Mods on an Enshrouded Dedicated Server: What Works (and What Doesn't)

A common question for new Enshrouded server owners is "how do I install mods?" — and the honest answer is different from games like Valheim or Rust. Enshrouded has no official mod support and no dedicated-server mod framework, so it's important to set expectations before you go looking for a plugins folder that doesn't exist. This guide explains what's actually possible today.
The short version
- No official mods / Workshop. Enshrouded has no built-in mod support and no Steam Workshop.
- No server-side mod loader. Unlike Valheim's BepInEx or Rust's Oxide/Carbon, there's no supported framework to load mods on an Enshrouded dedicated server.
- Community mods are mostly client-side. What community mods exist tend to be local tweaks on a player's own game (visual, UI, quality-of-life), not server content.
- Updates frequently break them. Because these mods are unofficial and hook into the game directly, a game update — especially a big one — commonly breaks them until the author updates.
So there's no "install mods on the server" step the way other survival games have.
What you can customise on the server
The good news: a lot of what people want mods for, Enshrouded already exposes as server settings — no mods needed:
- Difficulty — enemy damage, survival drain, and more via presets or Custom
gameSettings(see difficulty settings). - Day/night length and Pacify All Enemies on the Settings tab.
- Player slots up to 16 (see max players).
- Roles and access via userGroups.
For most groups, tuning these covers the experience they were hoping a mod would give.
About client-side mods
If a player chooses to run a local, client-side cosmetic or QoL mod on their own game, that's their setup — it doesn't get installed on the server, and it shouldn't be required to join. Keep these points in mind:
- They can break after any update — expect to disable them when the game patches.
- They shouldn't be a requirement for your co-op group; the server doesn't serve them.
- Always back up (see backup & restore) before experimenting with anything that touches the game.
What about official mod support later?
The developers have talked about mod support as a possibility down the line. If Enshrouded ever ships official mod tools, that would be the right (and safe) way to add server content — until then, there's no supported server-mod path, and gamever's server settings are how you customise the game.
Additional Tips
- There's no server mod framework — don't look for a plugins folder.
- Use server settings for difficulty, slots and roles instead of mods.
- Client-side mods break on updates — and aren't served by the server.
- Never require a mod for your group to join.
- Back up first before anyone experiments locally.
Conclusion
Enshrouded isn't a mod-driven game like Valheim or Rust: there's no official mod support and no server-side mod loader, and the community client-side mods that exist tend to break on updates. The upside is that gamever already exposes the things people usually mod for — difficulty, day/night, slots and roles — as real server settings. Tune those, and your Enshrouded server plays exactly how your group wants, no mods required.
