Logs and Planks in Dragonwilds: Five Woods, an Axe Ladder, and a Plank With No Use
Dragonwilds has five tree woods, and each one is locked behind a specific logging axe. Ash needs nothing; yew needs an adamant logging axe. The sawmill turns logs into planks at a flat one log to two planks, but it only does so for three of the five woods — and one of those three planks, according to the wiki, currently has no construction use at all.
The Axe Ladder

Ash is the only wood you can gather without an axe at all — the wiki lists branches, saplings and thorny vines as sources alongside ash trees themselves. That makes it the wood every early recipe is built around.
Willow logs are described as fuel, not timber. Their in-game description reads "A highly efficient fuel. Required for smelting more advanced metals." — so a willow tree is a furnace resource first.
Yew's description is about bows and furniture: "exceptionally durable and heat-resistant… highly elastic, decay-resistant, and excellent for bending, making it a perfect choice for bows and high-quality furniture carving."
Two woods sit outside the ladder. Blightwood is chopped from the pale roots on larger trees in the Bloodblight Swamp, and hollow bark drops from dead trees, found lying around Fellhollow.

The wiki's own text is slightly behind the game here. It says the sawmill "is currently used to make ash planks and oak planks" — but yew planks were added in Eye on Ashenfall 0.12.0 and are made the same way, one yew log to two yew planks. Treat the sentence as stale rather than as a limit.
Like the grindstone, it processes very slowly — and like the grindstone, filling it just before sleeping processes a whole stack instantly.
Place a lumber storage next to it. If a lumber storage sits within five metres of the saw end, planks are deposited straight into it; the storage page puts the figure at three metres of the receiving end, so keep it close rather than trusting either number to the metre. Lumber storage holds 48 slots, takes only logs and planks, and unlocks at Woodcutting 67.
You can feed several sawmills into one storage by placing their sawing ends within about two metres of it.

Oak planks are the trap. They are heavier than either alternative at 2.0 each, stack to only 50, and the wiki states outright that they have no construction uses at the moment. Milling oak logs into oak planks is, for now, converting a useful log into a heavy shelf ornament.
Ash planks have a second job worth knowing about: they can be burned for charcoal as an alternative to logs — and that is where the milling step pays for itself.
The Charcoal Doubling
The single most valuable fact about the sawmill is not on the sawmill's page. It is on the charcoal page:
Twice as much charcoal can be produced if first milling logs into planks.
The arithmetic is exactly what it sounds like. One log burns into one charcoal. That same log milled first becomes two planks, and those two planks burn into two charcoal — double the fuel from the same tree, for one extra processing step you can run while asleep.
Charcoal is worth three minutes of fuel time each, so doubling the yield doubles how long your furnace runs per tree.
Two practical consequences:
- Never burn raw logs if a sawmill is standing. The mill step costs time, not material, and the mill runs unattended.
- Ash is the wood to mill for fuel. It is the freest of the five to gather and its plank explicitly doubles as charcoal feedstock.
One caveat before you mill everything. Willow and yew logs are super compost ingredients, and yew logs are also a blacksmith's bench material — so mill for fuel, but do not empty the log chest doing it.
