild Pie, Forager's Sandwich, Meat Twist Sandwich and Glazed Pumpkin Sandwich (all 600s). On a skilling session rather than a fight, that is the food slot's best use.

What to Cook, and When

The cooking chain behind all this is worth stating. Ingredients are processed at a campfire or grill, then combined into meals at a stone range or cooking range — and the Grill has no fuel cost, which on a base running continuously is the entire argument for building one.

And on a shared server, food is the clearest case for specialisation. One player at Cooking 20 unlocks Internal Alchemy, which refreshes food and drink buffs to a full timer — so a group with a dedicated cook can maintain 600-second perks indefinitely, while a group of six casual cooks lets everything lapse.

Two final cautions. Dubious Meat Pie grants Steadfast Stomach — resistance to Wither, useful in Fellhollow — but also Ravenous, which makes hydration and sustenance drain 20% faster. And too much dirty water triggers Soulscourge: 50 damage over 5 seconds.

Practical tips

  • Over Eating locks you out of food for 15 seconds past 200 sustenance over the cap.
  • So rank combat food by health per sustenance, not raw health.
  • Beltfish Broth is the best at 5.2130 health for 25 sustenance.
  • Stuffed Catfish heals more per bite but far less per fight at 2.5.
  • Swabbie Pie's 220 health is the biggest single heal, for panic moments.
  • Dried fruit weighs 0.1 — the travel food.
  • Sea Life is 3 HP/second; Soul Food is 8 per 5 seconds.
  • Take Sea Life from food and Soul Food from the Pumpkin Spice Infusion to run both.
  • Internal Alchemy at Cooking 20 keeps 600-second perks running indefinitely.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

A stocked kitchen is the group's healing budget, and it takes a base and a farm that are still there between sessions. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds' best combat food is decided by health per point of sustenance, not by raw healing, because Over Eating locks you out of food for 15 seconds once you exceed the 100 cap by 200 — giving each fight a budget of roughly 300 sustenance. On that basis Beltfish Broth leads at 5.2 health per sustenance (130 for 25), followed by Sun Baked Sole at 4.33 and Eggs Royale and Braised Catfish at 4.0, while the widely recommended Stuffed Catfish manages only 2.5 — so its 200 health per bite converts to roughly 750 health per fight against the Broth's 1,560. Weight matters separately, and dried redberries, dwellberries and peaches at 0.1 each are the travel food. Above both sits regeneration: Sea Life at 3 health per second from Undead Delight's 1,200-second duration, stacked with Soul Food from a Pumpkin Spice Infusion because the two occupy different buff slots — around 276 health per minute before you eat anything. And for anyone not fighting, the food slot's best use is Knowledgable Nourishment and its +10% experience in every skill.
