Magic in Dragonwilds: Every Spell School and What Each Element Does

Magic is one of the three combat styles in Dragonwilds, added to the skill tree in Update 1 - 0.8.0 on 17 June 2025. The wiki frames the split plainly: "combat spells can be cast to efficiently fight monsters from a distance, whereas utility spells have numerous uses." This guide covers the first half — the elemental spell schools, how magic damage is actually built up, and what casting requires — not the battlestaff catalogue or the utility-spell list, which are their own guides.
The Elements: Air, Water, and Fire Runes

Runes are Magic's ammunition — pick one in the inventory's second tab and right-click it to autocast. Three elements have working combat numbers today:
- Air — base damage 13–22, passive Knockdown, unlocks at level 1 ("dealing high single target damage and knocking your enemies down").
- Water — base damage 7–13, passive Slowness, unlocks at level 7 (damages and slows enemies "while also healing yourself and your allies"; kills can spawn water orbs).
- Fire — base damage 6–10, passive Burn, unlocks at level 21 (medium AoE damage that builds Burning "to reduce them to ash").
- Earth — listed as N/A for both damage and passive. The wiki's footnote says "combat mechanics are scheduled to release in future updates," so it's a documented-but-not-yet-playable fourth school, not a fabricated one.
One inconsistency worth flagging: the Runes section's own summary still says "currently, only air runes and fire runes can be used for combat magic" — but that reads as stale next to the rest of the same page. The Leveling table and a 23 June 2026 update-history entry both confirm Water Magic is live at level 7 with its own damage and passive already filled in. Trust the table and update history over that one leftover line.
How Magic Damage Actually Works

Base rune damage is only the floor. The wiki documents several separate modifiers on top of it:
- Staffs carry "a passive rune damage multiplier" — no per-staff figure is broken out in this source, so treat individual staff numbers as undocumented here (that's the battlestaff guide's job).
- Magical Focus, craftable at level 39, imbues an equipped staff with +15% damage for 10 minutes.
- Amulet of Magic: +12.5% magic damage while worn.
- Unholy Symbol: +15% all damage, but -15 max HP while worn — damage traded for survivability, not free.
- Lesser Magic Potion: +25% magic crit chance for 10 minutes.
- A full magic armour set adds -50% stamina regen delay (1/3 pieces), +17.5% magic attack speed (2/3), and +15% magic crit chance (3/3).
- Level 16 unlocks Arcane Expertise ("an additional powerful magical attack at the end of staff magic combos") — the rune table's combo column is literally headed "Arcane Expertise," tying each element's finisher to that passive, though the source doesn't spell out the link beyond the header.
The wiki never states whether these modifiers stack additively or multiplicatively — that's undocumented, so treat each figure as standalone rather than summing them into a combined total.
What Casting Requires: Runes, Stamina, and Refunds

Two resources gate every cast. First, runes: every spell consumes them from inventory, which is why level-20 Runic Refund matters — a "30% chance to preserve runes when attacking with magic," meaning roughly three in ten casts cost nothing.
Second, magical stamina. A passive active at every level "reduces the cost of magical stamina drain by 0.5% per level." At the level-99 cap, that's 0.5% × 99 = 49.5% less stamina drain than a level-1 caster — nearly half, from leveling alone. Staffs also cost you your off-hand: "staffs are a two-handed weapon; thus, players cannot equip shields while wielding staffs," so a mage build trades block entirely for the staff's damage multiplier.
Leveling the Skill: Milestones to 99
Update 0.11 ("Enter Dowdun Reach...", 31 March 2026) raised the cap from 50 to 99. Key thresholds from the wiki's Leveling table: 1 Air Magic, 5 Secondary Attacks, 7 Water Magic, 11 Surge, 16 Arcane Expertise, 20 Runic Refund, 21 Fire Magic, 25 Afterimage, 30 Confuse, 34 Magic Potion recipe, 39 Magical Focus recipe, 44 Greater Confuse, 99 Magic Skillcape (plus trimmed variant). Before Update 0.8 added this tree, the wiki notes the only way to level Magic was finding skill tomes. XP now also comes from combat and reward tomes like the Tome of the Dragon Slayer, plus temporary boosts (Wild Pie: +10% XP for 10 minutes; Inspiring Amulet of Magic: +5% XP while worn) — there are no dedicated Magic XP potions, unlike most other skills.
Quick reference
- Three working elements: Air (13–22 dmg, Knockdown), Water (7–13 dmg, Slowness), Fire (6–10 dmg, Burn). Earth is documented but not combat-ready.
- Level gates: Air at 1, Water at 7, Fire at 21, Arcane Expertise at 16, Runic Refund at 20, Skillcape at 99.
- Stamina discount: 0.5% per level → 49.5% less drain at level 99 (0.5% × 99).
- Runic Refund (level 20): roughly 30% of casts don't consume a rune.
- Staffs are two-handed — no shield while one is equipped.
Running your own Dragonwilds server
A magic build depends on level-gated unlocks and gear — Magical Focus at 39, Runic Refund at 20, a full magic armour set for its crit and attack-speed tiers. Farming those thresholds and the drops that stack on top of them goes faster with a crew. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps the world running between sessions, supports up to six players, and takes one-click backups before anyone tests a risky build.
Conclusion
Dragonwilds' Magic skill currently runs on three working elemental schools — Air, Water, and Fire, each with its own base damage range and passive — plus a documented fourth, Earth, explicitly pending future combat mechanics. Damage stacks through staffs' own multiplier, the craftable Magical Focus (+15% for 10 minutes), amulets, potions, and a three-tier armour set, though the wiki never confirms how those modifiers combine. Casting costs both runes (offset ~30% of the time by level-20 Runic Refund) and magical stamina (cut 49.5% by level 99), and the entire tree postdates Update 0.8 — before that, skill tomes were the only way to level Magic at all.
