How to Catch Mimog in Palworld (The Pal That Opens Chests Without Keys)

A Palworld treasure chest in a dungeon.

Mimog is Palworld's mimic — a chest that turns out to be a Pal — and it is worth catching for two reasons that have nothing to do with combat. Its partner skill opens treasure chests without using a key, and from level 20 upward it drops a Training Manual (XL) at 100%, which is 100,000 EXP per kill. It is also, by its own AI profile, a Pal that runs away the moment you engage it.

The internal tribe name is MimicDog, which is the clearest statement of what it is: a mimic that copies a treasure chest and waits. Its AIResponse is set to Escape, so it does not stand and fight — it bolts. That single flag decides how you have to approach it.

Defense130830 – 1,064

Work Speed100

The shape here is unusual: Defense 130 against Attack 60. Mimog is more than twice as good at not dying as it is at killing, which fits a Pal whose entire strategy is to look like furniture and then leave. Its food consumption is 3, its viewing distance 25 and its viewing angle 90 degrees — a narrow cone, which is exploitable.

Work Suitability and the Partner Skill

Card describing Mimog's Master of Unlocking partner skill.

Mimog carries Gathering Lv.1 and Transporting Lv.2, with Transport listed as its best suitability. Those are ordinary. The partner skill is not:

Master of Unlocking Lv.1 — While fighting together, Mimog can open treasure chests without using a key. Does not apply to chests that require a specific Work Suitability.

Read the exclusion carefully, because it is the whole limit of the skill. Key-locked chests open free. Chests that demand a Work Suitability — Lockpicking-style requirements — do not. For the ordinary Copper Key and Silver Key chests that fill dungeons and enemy camps, keeping Mimog in your party removes the key entirely from your loop, which means the key slots in every dungeon loot table become dead weight you can ignore rather than budget for.

How to Catch One

The Escape AI response is the problem, and everything else follows from it:

  • Open at range, not in melee. Mimog will begin fleeing on the first hit. A ranged opener leaves you with the distance you need to keep hitting.
  • Bring a slow or a stun. Ice and Ground status effects are the practical answers to a fleeing Pal; anything that stops movement converts a chase into a normal catch.
  • Respect the 0.8 capture correction. Mimog's capture rate is multiplied by 0.8, so it is 20% harder to catch than a Pal with no correction at the same health and sphere tier. Bring a sphere tier above what its level suggests.
  • Use the 90-degree viewing cone. Its detection arc is narrow and its viewing distance is 25. Approaching from behind gets you into range before it registers you at all.
  • Note the 80% male rate. If you want a breeding pair, expect to catch several before a female appears.

Mimog is also flagged Edible and can be taken with a Noose Trap, and it carries IgnoreCombi, meaning it is excluded from breeding combination results — you cannot breed toward Mimog from other species, only from Mimog pairs.

Why It Is Worth the Trouble

Card comparing Mimog's Training Manual XL drop rate by level.

Mimog is the practical source of Training Manual (XL) in Palworld, and the rate is a step function:

Mimog levelXL drop chance
Base20%
Lv.1030%
Lv.20 – Lv.80100%

Treasure Trove Mimog drops one at 100% at every level, base included. Each XL manual is 100,000 EXP applied to a Pal of your choice, so a level-20-plus Mimog is worth six figures of experience every time you find one. Its ExpRatio is 10, which is the multiplier on the experience you gain for defeating it — high for a Pal with 60 base health.

The combination is what makes it unusual: a Pal that funds your Pal levelling by dying and removes your key costs by living. There is a reasonable argument for keeping one in the party permanently and killing every other one you meet.

Running your own Palworld 1.0 server

Mimog hunting means sweeping dungeons and camps repeatedly, and chest-heavy content is far better split across a group in one shared world than run solo. A gamever Palworld server keeps that world persistent with full crossplay, automatic updates and one-click backups.

Conclusion

Mimog (#144) is a Neutral, XS, rarity-7 Pal with the tribe name MimicDog and an AI response of Escape — it flees rather than fights, so open at range and bring a slow. Its 0.8 capture rate correction makes it 20% harder to catch than its level implies, and at 80% male a breeding pair takes a few attempts. Its stat line is defensive — Defense 130 against Attack 60 — and at level 80 it reaches 830–1,064 Defense against 460–568 Attack. The reason to catch it is Master of Unlocking, which opens key-locked treasure chests for free while it is in your party, though not chests gated behind a Work Suitability. The reason to hunt the rest is Training Manual (XL): 20% at base, 30% at Lv.10, and 100% from Lv.20 upward, with Treasure Trove Mimog paying out at 100% regardless. That is 100,000 EXP per drop from a Pal with 60 base health.
