How to Beat the Fuling Shaman in Valheim: Kill the 100-HP Shaman Before It Shields the Village

A Fuling Shaman in the Valheim Plains.

The Fuling Shaman is the softest target in any Plains village — just 100 health, and its only close-range option is a short staff jab. That is exactly why it is the most dangerous one to ignore: it does not fight so much as enable everyone else's fight, wrapping nearby Fulings in a damage-blocking shield while it pelts you with fire from a distance. Kill the Shaman first, and a village fight gets dramatically shorter. Leave it standing, and every other Fuling in the pack becomes harder to bring down than its health bar suggests.

Three Abilities, Three Different Jobs

Card listing the Shaman's Protect, Poke and Fireball abilities with cooldowns and ranges.

The wiki lists exactly three abilities, each doing something different:

AbilityEffectCooldownUsable range
ProtectShields allies for up to 100 Shield40sWithin 60m of a player
Poke100 Blunt, staff jab2sWithin 1.5m of a player
Fireball20 Blunt, 100 Fire, applies Burning3s0–20m of a player

Poke and Fireball are its only offense, and both are worth doing the arithmetic on. Poke lands 100 Blunt on a 2-second cooldown — 100 ÷ 2 = 50 damage per second if it connects every cycle. Fireball deals 20 Blunt plus 100 Fire, 120 total, on a 3-second cooldown — 120 ÷ 3 = 40 damage per second. Neither is trivial at close range, and the source describes the fireball projectile travelling "at 15 meters per second for up to 4 seconds before despawning" with a spread of 4–20 degrees — it is not a guaranteed hit, but it is not a slow lob either.

The Shield Is the Real Threat

Card explaining why the Protect shield keeps a Fuling group alive.

Protect is the ability that actually makes the Shaman worth prioritizing. Per the wiki, it "casts a protective barrier over all allies within a 6-meter radius, negating up to 100 damage before breaking or lasting for up to 40 seconds" — and its cooldown is also 40 seconds. That means the moment one shield expires, the Shaman can cast the next one, as long as it is still alive and within its 60-meter cast range of a player. Effectively that is near-continuous group shielding for as long as the fight lasts and the Shaman keeps breathing. Every Fuling standing near it is soaking up to 100 extra damage before your hits even start counting against their real health pool — which is the entire reason a village with a Shaman in it takes noticeably longer to clear than the enemy count alone would suggest.

Killing It: 100 HP and No Documented Star Variants

The Shaman itself is fragile once isolated. It carries Spirit immunity and nothing else on its resistance table — no listed weakness or resistance to Blunt, Slash, Pierce, Fire, Frost or Poison — so, as with the rest of the Fuling family, whatever weapon you are already using is the right one. Its stagger threshold is 30%, which on 100 health works out to 0.30 × 100 = 30 damage to stagger it outright — a very low bar, reachable with almost any single hit.

One hedge worth stating plainly: the infobox only lists a single health value, "100," with no 1★ or 2★ figures. Whether star-level Shamans exist with higher health is undocumented by this source — treat every Shaman you meet as the base 100 HP unless you personally observe otherwise.

On death it drops Black metal scrap and Bukeperries at what the drop table lists as guaranteed quantities of 1 each, plus Coins (20–39, 25% chance) and a Fuling shaman trophy (10% chance).

Where You'll Meet One

Card showing where and when Fuling Shamans spawn in the Plains.

Shamans are tied to the Plains faction and spawn as an "uncommon spawn point in Fuling Villages," per the wiki's spawn table, so you will find them stationed inside villages rather than wandering the open Plains. They can also appear during the "The horde is attacking" raid event, capped at a limit of 1 Shaman per that event. (The source's own spawn-table field for the event listing — a raw "frequency 6" value — isn't explained in plain language on the page; treat that figure as undocumented beyond the stated cap of one Shaman.)

Lore-wise, the wiki describes Shamans as "ritualistic, goblin-like beings that appear to possess their own tribalistic culture," implied through runestones and totems to worship Yagluth, "a long dead king." A page note adds that in ancient Norse societies, "shamanism was associated with Seiðr, a form of magic related to the telling and shaping of the future" — a fitting reference for the one Fuling that fights by empowering others rather than swinging a weapon.

Fast tips: Target the Shaman on sight — 30 damage staggers it, so a fast opener drops it before it reapplies Protect. Break its shield uptime by killing it before its 40-second Protect cooldown resets. Stay outside 1.5m when possible to deny the Poke jab, but expect Fireball threat out to 20m regardless. Grab the Bukeperries drop alongside the black metal scrap.

Running your own Valheim server

Clearing a Fuling village properly takes coordination — someone breaking the Shaman's shield loop while others hold the melee line — and that only works on a world that's still standing when your group logs back in. A gamever Valheim server keeps it persistent for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.

Conclusion

The Fuling Shaman is a 100-health support unit, not a brawler: its Poke (100 Blunt, 2s cooldown, 1.5m range) and Fireball (20 Blunt + 100 Fire, 3s cooldown, 0–20m range) work out to 50 and 40 damage per second respectively, but its real value to the enemy side is Protect — a 100-damage shield over allies in a 6-meter radius, lasting up to 40 seconds on a matching 40-second cooldown, castable from 60 meters away. That near-continuous shielding is why a Shaman-backed group survives longer than its health bars imply. The Shaman itself staggers at just 30 damage (30% of its 100 HP) and has no documented star variants, so isolating and killing it first — before it ever gets to reapply Protect — is the single highest-value action in any Fuling village fight.
