Surtling Cores and Molten Cores in Valheim: Two Materials, One Confusing Name
Valheim has two materials called cores and they are nothing alike. The Surtling core is a Black Forest material that gates your entire metal industry and weighs 5.0 — heavier than almost anything else you carry. The Molten core is an Ashlands material that weighs 1.0 and builds the stone portal. Confusing them costs you a trip.

The Surtling core's weight is the striking figure. At 5.0 each and a stack of only 10, a full stack is 50 carry weight — more than a Megingjord's entire +150 bonus can comfortably absorb alongside anything else. Ten cores is a real load.
The Molten core is a fifth the weight with double the stack, so a full stack is 20 weight against the Surtling core's 50.
Where Surtling Cores Come From
Four sources, and they are not equally convenient:

The Fuling Village and Dvergr lantern routes are the ones nobody uses. Both are recycling rather than farming — you get cores back from dismantling structures that already exist in the world, which means a captured Fuling Village is a core supply as well as a base site.
Surtlings are the renewable route. They spawn at fixed fire geysers in the Swamp, have only 20 health, and are weak to Frost and Water — and since the Swamp rains constantly, the rain itself blunts their fireball. A known geyser is a farm that does not deplete.

There is a third core, and it is not part of this confusion. The Black core — weight 1.0, stack 20 — comes from Infested Mines in the Mistlands and builds the Mistlands-tier crafting stations; the wiki notes 15 cores in total are needed to build one of each. It shares the word and nothing else: it is neither a fuel-tier material like the Surtling core nor an Ashlands one like the Molten core.
What Each One Builds
Surtling cores gate your metal industry. They are required for:
- Smelter
- Charcoal Kiln
- Portals
- Blast furnace
- Battering ram
Nothing about metal happens without them. That is why Burial Chambers are a mandatory stop rather than optional content, and why "how many cores do I need" is one of the first real resource questions in Valheim.
Molten cores build the Portal – Stone among other Ashlands recipes, and come from:
- Inside Putrid Holes
- On the ground inside Charred Fortresses
- As loot from Charred chests in Charred Fortresses
- Mysterious Locations spawn with 4
That last entry is the useful one. A Mysterious Location contains four Molten cores as a fixed quantity — not a roll — which makes them the most predictable source in the Ashlands.
Carrying Them
The Surtling core's 5.0 weight is a genuine logistics problem, and it is worth planning a trip around:
- Ten cores is 50 weight. Against a base carry capacity that is a substantial share.
- They do teleport, unlike ore — so a portal home is the answer, and the irony is that you need cores to build the portal in the first place.
- The first run is the expensive one. Once you have enough cores for a portal, every subsequent Burial Chamber becomes a short trip.
The Molten core at 1.0 does not pose the same problem, and by the Ashlands you have portals anyway.
Which to Worry About
- Surtling cores are an early bottleneck and stop being one once your smelting is set up.
- Farm a fire geyser rather than repeatedly clearing Burial Chambers — the spawn does not run out.
- Recycle bonfires in captured Fuling Villages if you have taken one. Free cores from a structure you were going to remove anyway.
- Plan the weight. At 5.0 each, a chamber's worth of cores is a full trip on its own.
- Molten cores are an Ashlands concern, and Mysterious Locations give exactly four — the only fixed quantity among their sources.
