Item Stands in Valheim: Shift + E, and Everything You Can Finally Display

The most useful thing about Valheim's item stands is a keybind nobody tells you about: shift + E changes an item's rotation on the stand. Iron Gate mention it exactly once, in brackets, in a patch note — and it is the difference between a display wall that looks deliberate and one where every sword hangs the same way. The Call to Arms update then expanded what stands can hold and how items sit on them. Here is the full picture.
The Control You Are Missing
Iron Gate's parenthetical is the whole tip:
"(reminder:
shift + Eto change rotation on item stands)"
It is called a "reminder" but functions as the only documentation. Place an item on a stand, then use shift + E to cycle through its available orientations.
Not every item has multiple orientations — that is what Call to Arms changed. The update's own summary line reads: "Some items can now have multiple orientations on item stands."
Three items specifically gained a flat option: "Fragrant Bundle, Fresh Seaweed and Thistle can now be placed flat on horizontal item stands."
That distinction matters when you are decorating. A horizontal stand — a shelf-style placement — needs items that lie down rather than stand up, and until this change most things simply floated upright.
What You Can Now Display

Call to Arms added twelve items to the allowed list:
| Newly displayable |
|---|
| Barley Flour |
| Tankard |
| Ancient Seed |
| Dragon Tear |
| Volture Egg |
| Cores |
| Padded Helmet |
| Carapace Helmet |
| Fresh Seaweed |
| Fragrant Bundle |
| Thistle |
| Celestial Feather |
Cores got a second, related fix worth knowing: "Cores are no longer placed in hot bar when picked up, and are still able to be placed on item stands." If you found cores annoying to handle, that was a real problem and it is fixed.
Dragon Tear, Ancient Seed and Celestial Feather are the trophy-cabinet items here — boss and progression materials that people wanted on the wall rather than in a chest. Tankard and Barley Flour are the tavern-builder's additions.
The Orientation Overhaul

A much longer list gained new positions and orientations rather than new permission. Iron Gate grouped them:
Weapons and tools:
| Atgeirs | Axes | Bombs |
| Bows | Crossbows | Knives |
| Maces | Pickaxes | Shields |
| Sledges | Spears | Staffs |
| Swords | Tower Shields | Cultivator |
| Feaster | Fishing Rod | Hammer |
| Hoe | Scythe | Scythe handle |
Food and consumables: All Fish, All Meads, Cooked Lox Meat, Cooked Bonemaw Meat, Cooked Serpent Meat, Cooked Neck Tail, Cooked Boar Meat, Rotten Meat, Blueberries, Raspberry, Carrot.
Everything else: All Helmets, All Trophies, Asksvin Saddle, Lox Saddle, Goblin Totem.
"All Trophies" and "All Helmets" are the two entries that change a trophy hall, because they apply across the board rather than to a named list.
Two display bugs were fixed in the same era, both worth recognising if you saw them:
- Cooked Asksvin Tail and Roasted Crust Pie "no longer sparkle when attached to an item stand."
- The Asksvin trophy icon "now matches the colour of the actual trophy."
- The Bearskin Rug "no longer flickers."
Building Around a Display

The building pieces themselves got quieter improvements in the same period, all aimed at alignment:
| Change | Detail |
|---|---|
| Ashwood Stakewalls | Snap points tweaked for better alignment |
| Grausten wall 2×2 | Snap points tweaked for better alignment |
| Grausten arches | "Now allowed to be placed in different orientations in the same position" |
| Grausten Roof Corner | "No longer changes position when damaged" |
| Blackmarble floor triangle and tip | No longer burnable |
The Grausten arch change is the same idea as the item stand one — Iron Gate spent this period making things placeable the way you meant, rather than adding new pieces.
And there is more of that coming with 1.0: 67° roof pieces at 4 metres, in both thatch and darkwood, plus a drawbridge and furniture made from a new Deep North wood.
A practical layout note for a shared server. Display walls are one of the few things in Valheim that exist purely for other people to look at, which makes them worth building near where players actually walk — the hall entrance, the portal room — rather than in a back room. And with all trophies and all helmets now positionable, a trophy hall no longer has to accept whatever angle the game picks.
One warning that applies to any big display project right now. With 1.0 arriving 9 September, a new chunked world save system waiting on the Public Test Branch, and Iron Gate recommending "you start a new playthrough to get the best possible Valheim experience", this is not the month to begin a hundred-hour trophy hall in an old world without a manual backup.
Practical tips
shift + Echanges an item's rotation on a stand. This is the tip.- Fragrant Bundle, Fresh Seaweed and Thistle lie flat on horizontal stands.
- Twelve items became displayable, including Dragon Tear, Ancient Seed, Celestial Feather and the Tankard.
- Cores no longer jump into your hotbar when picked up.
- All Trophies and All Helmets gained new positions — good news for trophy halls.
- Grausten arches can be placed in different orientations in the same position.
- Ashwood Stakewall and Grausten 2×2 snap points were improved.
- Take a manual backup before starting a big build ahead of 1.0.
Running your own Valheim server
A display hall is built for an audience, and an audience needs a world that is up when they are — not one that exists only while the person who built it is online. A gamever Valheim server keeps your hall, your trophies and your world available around the clock for up to 10 players, takes one-click backups before updates like the coming 1.0, and applies them so client and server versions never drift apart.
Conclusion
Item stands got a quiet but substantial pass. The control worth knowing is shift + E to change an item's rotation, mentioned by Iron Gate only as a parenthetical reminder, and it became far more useful once "some items can now have multiple orientations on item stands." Twelve items joined the allowed list — Barley Flour, Tankard, Ancient Seed, Dragon Tear, Volture Egg, Cores, Padded Helmet, Carapace Helmet, Fresh Seaweed, Fragrant Bundle, Thistle and Celestial Feather — while a much longer list, including all weapon classes, all fish, all meads, all helmets and all trophies, gained new positions and orientations. Fragrant Bundle, Fresh Seaweed and Thistle now lie flat on horizontal stands, and Cores no longer jump into your hotbar when picked up. Alongside, the building pieces themselves were tightened — improved snap points on Ashwood Stakewalls and the Grausten 2×2 wall, and Grausten arches placeable in different orientations in the same position.
