How to Tame a Megalodon in ARK

A Megalodon being knocked out for taming in shallow water in ARK

The Megalodon is ARK's common deep-water apex shark, and taming one is a knockout (KO) job in shallow water, not a passive feed. This guide walks through what ark.wiki.gg's Megalodon page documents: how the torpor-knockout method works, which kibble and food it prefers, how many of each food a Level 1 Megalodon needs (and how long that takes), and the stats, saddle level, and breeding timers you get once it's tamed. Every number below comes from that page; where it doesn't give a figure, this guide says so instead of guessing.

The Knockout (KO) Taming Method

The infobox lists the Megalodon's Taming Method as Knockout: you drop its Torpidity to zero with tranquilizers, then load food into its inventory while it's unconscious. The infobox also confirms Group Fish, Species Carcharodon ultramegalodon, Diet Carnivore, Temperament Aggressive, and Rideable Swimming.

The wiki's behavior note explains why it's risky to approach: "Megalodons will stay in the deeper waters unless attacking prey, but even then they rarely enter shallow areas. They are aggressive and can swim faster than most creatures, including the player. They also aggro on a player from a very long distance."

The taming-strategy section gives the core method directly: "the best method is to tranquilize one or a few Megalodons which are enticed into shallow waters by swimming... with 10-30 Tranq arrows." Underwater, a crossbow helps, "as it can be fired underwater, unlike the bow." Chumming works too: "killing a smaller fish and holding it in your hand while on the beach... will attract any Megalodons in the area to it."

Preferred Food, Kibble, and Superior Kibble Ingredients

The Domestication data lists two "Preferred Kibble" entries — Superior Kibble and Kibble (Spino Egg) — neither marked higher priority, so this guide reports both. Preferred Food (non-kibble) is Raw Mutton and Raw Prime Meat. Superior Kibble is crafted from: 2x Citronal, 1x Prime Meat Jerky, 1x Large Egg, 5x Fiber, 2x Rare Mushroom, 1x Sap, and 1x Water.

The Level 1 taming table lists eleven usable foods in this order, each with the quantity needed to fully tame it: Superior Kibble (2), Raw Mutton (3), Cooked Lamb Chop (6), Raw Prime Meat (4), Cooked Prime Meat (7), Raw Prime Fish Meat (9), Raw Meat (11), Cooked Prime Fish Meat (18), Cooked Meat (21), Raw Fish Meat (27), and Cooked Fish Meat (53).

Level 1 Taming Quantities and Torpidity

Table of Level 1 Megalodon taming quantities and time per food in ARK

The same table also gives the time each food takes to finish taming a Level 1 Megalodon once it's fed while unconscious: Superior Kibble 0:04:48, Raw Mutton 0:06:46, Raw Prime Meat 0:09:01, and Raw Fish Meat — the slowest listed — 0:30:23.

The table also lists a "KO" line under each food option, showing six numbers for Level 1: ×80, ×33, ×9, ×6, ×4, and ×2. The extracted text doesn't carry the weapon/ammo icon labeling each column, so this guide can't say which number is a Bow, Crossbow, or dart gun — treat these as real but undocumented as to which weapon each belongs to.

The page confirms Torpidity-depletion for a Level 1 Megalodon runs at 0.3/second, with "Time until all torpidity is depleted" listed as 00:44:26 — under 45 minutes before it wakes if you stop feeding it. The same table exists for Levels 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150, and quantities scale up sharply: Superior Kibble climbs from 2 at Level 1 to 11 at Level 150 (11 ÷ 2 = 5.5×). This guide only pulled Level 1 in full, so anything past Level 1 beyond that comparison is undocumented here.

Base Stats, Saddle Level, Breeding Timers, and Habitat

Table of Megalodon base stats, saddle level, and breeding timers in ARK

The Base Stats and Growth table gives these Level 1 values and their per-level wild increase: Health 600 (+120), Stamina 320 (+32), Weight 250 (+5), Melee Damage 40 (+2), and Torpidity 800 (+48). Torpidity decides how hard a wild Megalodon is to knock out — at Level 30, that's 800 + 48 × 29 = 800 + 1,392 = 2,192 Torpidity, nearly three times the Level 1 total. The table's taming-bonus percentage columns exist on the page but aren't cleanly separable into additive vs. multiplicative figures here, so this guide doesn't restate them as precise numbers.

    Once tamed, a Megalodon needs the Megalodon Saddle, unlocked at Level 47; a Megalodon Tek Saddle is also listed. Breeding timers from the Reproduction data: Gestation 6h 6m 18s, Baby stage 7h 7m 21s, Juvenile stage 1d 4h 29m, Adolescent stage 1d 11h 37m, for a Total Maturation Time of 2d 23h 13m 30s — that's 2 × 24 + 23 = 71 hours, so roughly 71h 13m start to finish. Breeding Interval is listed as 18h – 2d.

The infobox lists Habitat simply as "Map," and the page names spawns across The Island, The Center, Ragnarok, Valguero, Crystal Isles, Genesis: Part 2, Lost Island, Fjordur, Midgard, and Genesis: Part 1, plus the X-Megalodon variant on Genesis: Part 1. The page's color-coded rarity legend per map didn't survive plain-text extraction, so this guide can't give rarity per map — only that it spans that list.

Build your trap from stone, not wood. The Data section lists Thatch, Greenhouse, and Wood as materials a Megalodon "Can Damage," so a shallow-water pen made from either gets chewed through mid-tame. Fight from a raft, rock, or platform, bring a crossbow underwater since "the bow cannot be fired underwater, but can be fired into water for at least a short distance," and — in the wiki's own words — "always bring extra supplies." Also worth knowing: "Megalodon do not produce Feces," and "Megalodon cannot be tracked by Transponder Node's."

Running your own ARK server

Taming a Megalodon means holding a trap in open water long enough to lure, tranq, and feed it — not something you want interrupted by a shared server wipe or another tribe draining your narcotic stockpile. A private ARK server keeps your trap standing, your Superior Kibble stocked, and your newly-tamed shark right where you left it, with the map and difficulty settings you actually want. Coordinate a taming run with your tribe on your own schedule, and it stays that way overnight.

Conclusion

Taming a Megalodon in ARK comes down to what the wiki actually documents: knock it out in shallow water with Tranq Arrows or a crossbow, or lure it in with chumming; feed it Superior Kibble or Raw Mutton once it's under; expect roughly 0:04:48 per Superior Kibble at Level 1 against a 0.3/s Torpidity-depletion clock; and have the Megalodon Saddle ready by Level 47. Anything past Level 1's food quantities, the exact weapon behind each "KO" number, and the taming-bonus percentage breakdown aren't in the extracted source and aren't guessed here.
