How to get and use Battering Ram in Rust Primitive Update
Rust’s Primitive Update has taken away modern explosives, automatic rifles, and all the high-tech comforts that made raiding a swift and brutal affair. Now, if you want to get into a well-defended base, you’ll need something much more old-school - the Battering Ram. This fuel-powered, heavily reinforced siege vehicle is designed to tear down doors, smash through walls, and strike fear into anyone hiding behind their defenses. But unlike C4 or satchels, the Battering Ram requires skill, teamwork, and patience. It’s not just about ramming into a base; it’s about strategy, positioning, and making sure you don’t get wiped out before the job is done.

How to Obtain the Battering Ram
The easiest way to get a Battering Ram is to craft one using the Workbench Level 2 tech tree. This means you’ll need to invest some scrap and research the necessary components before unlocking the blueprint. Once unlocked, crafting a Battering Ram requires a good amount of resources, so be prepared to farm or trade for materials.

For the more adventurous players, you might be lucky enough to find a Battering Ram in high-tier loot crates scattered around the map. However, this is rare, and relying on luck isn't a great strategy when planning a siege.
And then, of course, there's the five-finger discount method. If another player has left their Battering Ram unattended, you can simply hop in, refuel it, and drive off. Just be careful - stealing a siege weapon in Rust tends to make enemies fast.

Assembling the Battering Ram
Once you’ve acquired a Battering Ram, it won’t be ready to use right away. You’ll need to place and assemble it before it becomes operational.
To build a Battering Ram, you’ll need:
- 1000 Wood
- 500 Metal Fragments
- A Hammer

Operating the Battering Ram
The Battering Ram is a heavy, fuel-powered vehicle that moves similarly to Rust’s Scrap Transport Helicopter - except on wheels. Controlling it takes some practice, and maneuvering through rocky terrain or dense forests can be a challenge.

To drive the Battering Ram, enter the cockpit and press W to start moving forward, A and D to steer, and S to reverse. Unlike smaller vehicles, this siege weapon doesn’t handle sharp turns well, so plan your movements in advance.
The real power of the Battering Ram lies in its ability to smash through enemy structures. This is done by looking toward the indicator panel inside the cockpit and pressing E when the light turns green. Each impact deals damage to both the structure and the Battering Ram’s reinforced head, so repairs will be necessary after multiple hits.

Using the Battering Ram for Raiding
Unlike explosives, the Battering Ram requires a much more hands-on approach to raiding. Getting through a High External Stone Wall, for example, takes around ten direct hits, with each swing dealing roughly 50 damage. If used correctly, this siege weapon can break into heavily defended bases, but it’s not a one-man job.
While the driver focuses on positioning and hitting targets, other team members should handle repairs and security. A well-coordinated team can keep the Battering Ram operational by using a Hammer and High-Quality Metal to repair the battering head. Without repairs, the battering mechanism will break, rendering the vehicle useless until fixed.

Another key tactic is using the deployable gate at the rear of the vehicle. This gate can be opened to let teammates rush into a breached base without exposing them to gunfire. Having players stationed inside the Ram also allows them to fire through small windows in the sidewalls, providing cover while breaking into a base.
Defensive Strategies Against Battering Rams
For base owners, defending against a Battering Ram can be tricky. Since explosive weapons are disabled in Primitive Mode, stopping one requires a different approach.
One of the best defensive tactics is building on elevated terrain. Battering Rams struggle to navigate steep hills and uneven surfaces, making it difficult for attackers to reach your base. Narrow chokepoints, spike traps, and reinforced gatehouses also help slow down an incoming siege.
If the enemy does manage to get the Ram to your walls, focus on eliminating the driver and repair crew. Without someone operating it, the Ram is just a stationary target. Firebombs and scattershot projectiles from a Catapult can also deal significant damage to the vehicle and any players inside.
Repair and Maintenance
The Battering Ram is not indestructible, and keeping it in good shape requires constant maintenance.
- Body Repairs: The main structure of the Battering Ram can be repaired with Wood, Metal Fragments, and Cloth. Using a Hammer, each repair swing restores up to 53 health.
- Battering Head Repairs: The battering mechanism takes damage with each impact. To repair it, use High-Quality Metal and a Hammer. Each repair restores 20 health.
- Decay Prevention: If left outside for too long, the Battering Ram will slowly decay over time. It has a total of 1000 health and deteriorates over 600 minutes. Storing it in a covered area may help slow decay.
Unlike explosives, it requires teamwork, positioning, and constant maintenance to be effective. With proper coordination, patience, and a bit of brute force, this siege weapon can turn any primitive warrior into a true raiding legend.
