How to Beat the Megapithecus in ARK

The Megapithecus boss arena in ARK: Survival Ascended

The Megapithecus is one of ARK's game bosses, and the wiki is explicit that it's the easier of the Island's two main Guardians: it's described as "weaker than the Broodmother and Dragon," dealing "no special effects to the player and their tames unlike the other 2 Guardians," while still rewarding "far more than the Broodmother despite being weaker." This guide covers exactly what ark.wiki.gg documents: the portal, the tribute cost per difficulty, the arena and its minions, the tames the wiki recommends, and what the boss drops. Where the source page has no number, this guide says so instead of guessing.

How to Summon the Megapithecus

The Megapithecus lives in the Megapithecus Arena on The Island, The Center Arena, and the Forsaken Oasis on Valguero, all "accessible via the Obelisks and Supply Crates" on their respective maps. Place the required tribute items in a Supply Crate or Obelisk, then click "Generate Megapithecus Portal" (or the Center/Forsaken Oasis equivalent) to open a portal that teleports "nearby players and dinos" into the arena. On The Island in Single Player mode, the portal "can only be generated from the blue obelisk."

Fjordur is different: Megapithecus there "can only be summoned from the appropriate terminal," inside the Beiygjaheimr cave — entrance at 56.7/84.6, terminal at 49.1/82.3. A weaker variant also spawns as the last wave of the Gauntlet mission "Built Fjord Tough" on Fjordur, separate from the full fight. Exact arena coordinates on Island, Center, and Valguero aren't given, so this guide doesn't invent any.

Tribute Requirements by Difficulty

Table of Megapithecus tribute items required per difficulty tier

On any map except Fjordur, the tribute table lists, by Gamma / Beta / Alpha: Player Level 45 / 65 / 85; Artifact of the Brute, of the Devourer, and of the Pack — 1 / 1 / 1 each; then five apex drops Gamma skips entirely — Megalania Toxin, Megalodon Tooth, Spinosaurus Sail, Therizino Claws, Thylacoleo Hook-Claw — each at 5 for Beta, 10 for Alpha. The arithmetic: Beta needs 5 × 5 drop types = 25 apex-drop items total; Alpha needs 10 × 5 = 50 — exactly double Beta's, on top of the same three Artifacts both tiers require.

On Fjordur, the same list applies plus 1 Steinbjörn Relic at every difficulty, sourced from that map's own terminal rather than an Obelisk.

The Arena, Minions, and Combat Strategy

Recommended tames for the Megapithecus boss fight

Difficulty is color-coded — Gamma default, Beta yellow, Alpha red — and the Island arena is "a snow covered mountain temple," so the wiki recommends Fur Armor, Fria Curry, or high Fortitude against the cold. Minions spawn as Mesopithecus and Gigantopithecus; a dismounted player risks being blinded by a Mesopithecus. In The Center Arena and Forsaken Oasis, other bosses' minions share the space too.

The wiki states the Megapithecus "lacks an armor piercing attack with a large AOE," which is why it's rated the easiest Island boss despite fighting second. Two real hazards: a large insta-kill hole by the starting area (most tribes lure the boss to the starting teleport pad instead of chasing it), and an uncommon Boulder attack, "capable to one shot a mounted Survivor" but "easy to evade" from a distance — no exact damage number is given, so none is stated here.

Recommended tames, per the wiki: an army of Rexes for health and damage; Deinosuchus for "devastating Giga Bite attacks"; Therizinosaurus for high DPS, sustained with Sweet Vegetable Cakes; a Yutyrannus for its courage-roar buff; Daeodon for healing if you can micromanage it; Allosaurus packs with mate/alpha boosts; Deinonychus for pack-bonus stacking bleed; and Woolly Rhino, with the wiki suggesting "3-4 Woolly Rhinos with 20+ veggie cakes each, and 100% imprint," at the cost of "60+ armour saddles."

Base Stats and Rewards by Difficulty

Table of Megapithecus base stats and loot rewards by tier

Island base stats: Health 180,000 / 396,000 / 540,000 and Melee Damage 400 / 800 / 1,200 across Gamma / Beta / Alpha — the Weakness section confirms the low end directly: "even only having 180,000 on Gamma!" Alpha's health and melee damage are each exactly 3× Gamma's (540,000 ÷ 180,000 = 3; 1,200 ÷ 400 = 3). A kill awards 12,000 XP at any difficulty, Drag Weight is 1200, and it's Torpor Immune. By default the infobox lists it as not Tameable, Rideable, or Breedable, though the page separately notes exceptions where it's tamed and briefly ridden — the Genesis Part 2 "Survive the Ark" mission, and Survival of the Fittest.

    Guaranteed loot is Element, a Gorilla Flag, and a tier-matching Megapithecus Trophy, at a stated 100% Special Loot Chance. Element differs by version/map: ASA gives 48 / 132 / 264; ASE on Island, The Center, and Fjordur gives 40 / 110 / 220; ASE on Valguero gives 25 / 55 / 110. Alpha pays roughly 5.5× Gamma's Element on Island/Center/Fjordur (264 ÷ 48 = 5.5; 220 ÷ 40 = 5.5), and about 4.4× on Valguero (110 ÷ 25 = 4.4). One documented bug: "Gamma Megapithecus appears to be bugged dropping Gamma Manticore Trophy instead of Gamma Megapithecus Trophy."

Stay on the starting teleport pad and lure the Megapithecus to you rather than chasing it toward the insta-kill hole. Bring Fur Armor, Fria Curry, or high Fortitude for the cold, keep your distance to dodge the Boulder attack, and don't get caught dismounted near a Mesopithecus — it can blind you. In The Center Arena or Forsaken Oasis, watch the other bosses' minions too.

Running your own ARK server

Tribute farming for a Beta or Alpha run — 5 apiece for Beta, 10 apiece for Alpha, of five apex drops, plus Artifacts you may need to re-run dungeons for — takes real time, and losing that stockpile to a server wipe or a crowded public arena is a bad way to lose a boss attempt. A private ARK server keeps your tribute chest, your tamed Rex army, and your Artifacts exactly where your tribe left them, and lets you schedule the fight — including a Center or Valguero run where other bosses' minions matter — for whenever your whole group is online.

Conclusion

Beating the Megapithecus, per the wiki, comes down to three things: gather the tribute (3 Artifacts always, plus 5 or 10 apiece of five apex drops at Beta/Alpha), survive an arena whose real dangers are the insta-kill hole and cold rather than a devastating attack, and bring tanky, high-damage tames like Rexes, Deinosuchus, or Deinonychus. Stats and Element rewards scale roughly 3–5.5× from Gamma to Alpha depending on version and map. Anything the source page doesn't spell out — arena coordinates outside Fjordur, the Boulder attack's real damage number — is left undocumented here rather than guessed.
