Sparring in Valheim: Wooden Weapons, Archery Targets & T.W.I.G.

Card explaining Valheim's wooden weapons and combat practice structures.

Valheim's Call to Arms update added a way to fight your friends without consequences. Nine wooden weapons let you spar without dealing real damage, and two buildable Combat Practice structures — an Archery Target and a training dummy called T.W.I.G. — let you drill alone. On a shared server this is more useful than it sounds, because the combat system now rewards defensive timing with a resource, and timing is the one thing you cannot get from better gear.

The Nine Wooden Weapons

Iron Gate's description is the whole pitch: "By using wooden weapons you can practice combat against your friends without hurting each other."

Wooden weapons
Wooden Sword
Wooden Greatsword
Wooden Axe
Wooden Two-handed Axe
Wooden Mace
Wooden Sledge
Wooden Spear
Wooden Atgeir
Wooden Knife

Nine of the update's eighteen new weapons are wooden — half the weapon content in Call to Arms exists purely so people can practise.

They are found, not just crafted. A balance note gives this away: "Wooden Atgeirs are now a bit more rare to find." And the update added a new location, CombatRuin01, which is where a combat-practice-themed structure would sensibly live.

Two more balance details worth knowing:

  • Wooden weapons were given "more appropriate block power" — they are not just damage-less sticks; blocking with them behaves sensibly, which matters because block timing is what you are practising.
  • The Wooden Greatsword is repairable at the workbench, which was fixed during testing. If yours is worn, you do not need a higher-tier station.

And a small detail that says a lot about Iron Gate: "Wooden Sword and Wooden Greatsword now sound like they're made of wood."

The Archery Target

Card describing Valheim's buildable archery target and how it scores shots.

The Archery Target does two things that make it worth building, and Iron Gate described both when they teased it:

"The target will let you know how close to the centre you managed to shoot, and you will be able to retrieve your arrows or bolts once you're done practicing."

The feedback is the point. Valheim's bow has drop, draw time and a moving reticle, and until now the only way to judge a shot was whether a greydwarf fell over. A target that scores proximity to centre turns guesswork into practice.

Arrow recovery is what makes it repeatable. Practising with crafted ammunition would otherwise be an expensive hobby — being able to pick everything back up means a session at the target costs nothing but time.

It works for crossbows too, per Iron Gate's wording: "your arrows or bolts."

T.W.I.G.

Card describing T.W.I.G., Valheim's buildable combat training dummy.

T.W.I.G. is the melee half of the pair — a buildable structure Iron Gate describe as "a built structure to hone your fighting skills against."

It was called Battle Brother during testing. The rename is recorded in one of the game's better patch-note lines: "Battle Brother has remembered his real name: T.W.I.G."

Crucially, it fights back — at range. A later bug fix confirms the behaviour: it addressed "a crash that could occur in multiplayer when a T.W.I.G. throws a rock at a player who is at the edge of a shield dome."

So T.W.I.G. is not a static dummy. It throws rocks at you, which means it is training for the thing you actually need to practise: blocking and dodging incoming attacks on a timer you do not control.

That is exactly what the combat system now pays you for. Since Call to Arms:

  • Perfect Block no longer costs stamina.
  • A new skill, Perfect Dodge Roll, returns "a % of stamina back" when you dodge an attack that would have damaged you.
  • Perfect Blocks and Perfect Dodge Rolls generate Adrenaline, which triggers your equipped trinket's perk.

A skill that is levelled by doing it, in a game where doing it badly used to mean dying, now has a safe practice target. That is the actual value of T.W.I.G.

Setting Up a Practice Area

Card giving practical advice for a Valheim sparring setup on a server.

A practical setup for a shared world:

  1. Build both structures together — an Archery Target and a T.W.I.G. in one cleared area near the hall.
  2. Keep a set of wooden weapons in a nearby chest, so sparring does not need a trip home.
  3. Practise Perfect Blocks against T.W.I.G., since it throws on its own timing rather than yours.
  4. Wear a trinket while you practise. You generate no adrenaline at all without one, so drilling without a trinket teaches the timing but skips the reward loop.
  5. Spar before a boss, not after a wipe — the point is the timing, and timing is what fails first under pressure.

One exploit worth knowing was closed. During testing, "using mage staffs directly after dodging" granted an "abnormal amount of adrenaline." That is fixed — so if you read an old guide describing a dodge-then-cast adrenaline loop, it no longer works.

And one combat tweak pairs with the practice theme: Iron Gate "made tweaks to make knives better for combat in slopes", alongside the broader "vertical fighting improvements, now easier to hit enemies in slopes." Valheim's terrain is rarely flat, and this is the update that acknowledged it.

On a server, the sparring tools also solve a social problem. Testing a new weapon or armour set against a friend previously meant genuinely hurting them; wooden weapons remove the cost. Combined with gravestone anxiety being one of the main reasons people avoid PvP experiments, a wooden-weapon duel is now a normal evening activity rather than a risk.

Practical tips

  • Nine wooden weapons exist purely for sparring — half the update's new weapons.
  • Wooden weapons can be found, not only crafted — Wooden Atgeirs are the rarer ones.
  • The Wooden Greatsword is repairable at the workbench.
  • The Archery Target scores how close to centre you shot — and you retrieve your arrows and bolts.
  • T.W.I.G. throws rocks at you. It is a reaction trainer, not a static dummy.
  • Wear a trinket while practisingno trinket means no adrenaline.
  • Perfect Block costs no stamina, and Perfect Dodge Roll returns stamina.
  • The dodge-then-staff adrenaline exploit was fixed.

Running your own Valheim server

Sparring is a group activity, and group activities need a world that is up when people are — not one that only exists while a particular player is hosting. A gamever Valheim server keeps your practice ground, your hall and your world online around the clock for up to 10 players, takes one-click backups before updates like the coming 1.0, and applies them so client and server versions never drift apart.

Conclusion

Call to Arms gave Valheim a proper practice layer. Nine wooden weapons — sword, greatsword, axe, two-handed axe, mace, sledge, spear, atgeir and knife — let you "practice combat against your friends without hurting each other", and they behave properly, with appropriate block power and a workbench-repairable Wooden Greatsword. The buildable Archery Target tells you how close to the centre you shot and lets you retrieve your arrows or bolts, making practice free. And T.W.I.G. — renamed from Battle Brother with the line "Battle Brother has remembered his real name" — is a training structure that throws rocks at you, which makes it a genuine reaction trainer for the skills the update now rewards: Perfect Block, which no longer costs stamina, and the new Perfect Dodge Roll skill, which returns stamina and, like Perfect Block, generates Adrenaline for your equipped trinket.
