Stone Golems in Valheim: Four Immunities, and Only a Pickaxe Really Works

A Valheim mountain ridge.

The Stone Golem is Valheim's clearest example of a lock-and-key enemy. It has 800 health, is immune to Fire, Frost, Poison and Spirit, resistant to Pierce and Slash — and very weak to Pickaxe damage. There is exactly one right answer, and most players walk into the Mountain without it.

Four immunities is the joint-largest list in the early and mid game, and they are chosen to close off every elemental route. Fire — the Black Forest answer. Frost — the Mountain answer. Poison and Spirit — the Swamp answers. Physically, Pierce and Slash are resisted, which removes bows, spears, swords, knives and axes from serious contention.

What is left is Blunt, which is not resisted, and Pickaxe, which it is very weak to. In practice that means an actual pickaxe, or a weapon that carries pickaxe damage.

Its faction is listed as Forest rather than Mountain, which is why Golems will attack other Mountain creatures — wolves and drakes are a different faction, and a Golem does not distinguish between them and you.

Its Two Weapon Forms

A Stone Golem spawns with one of two arm configurations, and they hit differently:

    Sledge form

AttackDamageCooldown
Ground slam110 Blunt, 100 Chop, 100 Pickaxe8s
Double smash110 Blunt, 100 Chop, 100 Pickaxe8s

    Spike form

AttackDamageCooldown
Spike110 Pierce, 100 Chop, 100 Pickaxe8s
Spike sweep110 Blunt, 100 Chop, 100 Pickaxe15s

110 damage per hit is enough to kill a player in Bronze armour outright and to badly hurt one in Iron. The saving grace is the cooldown: 8 seconds on nearly everything, and 15 seconds on the spike sweep. A Golem lands roughly one attack every eight seconds, which is slow enough to dodge consistently once you know the tell.

Every attack also carries 100 Chop and 100 Pickaxe — the highest structural damage numbers of any creature covered here. A Golem in a base is worse than a Troll, because 100 Pickaxe chews stone as fast as 100 Chop chews wood.

Where They Spawn

Card showing Stone Golem spawn conditions and their altitude requirement.

SpawnCondition
In front of Abandoned CabinsRare spawn point, 100 metre altitude, no stars
Middle of the tall MountainsLimit 1, 120 metre altitude, no stars

Both entries have an altitude requirement, which is the practical routing information. Golems live high. A Mountain approach that stays low — skirting the base of the peak for Silver rather than climbing it — meets far fewer of them, and the Abandoned Cabin spawn is the one that ambushes people, because cabins look like shelter.

Neither entry allows stars. Every Stone Golem in the world has 800 health, regardless of distance from the world centre. Like the Abomination, this enemy does not scale.

What They Drop

DropAmount
Crystal8–11
Stone5–9
Stone Golem trophy5%

Crystal is the reason to fight one. Eight to eleven per kill is a large quantity from a single creature, and it feeds the Crystal wall, the Crystal battleaxe, the Crystal Heart and the Dvergr lantern. That said, be honest about the route: Crystal also drops from Frost Blobs and grows in clusters inside Frost Caves, and the caves are the efficient source. Fighting an 800-health, four-immunity creature for a building material is a choice, not a requirement — the Golem is worth killing when it is already in your way.

The 5% trophy rate is among the stingiest in the game; twenty kills for one on average.

Killing One

Card listing Stone Golem tactics: bring a pickaxe, dodge the eight-second cycle.

  • Bring pickaxe damage. It is very weak to it, and that is the only multiplier on offer. An Antler Pickaxe or Iron Pickaxe genuinely works as a weapon here.
  • Blunt is the fallback. Not resisted, not a weakness — the honest second choice if you have no pickaxe.
  • Do not bring a bow. Pierce is resisted, and every element is immune.
  • Count to eight. Almost every Golem attack is on an 8-second cooldown. Dodge, punish, back off, repeat.
  • Watch the arms. Sledge means incoming Blunt; spike means incoming 110 Pierce, which armour handles differently.
  • Avoid Abandoned Cabins above 100 metres unless you are ready for one.
  • Never fight one near a build. 100 Chop and 100 Pickaxe per swing is the worst structural profile on the mountain.

Conclusion

Stone Golems have 800 health with no star variants, so they never scale with distance from spawn. They are immune to Fire, Frost, Poison and Spirit — closing off the Black Forest, Mountain and Swamp answers in one table — and resistant to Pierce and Slash, which removes bows, swords, spears and axes. The single opening is that they are very weak to Pickaxe damage, with Blunt as an unresisted fallback, so the correct weapon against a Stone Golem is a mining tool. They come in sledge and spike forms, both hitting for 110 on an 8-second cooldown (15 on the spike sweep), slow enough to dodge reliably once you have the rhythm, and every attack carries 100 Chop and 100 Pickaxe — the worst structural damage on the mountain, so never fight one near a build. They spawn at 100 metres in front of Abandoned Cabins and at 120 metres in the middle of tall Mountains, which means a low Silver route meets far fewer of them. The reward is 8–11 Crystal per kill — for Crystal walls, the Crystal battleaxe, the Crystal Heart and the Dvergr lantern — plus 5–9 Stone and a stingy 5% trophy. Frost Cave clusters remain the cheaper way to get Crystal, so kill Golems that are in your path rather than hunting them.
