The (5~20)% in Palworld Is Not a Roll — It Is a Partner Skill Level Ladder

A partner skill description in Palworld.

Palworld writes partner skills as ranges — "increases Attack by (5~20)%", "Fire Pals drop (40~80)% more items", "carrying capacity increases by (300~600)" — and almost everyone reads that as a random roll. It is not. Those are the five values of the skill at partner skill levels 1 through 5, and the intermediate steps are published.

The Attack Ladder

Card showing the five partner skill levels behind Palworld's 5~20% attack range.

Thirteen Pals carry the element-swap partner skill that "increases Attack by (5~20)%". Here is what that actually means:

Partner skill levelAttack increase
Lv15%
Lv27%
Lv310%
Lv414%
Lv520%

All thirteen Pals share the identical ladder — Chillet, Chillet Ignis, Univolt, Pyrin, Pyrin Noct, Kitsun Noct, Maraith, Beakon, Ragnahawk, Azurobe, Helzephyr, Helzephyr Lux and Gildane.

The steps are not linear. 5 → 7 → 10 → 14 → 20 climbs by 2, 3, 4 and 6 — an accelerating curve, so the last level is worth more than the first three combined. Going from Lv4 to Lv5 gains you 6 percentage points; going from Lv1 to Lv2 gains you 2.

That changes how you should invest. A partner skill at Lv4 is at 70% of its ceiling; one at Lv1 is at 25%. If you are choosing which Pal to push, pushing one from 4 to 5 is worth three times as much as pushing another from 1 to 2.

The Drop Rate Ladder

The same structure governs the drop-rate boosters, whose text reads "(40~80)% more items":

Partner skill levelDrop increase
Lv140%
Lv250%
Lv360%
Lv470%
Lv580%

This one is perfectly linear+10 percentage points per level, with no acceleration. All thirteen drop-rate Pals share it: Penking, Faleris Aqua, Blazehowl, Vaelet, Menasting, Menasting Terra, Fenglope Lux, Faleris, Cryolinx, Enchanted Sword, Elphidran, Katress and Blazehowl Noct.

Compare the two shapes and the design intent is clear. The attack ladder rewards maxing; the drop ladder rewards owning one at all. A Lv1 drop booster already gives you 40% — half the ceiling — while a Lv1 attack swapper gives you 5%, a quarter of its ceiling.

Why This Matters Across the Whole Game

Card explaining that every parenthesised range in Palworld is a level ladder.

Once you know the notation, every partner skill in the game becomes readable:

  • Cattiva — "increases the player's max carrying capacity by (100~200)" — that is 100 at Lv1 and 200 at Lv5.
  • Lunaris — "carrying capacity increases by (300~600)" — 300 at Lv1, 600 at Lv5.
  • Reptyro — "reduces weight of all types of ore by (30~60)%" — 30% at Lv1.
  • Depresso — "increasing its Movement Speed and Work Speed by (100~900)%" — a nine-fold span across five levels, the widest in the game.
  • Anubis — "increases Attack by (30~50)%".
  • Astegon — "increases the damage dealt to ores by (1100~3300)%".
  • Orserk — "increases the Attack and Defense of the Pal fighting alongside you by (1~5)%".

The lower number is what you get the moment you catch the Pal. The upper number is what you get after investing in it.

Depresso is the extreme case worth flagging. At Lv1 it gives +100% movement and work speed; at Lv5, +900%. That is a Pal whose entire value is locked behind partner skill investment, and reading its range as a roll would make it look wildly inconsistent rather than simply un-levelled.

What Raises Partner Skill Level

Card explaining how Palworld partner skill levels are raised.

Partner skill level is tied to a Pal's rank, and rank is raised at the Pal Essence Condenser by feeding duplicates of the same species. The game's own Tips page states it directly: "Pals have a rank value, with higher ranks indicating higher abilities. Higher ranks can also enhance Partner Skills."

So the ladder above is the condenser ladder. Every duplicate you feed is moving a specific published number, not an abstract "power" stat — and now you can see exactly which number and by how much.

    Two practical consequences:

  • Condense the Pals whose ladders accelerate. An attack swapper going 14 → 20 is a real gain; a drop booster going 70 → 80 is a smaller one in relative terms.
  • Do not condense a Pal you are keeping for a flat effect. Some partner skills publish a single value rather than a range, and those gain nothing from rank.

A Lucky Pal can arrive pre-condensed, which is one of the four things its 0.1% spawn rate buys — and now the value of that is quantifiable rather than vague.

Conclusion

Palworld's parenthesised partner skill ranges — (5~20)%, (40~80)%, (100~900)% — are not random rolls. They are the values at partner skill levels 1 through 5, and the intermediate steps are published. The attack-swap ladder runs 5, 7, 10, 14, 20 across thirteen Pals, an accelerating curve where Lv4 to Lv5 gains six points and Lv1 to Lv2 gains two, so a skill at Lv4 is already at 70% of its ceiling. The drop-rate ladder runs 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 across thirteen more, perfectly linear at +10 per level, which means a Lv1 drop booster is already at half its ceiling while a Lv1 attack swapper is at a quarter. Once the notation is readable, every skill in the game is: Cattiva's carrying capacity is 100 at Lv1, Lunaris's is 300, and Depresso runs from +100% to +900% — a nine-fold span that makes it the Pal most dependent on investment. Partner skill level is raised by rank at the Pal Essence Condenser, so every duplicate you feed moves a specific published number.
