Seasonal Items in Valheim: What Appears When, and Why You Missed It

Card explaining Valheim's date-based seasonal item system.

If a Valheim recipe you remember has vanished from your crafting list, you probably have not lost anything — it is out of season. Iron Gate run a set of items that switch themselves on and off by date, and the system is invisible enough that people assume a bug. Here is how it works, what is in it, and the one failure mode worth knowing about.

The System

Seasonal items used to be released manually, which went badly at least once. Iron Gate's own account of the 2023 autumn items:

"It was released from the Public Test Branch a bit later than we had hoped, which meant that you didn't get the jack-o-turnip and the pointy hat until after Halloween was over. We're sorry about this, but we will make sure to switch this system to an automatic one in the future."

They did. A later patch added "automatic toggling of seasonal items" — Iron Gate's note at the time: "We have changed the seasonal items to be set to activate depending on the date. Since we're in December, that means the yuletide items will be available right now!"

So availability is driven by your system date, not by a patch. Nothing is downloaded when a season starts and nothing is removed when it ends — the recipes are simply gated.

One bug in that system is worth knowing about, because it explains an odd historical gap: Iron Gate "fixed an issue where seasonal groups that extended over a year change wouldn't work in the new year." A season spanning 31 December to 1 January did not carry over. That is fixed, but it is the kind of edge case that makes people think their game is broken.

What Is Seasonal

SeasonItems Iron Gate have named
Autumn / HalloweenJack-o-turnip, Pointy hat
Yuletide / DecemberYuletide items
SummerMidsummer pole, Midsummer crown

The Midsummer entry is the clearest evidence of how the toggle behaves, because Iron Gate announced the switch-off directly in a patch note: "Midsummer pole & Midsummer crown recipes have been disabled (it's officially autumn!)."

Note what that tells you: the recipes are disabled, not deleted. Anything you already built stays built.

The jack-o-turnip was a community request"You have been asking for the jack-o-turnip, and here it is!" — and the pointy hat arrived alongside it, described as "a very stylish and pointy hat" and elsewhere as "a brand new witch hat."

We are not publishing exact date windows, because Iron Gate have never published them. What they have confirmed is the mechanism (date-driven, automatic) and the rough seasons each group belongs to. If you want an item, be in the game during its obvious season.

The Anniversary Items

Card listing Valheim's five-year anniversary items and emotes.

Valheim's five-year anniversary patch (0.221.10, February 2026) added a batch of celebration content, which is a different thing from the seasonal rotation — it shipped as permanent new content:

TypeItem
HatCelebratory Cap
WeaponEarly Axes
MaterialsMysterious Axe Head, Curious Axe Head
ConsumableFrosted Sweetbread
Build pieceFlower Garland
Build pieceFey Lights
EmotesVibe, LoveYou
HairstylesChampion, Chronicler, Sunbringer

The Early Axes are the interesting entry, because they come with two named materialsMysterious Axe Head and Curious Axe Head — which implies a small discovery or crafting step rather than a straight recipe unlock.

And the emote system got a real improvement: a radial menu for emotes was added, plus release-to-select in a later patch — "if you continue holding down the radial menu button/key after the radial menu appears, you can select an emote by releasing the button/key."

Emotes were also relocated on controller, per the same era of changes, so if you cannot find them, the radial menu is where to look.

What This Means on a Server

Card giving practical seasonal item advice for a Valheim server.

Three practical points for a shared world:

  1. Build seasonal decorations while the recipe is live. The structure persists after the season ends — it is the recipe that gets disabled, not the object. A Yule-decorated hall stays decorated in March.
  2. Do not troubleshoot a missing seasonal recipe. If a jack-o-turnip is not craftable in April, that is the system working. Check the season before checking your install.
  3. Seasonal availability follows the date, not the server. It is a client-side, date-driven gate rather than a server setting, so there is nothing to configure on a dedicated server for it.

And a timing note that matters this year. With 1.0 arriving on 9 September, Iron Gate recommending "you start a new playthrough to get the best possible Valheim experience", and a new chunked world save system waiting on the Public Test Branch, anything decorative you build in an old world this month is worth backing up manually first.

If you are planning a seasonal build for the autumn, note the sequence: 1.0 lands 9 September, and the autumn seasonal window follows shortly after. A fresh Deep North world will be young but decorable by then.

Practical tips

  • Seasonal items toggle automatically by date. Nothing is patched in or out.
  • Recipes are disabled, not deleted — anything already built stays built.
  • Autumn: jack-o-turnip and pointy hat. December: yuletide items. Summer: Midsummer pole and crown.
  • A missing seasonal recipe is not a bug. Check the date first.
  • Seasons spanning New Year used to fail to carry over. Fixed.
  • The five-year anniversary items are permanent, not seasonal — including Early Axes, Frosted Sweetbread, Flower Garland and Fey Lights.
  • Emotes have a radial menu with release-to-select.

Running your own Valheim server

Decorations are the part of a base built purely for other people to see, which only pays off on a world that stays up between sessions rather than one tied to a single player being online. A gamever Valheim server keeps your hall available around the clock for up to 10 players, takes one-click backups — worth having before a version as big as 1.0 — and applies updates so client and server versions never drift apart.

Conclusion

Valheim's seasonal items switch themselves on and off according to the date, a system Iron Gate built after the 2023 autumn items arrived "after Halloween was over". The known groups are autumn — the jack-o-turnip and pointy hatyuletide items in December, and the Midsummer pole and crown in summer, whose switch-off Iron Gate announced outright: "Midsummer pole & Midsummer crown recipes have been disabled (it's officially autumn!)". The key word is disabled: recipes are gated, but anything you already built stays built. Exact date windows have never been published, so the practical rule is simply to build while the recipe is live and not to troubleshoot its absence out of season. Separately, the five-year anniversary patch added permanent content — Celebratory Cap, Early Axes (from Mysterious and Curious Axe Heads), Frosted Sweetbread, Flower Garland, Fey Lights, the Vibe and LoveYou emotes, and a radial emote menu with release-to-select.
