Potions in Dragonwilds: What Survived the Healing Rework

Card summarising Dragonwilds' potion system after healing potions were removed.

The most important thing to know about potions in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is what happened to them. Jagex removed healing potions entirely in the health rework — "Healing potions will be removed (stat pots are staying)" — and handed that job to food. If you are returning after a break, or reading an older guide, the healing-potion advice in it is obsolete. Here is what the system looks like now.

What Changed, and Why

Jagex's reasoning was thematic rather than balance-driven:

"We're shifting the focus away from healing potions. They feel a lot less RuneScapey than the combination of 'Stat Pots' and cooked food in your inventory, so we're turning our attention towards our latest skill — Fishing. Food will now serve as a key driver in healing a significant chunk of your HP."

Food now instantly restores HP and carries other perks alongside. Fish specifically are best in class, which is the whole point of the change — it exists to make Fishing worth levelling.

Your existing healing potions were not deleted. Jagex handled the transition kindly: "Your existing potions will still exist but will be disassembled on use, rather than consumed. You'll get your components back, and won't have to disassemble them one by one!" If you have a stack sitting in a chest from before the rework, use them — you get the materials back.

Consumption got faster too. The animation for consuming food, drinks and potions was removed "to remove the friction with currently trying to heal during combat" — replaced by "a brief cooldown between consumptions to prevent you stuffing even the slightest of wounds with a lifetime's supply of shrimp."

And potion effects now persist. Jagex fixed an issue where "Potion Effects would be removed between game sessions/on logout" — which matters on a server, where people log in and out constantly.

The Potions That Exist

Card listing every named potion documented in Dragonwilds.

PotionWhat it does
AntipoisonResists poison buildup — see below
Greater Health Potion (T3)A tier-3 health potion, unlockable
Fishing PotionsFishing support
Focused FishingA Fishing potion with a known tooltip bug
Weapon PoisonApplied to a melee weapon to poison your blade
Poison ArrowsThe Ranged equivalent
Plant CureAnimal Bone + Weeds — cures crop disease

Antipoison is the one with real history. Jagex rewrote it twice:

  1. The recipe changed. "We realised a recipe didn't make sense… we'll be changing Antipoison to require Marentill rather than Harralander — just like the rest of Gielinor." If you memorised the old recipe, it is wrong now.
  2. The effect changed. Antipoison resists poison buildup rather than fully preventing it. Full immunity moved elsewhere.

Where immunity went is the part people miss. Jagex "moved the poison immunity to the Fungal Fortitude Buff that you can get from cooking certain foods" — and confirmed that buff fully prevents poison buildup. Antipoison and Fungal Fortitude stack.

So the correct answer to "how do I stop being poisoned" is food, not a potion — the same direction the whole rework pushed.

One related fix worth knowing: "ambient Swamp Gas doesn't proc poison stacking when in the Toxic Swamp." If you remember the swamp poisoning you for standing in it, that was a bug and it is fixed.

Brewing, Herbs and the Fermentation Barrel

Card explaining Dragonwilds' Brewing Cauldron, herbs and Fermentation Barrel.

The Brewing Cauldron is where potions are made, and access to some recipes runs through the Ranged skill tree: "As you progress through your Ranged skill tree, you'll unlock the ability to brew new potions at the Brewing Cauldron using the new herb: Kwuarm. Brew this with a Poison Ichor to create — you guessed it — Weapon Poison."

That is a genuinely unusual dependency, and worth flagging on a shared server: the poison line is behind Ranged levels, not a Cooking or crafting skill. Whoever levels Ranged is your poison supplier.

The Fermentation Barrel upgrades potions a tier: it "allows you to upgrade Tier 3 Potions into more powerful Tier 4 potions." It arrived alongside the Advanced Tannery and traders across all of Ashenfall.

So potion progression is not only about brewing better recipes — it is also about reprocessing what you already have. A stock of Tier 3 potions is not a dead end.

Herbs moved from loot to farming, which is the biggest practical change to how you get potion inputs:

"Existing Kwuarm sources, including enemy packs, will now be replaced with Kwuarm seeds for farming."

And separately: "We've replaced any spawns of Kwuarm herbs in chests, drop tables, etc. with Seeds, so you can grow them at your own pace, too!"

This is a hard change of habit. Killing things no longer gives you herbs — it gives you seeds. If you want potions, someone has to farm.

And farming has its own support tools, all of which feed the potion supply chain:

ToolPurpose
Farming Plots — Oak, Ash, WillowThe growing beds
Water Barrel / Raincatcher BarrelWatering
Compost BinComposting for yield
Plant Cure — Animal Bone + WeedsCures disease
Humidify (Skill Spell)A rolling raincloud that waters every plot in its path
Humidify UpgradeThe rain also cures plants it touches

Humidify plus its upgrade is the automation of the whole chore. One cast waters and cures a row of plots — which on a six-player base is the difference between farming being someone's job and farming being nobody's problem.

Running Potions on a Shared Server

Card giving practical potion and farming advice for a Dragonwilds group.

The supply chain is long enough that specialising pays. Seeds → farming plots → water and compost → herbs → Brewing Cauldron → Fermentation Barrel. Six people each running that chain badly is worse than one person running it well.

Three things to sort out early:

  1. Decide who farms. Herbs come from seeds now. Somebody has to plant them.
  2. Note the Ranged dependency. Kwuarm brewing unlocks through the Ranged skill tree — so your archer and your brewer may need to be the same person, or at least coordinate.
  3. Cook for Fungal Fortitude. Poison immunity comes from food, and it stacks with Antipoison. That is a Cooking job, not a brewing one.

Storage is not a constraint any more. Because all chests are remotely accessible for crafting, the Brewing Cauldron does not have to sit beside your herb store — put the barrel where the space is.

Two known issues so you do not chase them:

  • Focused Fishing shows "x%" in its tooltip text rather than a number. The potion works.
  • Fishing Potions did not display correct tooltips — fixed, but a good reminder that tooltip text has been unreliable in this system.

And do not forget potions now survive a logout, so buffing before a session and then reconnecting no longer wastes them.

Practical tips

  • Healing potions are gone. Food is your healing — and fish are best in class.
  • Old healing potions disassemble on use and return their components.
  • Antipoison uses Marentill, not Harralander, and resists poison rather than preventing it.
  • Full poison immunity comes from the Fungal Fortitude food buff, which stacks with Antipoison.
  • Herbs come from seeds now — Kwuarm was removed from drop tables. Someone must farm.
  • Kwuarm brewing unlocks via the Ranged skill tree.
  • The Fermentation Barrel upgrades Tier 3 potions to Tier 4.
  • Humidify waters every plot in its path — and with its upgrade, cures them too.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

A potion supply chain is exactly the kind of system that suffers in a host-and-play session: crops keep growing only while the world exists, and a farm that only runs when one particular person is online is not a farm. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps your plots, your barrels and your stock available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds' potion system was reshaped around one decision: healing potions were removed and food took over healing, with stat potions staying. Old healing potions disassemble on use and give their components back. Antipoison now uses Marentill rather than Harralander and resists poison buildup — full immunity moved to the Fungal Fortitude food buff, and the two stack. Brewing happens at the Brewing Cauldron, with the Kwuarm poison line unlocking through the Ranged skill tree, and the Fermentation Barrel upgrades Tier 3 potions into Tier 4. The biggest change to supply is that herbs no longer drop — seeds do, so potions now depend on someone farming, backed by Farming Plots, Water and Raincatcher Barrels, the Compost Bin, Plant Cure and the Humidify spell that waters and cures a whole row at once.
