Runestones and Vegvisir in Valheim: The Stones That Find Your Boss

A runestone standing in a Valheim forest.

Valheim scatters large rune-carved rocks across the world, and they come in two kinds that look almost identical. Ordinary runestones carry lore. Vegvisir mark the nearest boss altar on your map — which turns finding a boss from a biome-wide search into a single visit. Knowing which structures hide which Vegvisir is the difference between an afternoon of sailing and a five-minute detour.

Two Different Stones

Ordinary runestones have one useful property beyond the reading: "Animals also spawn close to 'their' stone." A boar stone has boars wandering near it, a deer stone has deer. If you need a specific animal for taming, find its runestone.

Vegvisir are the mechanical ones. In Hugin's words, they were "scattered throughout the lands by Odin as signposts pointing toward the ritual grounds of the Forsaken" — and in practice they uncover the location of the relevant boss and pin it on your world map.

With the "No Map" world modifier enabled, a Vegvisir works differently but still works: instead of placing a pin, the camera slowly turns toward the boss location. So even a no-map run gets the signpost.

Where Each One Hides

BossWhere the Vegvisir is
EikthyrAt the Sacrificial Stones — the formation around your spawn
The ElderIn Burial Chambers, or beside ruined towers
BonemassIn Sunken Crypts, or at Swamp Runestone Towers
ModerIn Frost Caves, or beside a Mountain Tower
YagluthNear the Stonehenge rock formation
The QueenIn Infested Mines
FaderIn Charred Fortresses, and very rarely atop Charred Ruins
A Mysterious LocationIn Putrid Holes, and at two Mysterious Locations

Eikthyr's is free and most players walk past it. It is at the Sacrificial Stones you spawn beside, which means the first boss's location is available within seconds of starting a world.

The pattern from The Elder onward is that Vegvisir live inside dungeons. Burial Chambers, Sunken Crypts, Frost Caves, Infested Mines, Charred Fortresses and Putrid Holes all carry them — which means clearing dungeons and finding bosses are the same activity, not two separate jobs.

Yagluth is the outlier. The Plains Vegvisir is found near a Stonehenge rock formation out in the open rather than inside a dungeon — so if you are hunting it, you are looking at terrain rather than entrances.

And there is an eighth Vegvisir pointing at a "Mysterious Location", found in Putrid Holes and at two Mysterious Locations themselves — which is an Ashlands-era addition beyond the seven bosses.

What the Stones Do Not Do

Card explaining the limits of Valheim's Vegvisir stones.

A Vegvisir is a convenience, not a requirement. "Bosses can be summoned even if their altars have not been identified with vegvisirs." If you stumble onto an altar without ever reading a stone, it works exactly the same. You are never blocked by a missing Vegvisir.

A Vegvisir only reveals the closest spawn to itself. Not the closest to you — the closest to the stone. So two Vegvisir found in different parts of the world will usually pin two different altars.

And it will not reveal a second one. "If the map location of the closest boss spawn is already known, no new spawn will be revealed." Reading a second Vegvisir for the same boss, near an altar you have already pinned, does nothing at all. That is the most common "the stone didn't work" report, and it is working as intended.

The practical consequence is that Vegvisir are worth reading opportunistically, not hunted deliberately. They sit inside dungeons you were already going to clear. Read every one you pass; do not sail across the map looking for one.

Altar runestones are a third category. Each boss has its own runestone at or near its altar, containing the hint for what the altar wants — the offering, and how to make it. Those are the stones that tell you Eikthyr wants deer trophies, and they are only readable once you have arrived.

Practical tips

  • Runestones carry lore; Vegvisir pin boss altars. They look similar.
  • Animals spawn near their own runestone — useful for taming.
  • Eikthyr's Vegvisir is at the Sacrificial Stones, where you spawn.
  • Most Vegvisir are inside dungeons — clearing them finds your bosses.
  • Yagluth's is the outlier, near a Stonehenge formation in the open.
  • A Vegvisir reveals the altar closest to itself, not to you.
  • It reveals nothing if that altar is already marked — this is not a bug.
  • Bosses can be summoned without ever reading a Vegvisir.

Running your own Valheim server

A pinned altar is shared knowledge — one player reading a Vegvisir marks it for the world, and everyone sails to the same point. A gamever Valheim server keeps that map persistent for up to 10 players, with one-click backups so a world's worth of discovered locations is never lost.

Conclusion

Valheim's rune-carved stones split into two kinds. Runestones carry lore and creature tips, and have one quiet use: animals spawn near their own stone. Vegvisir are the mechanical ones — Odin's signposts to the Forsaken — and each marks the nearest boss altar on your map, or turns the camera toward it under the No Map modifier. Eikthyr's sits at the Sacrificial Stones where you spawn; from there they live inside dungeons — Burial Chambers, Sunken Crypts, Frost Caves, Infested Mines, Charred Fortresses and Putrid Holes — with Yagluth's near a Stonehenge formation as the outlier, and an eighth pointing at a Mysterious Location. Three limits are worth knowing: a Vegvisir reveals the altar closest to the stone, not to you, it reveals nothing if that altar is already pinned, and bosses can be summoned without one entirely.
