The Asksvin in Valheim: 800 Health, Fire-Resistant, and You Can Ride It

The Ashlands in Valheim.

The Asksvin is the Ashlands' answer to the question of how you cross a biome that is actively hostile. It is hostile, tameable and fast rideable — a rare combination — with 800 health and resistance to both Fire and Poison. In a biome built around fire damage, that resistance is not a bonus; it is the reason the creature exists there at all.

What an Asksvin Is

BiomeThe Ashlands
Spawn locationThe middle of the Ashlands, during daytime
Star levelMaximum one star
Spawn limit2 at a time

Eight hundred health puts it well above most things you fight. For comparison, a Growth has 100 and a Volture 200. This is a substantial fight before it is a mount.

The wiki describes them as looking like "huge, mutated Necks", which is a useful mental image — the same silhouette, scaled up and made dangerous.

The one-star cap is worth knowing. Most Valheim creatures scale to two stars; the Asksvin stops at one, which puts a ceiling on how dangerous an individual can be. A two-star Asksvin does not exist.

And the spawn limit of two means you will not be swarmed by them, unlike the Voltures sharing the biome.

Fire and Poison Resistance

Card explaining the Asksvin's resistances in Valheim.

The Ashlands is a fire biome, and the Asksvin resists Fire. That is the design in one line — it is native, and your fire-based tools do not work on it.

Which rules out a lot of the kit you probably brought. Fire arrows, the Staff of Embers, anything with a burn component: all halved or worse against a creature specifically resistant to it.

Poison is also resisted, so poison-coated weapons and the Staff of the Wild's poison damage are equally wasted.

What does work is everything else. Frost, Blunt, Slash, Pierce and Lightning are not listed as resisted, which means the ordinary melee and ranged kit lands normally. As our gemstones guide covers, an Iolite-modified weapon adds 10 Lightning with a chain proc — a genuinely good pick here precisely because it is neither Fire nor Poison.

And note that Jade is the wrong gem for this fight. Jade adds +10 Poison and a 20% immobilise — the poison half is resisted, though the immobilise presumably still lands.

So the loadout is: not Fire, not Poison, and prefer Lightning or plain physical.

Taming and Riding

Card explaining Asksvin taming and riding in Valheim.

Asksvin are tameable, joining boar, wolves and Lox on the short list of creatures you can domesticate — and as our taming guide covers, each species has its own time and population rules.

They are also fast rideable creatures, which is the part that matters. The Ashlands is a biome where standing still costs you health, so a fast mount is a survival tool rather than a convenience.

Compare that to the alternative. Crossing the Ashlands on foot means sustained exposure to a hostile environment; crossing it on an Asksvin means covering the same ground in a fraction of the time.

The daytime restriction shapes the hunt. The middle-Ashlands spawn is daytime only, so a taming expedition is a day trip — which, given that night applies Cold at −50% health regeneration, is the sensible time to be out there anyway.

And a tamed Asksvin gives you a fire-resistant animal, which is worth remembering when you are deciding where to keep it. A pen in the Ashlands is survivable for the animal in a way it would not be for a boar.

Bring the Asksvin Cloak once you have one−15% dodge stamina and Wind run at up to +25% running speed, which is the on-foot half of the same mobility problem.

Practical tips

  • 800 health, resistant to Fire and Poison, found in the Ashlands.
  • Spawns in the middle of the biome, daytime only, limit 2.
  • Maximum one star — a two-star Asksvin does not exist.
  • Fire arrows and poison weapons are the wrong tools.
  • Lightning, Frost, Blunt, Slash and Pierce all land normally.
  • Iolite's +10 Lightning is a strong gem choice here; Jade's poison is wasted.
  • They are tameable AND fast rideable — a rare combination.
  • A fire-resistant mount is a survival tool in a biome that damages you constantly.

Running your own Valheim server

Taming is a multi-session commitment, and an Ashlands pen is only worth building on a world that survives between visits. A gamever Valheim server keeps that world persistent for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.

Conclusion

The Asksvin is the Ashlands' native mount: 800 health, resistant to both Fire and Poison, spawning in the middle of the biome during daytime with a limit of two and a maximum of one star. Its resistances tell you what to bring and what to leave — fire arrows, burn weapons and poison are all wasted, while Lightning, Frost and ordinary physical damage land normally, making an Iolite-modified weapon a strong pick and Jade a poor one. Once tamed it is described as a fast rideable creature, which in a biome that damages you for existing turns a mount from a convenience into a survival tool — and being fire-resistant, it can be kept in a pen where an ordinary tamed animal could not. The daytime-only spawn makes a taming trip a day expedition, which is when you want to be in the Ashlands regardless.
