Item Rot in Palworld 1.0: Why Your Food Vanishes, and the Two Boxes That Stop It

Food in Palworld does not just degrade — it rots with time and then vanishes entirely when it spoils. There is no warning stack of ruined meat to clear out; the item is simply gone. The game gives you exactly two answers, both of them cold storage, and both of them require something most players do not realise: an Ice Pal assigned to work the box.
What Item Rot Actually Does

The mechanic is short: certain items, food chiefly, will rot with time and eventually vanish when they spoil. Storing them in a cooler or refrigerator prevents this.
Two consequences follow that are worth internalising early:
- A full food chest is not a food reserve. If your Pals are not eating it fast enough, it is a timer. Bulk-cooking a hundred meals into an ordinary wooden chest produces less usable food than cooking fifty into a Cooler Box.
- Nothing on the server side changes the rate. Palworld's server configuration exposes ninety-odd settings covering drop rates, durability, decay of buildings, breeding time and hunger — but no setting adjusts food spoilage. Cold storage is the only lever, in single-player and on a dedicated server alike.
The Cooler Box
The early answer, and it arrives early enough to matter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Technology level | 13 |
| Materials | Ingot 10, Stone 10, Ice Organ 2 |
| Slots | 10 |
| Required suitability | Cooling Lv.1 |
| Worker maximum | 1 |
| HP | 2,000 |
| Defense | 2 |
| Build work | 50 |
Ten slots is small, and the Ice Organ requirement means you need to have killed or farmed an Ice Pal before you can build one. Both are fine — the Cooler Box is not meant to be your food warehouse, it is meant to be the box your cooked meals go into instead of the chest next to the campfire. It is also paintable, which is a genuine convenience when you have several storage types in one room and want the cold one obvious at a glance.
The Refrigerator

The late answer:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Technology level | 38 |
| Materials | Refined Ingot 50, Polymer 20, Cryogenic Coolant 10, Circuit Board 5 |
| Slots | 25 |
| Required suitability | Cooling Lv.1 |
| Worker maximum | 1 |
| HP | 5,000 |
| Defense | 3 |
| Build work | 500 |
The Refrigerator carries 2.5x the slots of a Cooler Box for 10x the build work and a materials list that needs Polymer, Circuit Boards and Cryogenic Coolant — comfortably a mid-to-late-game project. It has one restriction the Cooler Box does not: it is flagged install-only near the hub, meaning it must be placed within your base's Palbox radius. A Cooler Box can go anywhere; a Refrigerator cannot go in a remote outpost that has no Palbox.
That single flag decides the correct layout. Cooler Boxes for outposts and satellite camps. Refrigerators for the main base. Trying to do it the other way round simply will not place.
The Ice Pal Requirement

This is the part that catches people, and both boxes share it. Each one requires Cooling Lv.1 and accepts a maximum of one worker. The in-game description says it plainly for both: assign an Ice Pal to help prevent food stored inside from spoiling.
Practical consequences:
- One Pal per box. Worker maximum is 1 on both, so five Cooler Boxes want five Cooling-capable Pals if you want all five working. In practice your base's Pals rotate, but the cap is real.
- Cooling Lv.1 is the whole requirement. Neither box asks for a higher suitability level, so a common early Ice Pal is as good as a rare one for this specific job. Save the good Cooling Pals for anything that scales.
- A cold box with nobody working it is just a chest. If food is still vanishing out of your Refrigerator, check that a Pal is actually assigned before you check anything else.
Both boxes also carry a deterioration damage value — 0.08 on the Cooler Box, 0.1 on the Refrigerator — meaning they decay over time like any other structure and need repairing. On a server, that rate is governed by BuildObjectDeteriorationDamageRate.
Running your own Palworld 1.0 server
Food rots on real-world time, which means it rots while nobody is logged in — a problem that only exists on a world that keeps running. A gamever Palworld server gives you that persistent world with full crossplay, automatic updates and one-click backups.
Conclusion
Food in Palworld rots over time and disappears completely when it spoils, and no server setting changes the rate — cold storage is the only answer that exists. The Cooler Box unlocks at Technology 13 for Ingot 10, Stone 10 and Ice Organ 2, holds 10 slots, and can be placed anywhere. The Refrigerator unlocks at Technology 38 for Refined Ingot 50, Polymer 20, Cryogenic Coolant 10 and Circuit Board 5, holds 25 slots, and is install-only near the Palbox, which means outposts get Cooler Boxes and the main base gets Refrigerators. Both require Cooling Lv.1 and cap at one worker each, so an unstaffed box preserves nothing and five boxes want five Ice Pals; since neither asks for more than Lv.1, a common Ice Pal does the job as well as a rare one. Both also decay like any structure, at 0.08 and 0.1 deterioration respectively, under BuildObjectDeteriorationDamageRate.
