Resin and Feathers in Valheim: The Two Things Falling Out of Every Tree

Resin and feathers in a Valheim inventory.

Every tree in Valheim has a 50% chance to drop extra items when felled, and the two that keep appearing are Resin and Feathers. Their rates are not equal across trees: Pine drops resin at 44.44% where a Beech or Fir manages 16.67%, and a Yggdrasil shoot drops feathers at 50% where a Pine gives 11.11%.

If you are short of either, you are probably chopping the wrong tree.

Every tree rolls a 50% chance to drop extras at all, then draws from its own table — so the percentages above are shares of that roll, not absolute chances per tree.

Pine is the resin tree. At 44.44% it is nearly three times a Beech or Fir, and it needs only a Stone axe in the Black Forest.

Yggdrasil shoots are the feather tree at 50%, but they need a Black metal axe and the Mistlands, which makes them a late answer to an early problem.

Two trees give neither. Ancient Trees drop no resin or feathers at all, and Scorched Trees substitute Charcoal resin at 33.33% — a different item entirely.

Resin's Other Sources

Resin does not only come from trees, and the alternative is often faster:

  • Greyling, Greydwarf, Greydwarf shaman, Greydwarf brute and Kvastur all drop it.
  • Chests in the Meadows occasionally contain it.
  • Barrels next to Greydwarf building spawns in the Black Forest.

The Greydwarf route is the reliable one early. Any Black Forest fight produces resin without a single tree being cut, which is why resin rarely bottlenecks a player who is actually exploring.

Its description explains its two jobs: "Sticky tree resin which insulates well. If put to the flame it burns slow and steady."

Insulation and fuel. It builds the Fermenter, the Karve, the Raft, the Resin candle and the Jack-o-turnip — and it is the standard torch fuel.

Feathers and What They Cost You

Feathers are the arrow tax. Fire arrows, Flinthead arrows and Bronzehead arrows all take them, and every arrow tier after that continues the pattern — so a serious archer burns feathers faster than any other material.

Chickens are the renewable answer. Hens and Chickens drop feathers, which turns a coop into a feather farm rather than only an egg farm.

They also build the Dragon bed, which is the only non-ammunition use worth planning around.

At 0.1 weight and a stack of 50, a full stack weighs 5 — feathers are never a carrying problem, only a supply one.

Charcoal Resin, the Ashlands Variant

The Scorched Tree does not drop ordinary resin. It drops Charcoal resin at 33.33% on most variants — and on the larger broad variant, the split shifts to Ashwood at 80% and Charcoal resin at 20%.

That is a real difference between Scorched Tree variants, and it means resin-hunting in the Ashlands rewards the smaller trees while wood-hunting rewards the larger ones.

Do not plan to farm ordinary resin in the Ashlands. Nothing there produces it.

Where to Chop for Which

Card recommending which Valheim tree to chop for resin or feathers.

  • Need resin? Chop Pine in the Black Forest44.44%, on a Stone axe — or just kill Greydwarves, which drop it directly.
  • Need feathers early? Chop Beech and Fir, at 16.67% each, and build a chicken coop as soon as you can.
  • Need both at once? Chop Oak40% resin and 20% feathers, plus 25 small-log drops at 50% Finewood, the best all-round tree in the game.
  • Do not bother with Ancient Trees for either. They give neither, and their value is Ancient bark alone.
  • Remember every extras roll is a 50% coin flip first, so the tree tables above describe what you get when something drops, not how often.

Oak is the answer to most questions here. It is the only tree with a strong rate in both columns and the best wood yield in the game, which is why an Oak stand is worth protecting.

Conclusion

Every Valheim tree rolls a 50% chance to drop extras, and Resin and Feathers are what usually appear. Pine leads on resin at 44.44% — nearly three times a Beech or Fir's 16.67% — with Oak at 40% close behind, while Yggdrasil shoots lead on feathers at 50% against Pine's 11.11%. Ancient Trees drop neither, and Scorched Trees substitute Charcoal resin at 33.33%, shifting to 20% on the larger broad variant where Ashwood rises to 80%. Resin has a faster non-tree route — Greylings, Greydwarves, shamans, brutes and Kvastur all drop it, along with Meadows chests and Black Forest barrels — and it insulates and burns, building the Fermenter, Karve, Raft and Resin candle. Feathers weigh 0.1, come from six bird types plus Meadows, Black Forest and Burial Chamber chests, and are the arrow tax on every tier from Flinthead upward — which makes a chicken coop the only renewable answer.
