How to Get Coal in Satisfactory

Where to Find Coal Deposits

Coal deposits are scattered around the world and are often near water sources. However, some are also found in the Grass Fields and Dune Desert. Be cautious in the Dune Desert, as coal nodes there can overlap with other resources, which might reduce the effective number of nodes available.

Here’s a fun and quirky way to get some additional coal: tame Lizard Doggos! These adorable critters occasionally bring coal as a gift. It’s a bit of a gamble and not as reliable as mining, but it’s a cool bonus if you’re into taming the local fauna.

Harvesting Coal by Hand

The simplest way to get coal is by harvesting it manually. As you explore the game world, you'll come across jet-black coal deposits scattered across the map. Just walk up to one of these deposits and press E to mine it. It’s a straightforward process, but keep in mind that this method will only yield small amounts of coal and can be a bit tedious if you need large quantities.

Automated Extraction

For a more efficient approach, set up miners on inexhaustible resource nodes. These nodes can be found throughout the map and come in different purities—impure, normal, and pure. Here’s the lowdown:

Set up a Portable Miner or Miner MK1 for coal extraction in Satisfactory

     - Impure Nodes: Extract 30 coal per minute with a Miner Mk.1, 60 with a Mk.2, and 120 with a Mk.3.

     - Normal Nodes: Extract 60 coal per minute with a Miner Mk.1, 120 with a Mk.2, and 240 with a Mk.3.

     - Pure Nodes: Extract 120 coal per minute with a Miner Mk.1, 240 with a Mk.2, and 480 with a Mk.3.

Upgrade to a Miner Mk.2 for faster coal mining in Satisfactory

With a Miner Mk.3 running at 250% clock speed, you can extract up to 1,800 coal per minute from impure nodes, 17,400 from normal nodes, and up to 10,920 or even 16,800 from pure nodes, depending on their location. Just remember, the maximum amount you can transport might be limited by your conveyor belts, so plan accordingly!

Crafting and Usage

     Coal isn’t just for burning.

     - Biocoal: Convert 5 biomass into biocoal using a Constructor. This is a good alternative for generating power with fewer resources.

     - Charcoal: Produced from 1 wood and 10 coal in a Constructor, this is useful for specific recipes.

     - Black Powder: Made from 1 coal and 1 sulfur in an Assembler, essential for creating explosives and other items.

     - Compacted Coal: Crafted from 5 coal and 5 sulfur, this dense form of coal is handy for high-energy needs.

     - Steel Ingot: Combine 3 iron ore and 3 coal in a Foundry to produce steel ingots, a staple for advanced machinery.
