How to get and use Mounted Ballista in Rust Primitive Update

Rust has always been a brutal survival game, but the Primitive Update takes the experience to a whole new level, stripping away modern weaponry and forcing players to rely on siege warfare. Among the new weapons introduced, the Mounted Ballista stands as a fearsome tool of destruction. This mobile war machine can launch massive bolts at enemies and structures, offering both offensive and defensive advantages.

How to Obtain the Mounted Ballista

Unlike basic weapons that can be crafted from the start, the Mounted Ballista requires a bit more effort. You’ll need to unlock it through the Workbench Level 2 tech tree, which means gathering enough scrap and resources to progress. The crafting process itself is straightforward, but the materials needed aren’t exactly cheap. Once you have access to the blueprint, it’s just a matter of collecting everything required and finding a safe place to build it.

For those who prefer to skip the crafting process, high-tier loot crates occasionally contain a Mounted Ballista. These crates are rare and often found in high-risk areas, so securing one this way is a gamble. Another, more daring method is simply taking one from another player. If someone has carelessly left their Ballista unguarded, you can push it away or tow it with a horse, assuming they don’t notice in time to stop you.

Crafting and Assembling the Mounted Ballista

Once you have the blueprint unlocked, you’ll need to gather the following materials:

     - 250 Metal Fragments

     - 2 Gears

     - 2 Sheet Metal

     - 750 Wood (for setup)

Choose elevated terrain for greater firing range and accuracy

With everything ready, you can craft the Mounted Ballista and deploy it onto level terrain. Unlike the stationary version, this one cannot be placed on roofs or foundations, as it’s designed for mobility. Position it carefully, ensuring you have a good vantage point or enough space to move it around as needed.

After placing the Ballista, you’ll need a Hammer to complete the assembly. Striking it ten times will finalize the construction, bringing the siege weapon to life. Once built, it’s ready for action - provided you have the right ammunition and a solid strategy in mind.

Movement and Positioning

One of the biggest advantages of the Mounted Ballista is its ability to move. Unlike its fixed counterpart, this version can be repositioned to adapt to changing battle conditions. Pushing it manually works in short distances, but for long-range movement, a horse is the best option.

Move the Ballista manually or tow it with a horse for better positioning

To push it by hand, simply approach the Ballista, look at the side, and press E. While this works in tight spaces, it’s not the fastest way to relocate. For greater mobility, you can hitch it to a horse by backing the animal up to the front center section of the Ballista. Once the Towing prompt appears, press E to attach it. Repeating the action unhitches it when you’re in the desired location.

Moving the Ballista strategically is key to using it effectively. Setting it up on elevated terrain gives you a better angle for long-distance shots, while hiding it behind cover can protect it from enemy fire. The ability to tow it also allows you to use hit-and-run tactics, repositioning quickly before enemies can retaliate.

Aiming and Firing the Mounted Ballista

Once in position, operating the Ballista is a simple but powerful process. Press E to mount it, then use W, A, S, D or your mouse to adjust the aim. The Ballista fires in an arc, so accounting for distance and gravity is important. Unlike guns, you can’t simply point and shoot - each shot needs to be carefully planned.

Adjust your aim carefully to compensate for gravity and distance.

Before firing, hold R to tension the release cord and select the type of bolt to load. Choosing the right bolt for the situation is essential, as different types serve different purposes. Once ready, press Left Mouse Button to launch the bolt. The impact can be devastating, especially if you’ve chosen the right ammunition for the job.

Choosing the Right Bolt for the Job

The Mounted Ballista can fire several types of specialized bolts, each designed for a different role in combat.

Load the right bolt for the situation—fire, armor-piercing, or high damage

The Hammerhead Bolt is the ideal choice for breaking through enemy defenses. With enough shots, it can tear down doors and weaken stone walls, making it a must-have for sieging bases. For those looking to set structures ablaze, the Incendiary Bolt is a great alternative, igniting targets on impact and spreading fire over time.

Against armored vehicles and siege weapons, the Piercer Bolt is the best option, capable of punching through thick defenses and dealing heavy damage. If your goal is to disrupt enemy movement and cause chaos, the Pitchfork Bolt is a brutal anti-personnel choice, inflicting significant area damage and forcing enemies to scatter.

Strategies for Using the Mounted Ballista

The Mounted Ballista is a versatile weapon that excels in multiple combat scenarios. In base defense, it provides long-range firepower that can strike incoming raiders before they reach your walls. Unlike turrets, it doesn’t require electricity, making it a great option for primitive bases that lack high-tech resources.

Fire Incendiary Bolts to set enemy structures ablaze

During raids, the Ballista serves as both a support and an offensive weapon. Breaking through walls and doors is much easier when you have a Ballista hammering away at enemy structures. It also forces defenders to take cover, creating opportunities for your team to advance.

For mobile warfare, the ability to tow the Ballista with a horse allows players to reposition quickly, setting up devastating ambushes or escaping dangerous situations. By relocating between shots, you can stay ahead of your enemies and control the flow of battle.

Maintaining and Repairing Your Mounted Ballista

Like all siege weapons, the Ballista requires upkeep to stay functional. If it takes damage, you’ll need a Hammer and Metal Fragments to repair it. Each repair swing restores up to 51 health, allowing you to keep it operational even during extended battles.

Leaving the Ballista exposed to the elements will cause it to decay over time. With 300 health, it slowly deteriorates over 600 minutes if left unprotected. Covering it or keeping it inside a walled-off area may slow the decay process, though this is still being tested.

Mastering its movement, aiming mechanics, and bolt selection will turn any player into a formidable warlord on the battlefield. If you want to dominate the new primitive landscape, there’s no better tool than a Mounted Ballista at your side.
