How to Tame a Doedicurus in ARK

A Doedicurus curled into its armored shell while being tamed in ARK

The Doedicurus — "Doed" for short — is a knockout tame, and ark.wiki.gg's own infobox says so plainly: Taming Method Knockout, Torpor Immune No. What makes it trickier than most herbivore knockouts is its defensive roll-up, which shrugs off a large share of incoming damage and torpor once triggered. This guide covers what the wiki documents: the roll-up mechanic and mount-based KO strategies, the food ranking for the feeding phase, the Level 1–150 kibble-and-time table, and the saddle level, base stats, and drops you get once it's tamed. Anywhere the source page doesn't give a figure, this guide says so instead of guessing.

The Knockout (KO) Taming Method

The wiki is blunt about why Doedicurus is awkward to knock out: "Due to their high torpor stat, Doedicurus are hard to knock out and can withstand a large number of Tranquilizer Arrows. They take 90% reduced torpor and damage when they are curled up in their protective shell and not moving." The roll-up triggers once it "loses Health under around ~33%" — the Behavior section frames the same threshold the other way, saying it "will only roll into a protected shell once it has lost 2/3 of its health," which is the same point (a third remaining = two-thirds lost).

The wiki's recommended fix is weapon choice: a Longneck Rifle with Tranquilizer Darts "will knock it down with little risk of the Doedicurus curling up, making for an easy tame." Without one, the primitive strategy is to back-pedal while firing arrows at the head, and if it curls up anyway, "stop firing and wait for it to uncurl... Just wait for the uncurl and repeat" — shooting a curled Doed wastes ammo it's mostly immune to.

Three mount-based KO strategies are documented. A Pachy's charge "deals 3.5x more Torpor than it deals damage, and applies it instantly: no waiting required," so it reliably knocks a Doed out without risking a kill. An Equus kick "deals an instant 3x more Torpor than it deals Health damage" — slightly more likely to trigger a curl-up than the Pachy's charge, but it can't be interrupted. A high-level Beelzebufo can lick indefinitely and jump the Doed's tail swing; since "the poison effect only stacks twice," the wiki advises licking "once every 10 seconds or so" instead of spamming it.

Best Food for Taming a Doedicurus

Ranked list of the best taming food for a Doedicurus in ARK

The wiki names Regular Kibble as the Preferred Kibble, crafted from 1× Cooked Meat Jerky, 1× Medium Egg, 5× Fiber, 2× Longrass, 2× Savoroot, and 1× Water. Failing that, Doedicurus "prefer any of the Crops (Citronal, Savoroot, Longrass, and Rockarrot) over berries when being tamed. These crops are all equally preferred, so any one will do." Lacking crops, "the creature prefers Mejoberries over other berries." The page's own reasoning for skipping the bottom of that list: "Doedicurus take a very long amount of time to tame with Mejo or normal Berries, so try to invest in Regular kibble if possible" — a direct quote, not this guide's own judgment call.

Taming Times and Torpidity by Level

Table of Doedicurus taming times and torpidity depletion by level

    The wiki's Regular Kibble table gives, per level (kibble / taming time / torpidity-depletion rate / time to fully deplete): Level 1 — 3, 4:48, 0.75/s, 17:46. Level 30 — 6, 9:36, 1.25/s, 29:19. Level 60 — 9, 14:24, 1.63/s, 37:14. Level 90 — 11, 17:35, 1.97/s, 42:58. Level 120 — 14, 22:23, 2.29/s, 47:29. Level 150 — 17, 27:11, 2.59/s, 51:12.

    Arithmetic: taming time grows from 4.8 min (4:48) at Level 1 to ~27.18 min (27:11) at Level 150 — 27.18 ÷ 4.8 ≈ 5.7x longer. Kibble needed grows from 3 to 17, or 17 ÷ 3 ≈ 5.7x more, tracking time almost exactly. Torpidity-depletion speed rises only from 0.75/s to 2.59/s, a 3.45x increase (2.59 ÷ 0.75) — slower than the feeding-time growth.

The page also lists six per-level KO shot-count figures (e.g. "× 80; × 33; × 9; × 6; × 4; × 2" at Level 1), but which weapon each column is for wasn't preserved in the captured text — left undocumented rather than guessed. No Doedicurus-specific trap advice was found on this page either.

Saddle Level, Base Stats, and Where to Find One

Table of Doedicurus saddle level, base stats, and drops

The Doedicurus Saddle unlocks at Level 34. Base (Level 1, wild) stats: Health 850 (+170/level), Stamina 300 (+30), Oxygen 150 (+15), Food 3000 (+300), Weight 250 (+5), Melee Damage 32/16 (+1.6/+0.8), Movement Speed 100% (+2%), Torpidity 800 (+48). Killing one yields 28 XP; a separate infobox field also lists a base experience of 7, and the page doesn't explain how the two relate, so both are reported rather than picking one. Drag Weight is 160, Feces Size Medium, and it is not radiation immune.

Its signature utility is stone hauling: it "reduces the weight of the following resources by the listed amount while they are in its inventory: Stone — 75%." A wild kill drops Hide, Keratin, and Raw Meat. It was "first added in ARK: Survival Evolved on the 25th of August, 2015," version 202.0. The habitat list names it present on The Island, The Center, Scorched Earth, Ragnarok, Extinction, Valguero, Genesis: Part 1, Crystal Isles, Genesis: Part 2, Lost Island, Fjordur, and its Aberrant variant on Aberration — the page's per-map rarity coding (common/rare/cave-only) didn't survive text extraction here, so this guide can't say which map has it as common versus rare.

Bring a Longneck Rifle and Tranquilizer Darts if you have one — the wiki calls it the low-risk way to avoid triggering the roll-up. If it curls anyway, stop shooting and wait; a curled Doed takes 90% reduced torpor, so extra shots are wasted. Gather Citronal, Savoroot, Longrass, or Rockarrot — or craft Regular Kibble — beforehand; going in with only Mejoberries or Berries is documented as a very long tame. Budget more time and food the higher the level: a Level 150 needs roughly 5.7x the kibble and time of a Level 1.

Running your own ARK server

Doedicurus is valuable specifically because of that 75% Stone weight reduction, and getting real use out of one — running quarry routes, stockpiling kibble ingredients, keeping a tribe's stone reserves topped up — takes an always-on world, not a session that resets when a host logs off. A private ARK server keeps your tamed Doed, its saddle, and your crop plots exactly where you left them, with no risk of losing a half-finished KO to random-server griefing. It also means a multi-person tame using the Pachy, Equus, or Beelzebufo strategies above can happen on your tribe's own schedule.

Conclusion

Taming a Doedicurus comes down to what the wiki documents directly: it's a knockout tame that rolls into an armored shell once it drops to roughly a third health, best approached with a Longneck Rifle and Tranq Darts (or a Pachy, Equus, or Beelzebufo) to limit curl-ups, fed with Regular Kibble or the four preferred Crops rather than berries, needing roughly 5.7x more kibble and time at Level 150 than Level 1, and rideable with a saddle unlocked at Level 34. The weapon-specific shot counts, per-map spawn rarity, and the relationship between the page's two separate XP figures aren't in the source and aren't guessed here.
