Mushrooms, Dandelion and Thistle in Valheim: Four Hours, and They Come Back Even If You Dig Them Up

Mushrooms on the forest floor in Valheim.

Valheim's four timer-respawning ground forages — Mushroom, Yellow mushroom, Dandelion and Thistle — all come back on the same 14,400-second, four-hour clock. And they carry an advantage berry bushes do not: mushrooms will return if the ground is cleared or even excavated.

That single line makes them the only genuinely renewable forage in the game.

On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.

The Four Ground Items

MushroomMeadows, Black Forest, Swamp1515900 s
Yellow mushroomBurial Chambers, Troll Caves, Sunken Crypts1030600 s
DandelionMeadows— (material)
ThistleBlack Forest, Swamp— (material)

All four weigh 0.1, stack to 50 and teleport, and all four respawn 240 minutes — four hours — after picking.

Two Mistlands mushrooms sit outside this group. Magecap and Jotun puffs are also picked off the ground, but the wiki classes them as crops: they are gathered in the Mistlands and then replanted with a Cultivator, one plant yielding three, rather than regrowing on a timer where you found them. They are a farming problem, not a foraging one, which is why they are not in the table above.

The ordinary Mushroom has the highest health value of any early forage at 15, above every berry including Cloudberries at 13. The wiki calls it "almost negligible as a food" because 15 stamina is poor — but as a health slot it is the strongest thing you can pick off the ground.

Yellow mushrooms invert that: 10 health and 30 stamina over a shorter 600 seconds.

Dandelion and Thistle are materials, not food. Neither publishes health or stamina; both exist for cooking and mead recipes.

The Regrowth Rule

This is the mechanical difference from berries, and the wiki states it directly:

Unlike the case with raspberries and blueberries, which do not return if the plant itself is removed, mushrooms will return if the ground is cleared or even excavated.

So a mushroom patch survives base construction. You can hoe it, dig it out, build on it, and the mushrooms still come back on the four-hour timer.

Yellow mushrooms carry the strongest version of this. In dungeons they are, in the wiki's words, "the only part of an underground chamber that regenerates." Everything else in a Burial Chamber or Sunken Crypt — chests, spawners, decorations — is one-time. The yellow mushrooms are not.

That makes a cleared Burial Chamber a permanent yellow mushroom farm, which is worth remembering before you seal one up.

Boars will not eat yellow mushrooms, so they are safe to leave lying near a pen.

Where to Find Them

Card explaining where to find Valheim thistle and dandelion.

Thistle is the one with a genuine finding technique:

  • Found in the Black Forest and Swamp.
  • Most easily found at night, because "the blue glow that surrounds it is more visible in the dark."
  • Spawns in groups of 1–5, so one find is often several.

That inverts the usual advice about Valheim nights. The Black Forest at night is more dangerous and more productive — a thistle run is one of the few reasons to be out there after dark deliberately.

Dandelion is simpler: found on the ground in the Meadows, and also dropped by Greydwarf brutes — the only forage item with a combat source.

Ordinary mushrooms span three biomes — Meadows, Black Forest and Swamp — which makes them the most consistently available forage in the game.

What They Are For

Card listing what Valheim mushrooms, dandelion and thistle are used in.

ItemNotable uses
MushroomCooking, taming, building
Yellow mushroomMead base: Medium stamina (x10), eaten raw
DandelionMead base: Minor healing, Mead base: Medium healing, Midsummer crown, Spice rack, Maypole, Yellow banner
ThistleMead base: Frost resistance (x5), Black Forest buffet platter, Blood pudding, Maypole, Spice rack

Thistle gates frost resistance. Mead base: Frost resistance takes Honey x10, Thistle x5, Bloodbag x2, Greydwarf eye x1 — and frost resistance is what makes the Mountain survivable before Wolf armour.

Yellow mushrooms gate the Medium stamina mead at x10 per base, alongside Cloudberries x10 — ten dungeon mushrooms per batch, which is a real dungeon trip.

Dandelion appears in both early healing meads, at only x1 each — the cheapest ingredient in either recipe, and the one people forget to pick.

Pick dandelions every time you see one. One per mead base means a handful covers a long stretch, and they are trivially easy to walk past.

Running your own Valheim server

Four-hour respawn timers span sessions by design, which only works on a world that keeps its clock. A gamever Valheim server keeps it running for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.

Conclusion

Valheim's four ground forages — Mushroom, Yellow mushroom, Dandelion and Thistle — all weigh 0.1, stack to 50, and respawn after 14,400 seconds, four hours. Their advantage over berries is structural: mushrooms return even if the ground is cleared or excavated, where a destroyed berry bush is gone permanently — and yellow mushrooms are "the only part of an underground chamber that regenerates," which turns a cleared Burial Chamber into a permanent farm. The ordinary Mushroom's 15 health is the highest of any ground forage, above Cloudberries at 13, while the Yellow mushroom inverts it at 10 health and 30 stamina. Thistle glows blue and is easiest to find at night, spawning in groups of 1–5, and it gates Mead base: Frost resistance at x5. Dandelion comes from the Meadows and from Greydwarf brutes, and appears in both early healing meads at only x1 — the cheapest and most-forgotten ingredient in the game.
