Skeletons, Rancid Remains and Draugr Elite: Three Undead, Three Different Answers

Valheim's Undead faction runs from 40 health to 600, and the three you meet inside dungeons publish an instructive set of tables. The Skeleton and the Rancid Remains are the same creature at two scales — identical weaknesses, identical resistances, 40 health against 100. The Draugr Elite at 200 shares neither, and its resistance list is the one that matters when you are deep in a Sunken Crypt.

All Three

| Skeleton | Rancid Remains | Draugr Elite | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health 0★ / 1★ / 2★ | 40 / 80 / 120 | 100 / 200 / 300 | 200 / 400 / 600 |
| Where | Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain | Burial Chambers | Swamp |
| Weak to | Blunt, Fire | Blunt, Fire | Nothing |
| Resistant to | Pierce, Frost | Pierce, Frost | Fire |
| Immune to | Poison | Poison | Poison |
| Stagger threshold | 50% | 50% | 50% |
| Attack | Sword 25 Slash / Bow 20 Pierce | Mace 20 Blunt, 30 Poison | Sword 58 Slash |
Skeleton and Rancid Remains are the same table twice. Weak to Blunt and Fire, resistant to Pierce and Frost, immune to Poison, 50% stagger. The only differences are health (40 against 100) and the attack.
The Draugr Elite inverts the useful half. It has no weakness at all, and it resists Fire — the very element that kills the other two fastest. So the loadout that clears a Burial Chamber is the wrong one for a Sunken Crypt.
Blunt Is the Dungeon Weapon
Both skeleton types are weak to Blunt and resistant to Pierce, which is the clearest possible statement about what to carry into a Burial Chamber: a mace, not a bow.
That is counter-intuitive for a lot of players, because a bow is the natural answer to enemies in a corridor. Against skeletons it is the worst physical option available — Pierce is resisted, and Pierce is what arrows deal.
Frost is also resisted by both, which puts Frostner in an awkward spot again: its 35 Blunt is a weakness hit, but its 40 Frost is reduced and its 20 Spirit does nothing against Poison-immune undead that publish no Spirit weakness. Roughly a third of that weapon lands properly.
Fire is the clean alternative, and it works on both at full value.
The Rancid Remains Poisons You

The Rancid Remains hits with a mace for 20 Blunt and 30 Poison — modest physical damage with a poison rider that is larger than the hit itself.
Two consequences follow from Valheim's poison rules:
- Poison does not stack. Several Rancid Remains hitting you applies one poison effect at the largest pending value, not several. A crowded Burial Chamber is less dangerous than it feels on that axis.
- Resistance is locked in at application. Poison Resistance Mead has to be active before the hit, not drunk afterwards.
And the obvious point: the thing poisoning you is itself immune to Poison, so poisoned weapons do nothing in return.
At 100 / 200 / 300 health it is a real fight for its tier, and the 50% stagger threshold — 50 damage at base — is comfortably reachable with the Blunt weapon it is weak to anyway.
The Draugr Elite
200, 400 and 600 health and a 58 Slash sword. Compared with the ordinary Draugr's 100 / 200 / 300 and its 48-damage attacks, the Elite is exactly double the health and about 20% harder-hitting.
Its defensive line is short but pointed:
- No weakness of any kind.
- Resistant to Fire.
- Immune to Poison.
Fire resistance is the entry to plan around, because Fire is the answer to almost every other undead in the game — Skeletons, Rancid Remains and the wider Draugr line all take it at full or bonus value, and the Elite specifically does not.
What is not resisted is Blunt, Slash, Pierce, Frost and Lightning, all of which land normally. With no weakness available, this is a fight decided by raw damage per second, and its 50% stagger threshold — 100 damage at base — is the one lever you have.
It drops Entrails like the ordinary Draugr, feeding Sausages at 4 Entrails, 1 Boar meat and 1 Thistle for four servings.
Clearing Dungeons With the Right Kit

- Carry a mace into Burial Chambers. Skeletons and Rancid Remains are both weak to Blunt and resistant to Pierce.
- Leave the bow. Pierce is the worst physical option against both skeleton types.
- Fire clears Burial Chambers, and does not clear Sunken Crypts — the Draugr Elite resists it.
- Poison is useless in every direction. All three are immune, and poisoning them back does nothing.
- Drink Poison Resistance Mead before entering, not after the first Rancid Remains connects.
- All three stagger at 50% — 20 damage on a Skeleton, 50 on a Rancid Remains, 100 on a Draugr Elite.

Dungeon clears are a group activity with loot everyone wants, and that needs one world that holds its state between sessions. A gamever Valheim server keeps it persistent for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.
Conclusion
Valheim's dungeon undead split two ways. The Skeleton at 40 / 80 / 120 and the Rancid Remains at 100 / 200 / 300 publish identical tables — weak to Blunt and Fire, resistant to Pierce and Frost, immune to Poison, 50% stagger — which makes a mace the correct dungeon weapon and a bow the worst physical option, since arrows deal the Pierce they resist. The Rancid Remains adds a 20 Blunt, 30 Poison mace hit whose poison rider outweighs its physical damage, though Valheim's poison does not stack and its resistance locks in at application, so the mead has to be up first. The Draugr Elite at 200 / 400 / 600 breaks the pattern entirely: no weakness at all and resistant to Fire, which is precisely the element that clears the other two. That makes a Burial Chamber loadout wrong for a Sunken Crypt. With nothing weak to exploit, the Elite is a damage-per-second fight, and its 50% stagger threshold at 100 damage is the only lever available.
