How to Beat a Jotun in Abiotic Factor

Jotun stat card showing HP, shield, and attack damage for Abiotic Factor

A Jotun — codenamed "The Bulwark" — is built to eat damage: 550 HP in each of its head, torso, arms, and legs, plus an 800 HP Hardlight shield that has to come down before any of that body health is even in play. Per the Abiotic Factor wiki, Jotuns are Gatekeeper enemies "found in Reactors, Shadowgate, and Residence Sector," and they're described as slow, heavy-hitting bruisers rather than fast skirmishers. That trade-off is the whole fight: a Jotun won't chase you down, but if it corners you at point-blank range with all three of its attacks live, the damage adds up fast. Here's what its stat block says, and what the wiki's own combat-tips section recommends for taking one down.

Know the Numbers Before You Engage

Add up a Jotun's body health and the total is steep: 550 HP × 4 body parts (head, torso, arms, legs) = 2,200 HP, and that's before the 800 HP Hardlight shield covering the whole body is even accounted for. Together that's 3,000 HP of effective health between you and a kill — assuming the shield has to be broken the normal way (more on the sneak-attack exception below).

The wiki's own "Codename" field lists the Jotun as "The Bulwark," and its GATE Compendium entry frames it as a bio-engineered Gatekeeper produced by "the clandestine bio-enhancement program run by Synaptic Labs" — grown from Neophyte volunteers who "possessed specific growth factors that often carried them safely through the transition in muscle mass, height and stamina." In plain terms: Jotuns are the tallest Gatekeeper variant, described on the wiki as "masked giants that dwarf players in both height and body mass," wearing "enormous coats over thickly padded combat armor." The wiki doesn't give a recommended player level or gear tier for the fight, so treat that as undocumented — the numbers below are the only hard guidance available.

The Jotun's Three Attacks

Card comparing the Jotun's Gatling Fire, Wallop, and Cluster Grenade attacks

The wiki documents exactly three attacks:

  • Gatling Fire — a Ranged Attack dealing 35 damage (type: Heavy Bullet). The wiki notes the "bullet firerate starts slow but very quickly accelerates," it "carries a large magazine, but still requires reloading," and it "can cause Bleeding."
  • Wallop — the Melee Attack, dealing 50 damage (type: Blunt). Per the wiki, it simply "clobbers an enemy in range with their fist."
  • Cluster Grenade — dealing 150 damage (type: Explosive), by far the hardest single hit. The Jotun "throws a red cluster grenade, which after a short delay explodes into several smaller munitions."

Do the math on that spread and the grenade is three times (150 ÷ 50 = 3) as punishing as the melee hit, and roughly four times (150 ÷ 35 ≈ 4.3) the ranged hit — it's the attack worth backing away from first. The wiki also flags a reload window: "Jotuns only reload their LMGs after they run out of ammo. Interrupting them regularly while they're shooting will keep them at a more manageable firerate" — meaning breaking line of sight during Gatling Fire denies the Jotun its own throttle on damage output.

Breaking the Hardlight Shield

The shield is the actual gate to this fight. Per the wiki: "Jotuns have a Hardlight shield that covers their body, which must first be broken in order to harm them. Unlike other Gatekeeper forces that activate their shield upon combat, the Jotun's shield is always up." Confirmed ways around or through it:

  • Sneak attack. "Jotuns can be dealt damage (or even killed) before putting up shields if players can catch them off guard by successfully sneaking up on them" — the one way to skip the 800 HP shield health entirely.
  • Null Grenades "will disable Hardlight shields" outright.
  • Acid and Holy damage weapons — the wiki names the Skink and the Lodestone Bolt as examples — "will significantly harm a vulnerable Jotun" once the shield is down.
  • Grenades, Laser Tripmines, and Rockets — the wiki states Jotuns "have no special resistances to Electricity or Explosives," and that these three "will decimate a Jotun quickly, as long as their Hardlight shield has been disabled."
  • Penetrator Rockets are the outlier: they "are able to bypass the shield, killing the Jotun with a single rocket, but only if the rocket passes through them" — if a solid object sits near the Jotun, "the rocket will simply explode, not even breaking the Jotun's shield."
  • Flamethrower, situationally: "Once you reach a certain stage in the Residence Sector, the Flamethrower can devastate the Jotun, especially when he is busy reloading."

The wiki doesn't give exact damage or disable-duration numbers for the Null Grenade, the Acid/Holy weapons, or the Flamethrower against a Jotun specifically — treat those as confirmed-effective but not quantified, undocumented beyond the qualitative call-outs above.

What a Jotun Drops

Two separate drop tables apply — combat drops and post-kill harvestable drops:

    Combat drops:

  • Arcane Scrap — 2, at 100%
  • .308 Ammo — the wiki's own table reads "4-10 ... 100% of 4 40% of 4-10," which is ambiguous as rendered; read literally it implies a guaranteed 4 rounds plus a 40% chance at more up to 10, but the wiki doesn't spell that out in plain prose, so treat the exact breakdown beyond the guaranteed floor of 4 as undocumented.
  • GATE Defense Rune — 0-1, at 10%
  • Lodestone Fragment — 0-1, at 10%

    Harvestable drops (after the kill):

  • Head of a Giant — 1, at 100%
  • Kevlar Scrap — 2, at 100%
  • Giant's Pack — 0-1, at 20%

The wiki also notes where you'll cross paths with Jotuns before ever fighting one live: a dead Jotun turns up "surrounded by multiple dead Order soldiers, near the mounted machine gun on the way to the Control Center of Cascade Laboratories," and another dead one appears in the Night Realm "wearing the Night Helmet, with similarities to the Shades." The first live encounter, per the wiki, is in Cloud Reactor, where a Jotun stands "holding a Gatekeeper banner... on a pillar of stone next to two Defense Bots," and stays passive — delivering a threatening idle line — "should the player get noticed."

Combat tips

  • Total effective HP is 3,000 (2,200 body + 800 shield) unless you land a sneak attack.
  • Cluster Grenade (150 dmg) is the attack to respect most — three times the melee hit.
  • Null Grenades disable the Hardlight shield outright; a clean sneak attack skips it entirely.
  • Penetrator Rockets one-shot a Jotun only if the rocket has clear space to pass through it.
  • Interrupt Gatling Fire regularly — the wiki confirms it only reloads once its magazine empties.
  • Acid and Holy weapons (Skink, Lodestone Bolt) hit hard once the shield is down.

Running your own Abiotic Factor server

A fight like this goes smoother with a squad that isn't fighting connection drops on top of a 3,000-HP Gatekeeper. A gamever Abiotic Factor server keeps your Cascade Laboratories save online around the clock, so a Reactor or Residence Sector push doesn't stall out because the host had to log off. Setup takes minutes, and updates roll out automatically so nobody's client drifts out of sync with the server build.

Conclusion

A Jotun — "The Bulwark" — backs its 550 HP per body part and 800 HP Hardlight shield with three documented attacks: 35-damage Gatling Fire, 50-damage Wallop, and a 150-damage Cluster Grenade that hits three times as hard as the melee swing. The shield is the real gatekeeper of the fight: it's "always up," unlike other Gatekeepers, but Null Grenades, a clean sneak attack, or a well-placed Penetrator Rocket all get around it, and Acid, Holy, and standard explosive damage finish the job once it's down. Win the fight and the wiki confirms seven separate drops across two tables, from guaranteed Arcane Scrap and a Head of a Giant to a 20% chance at a Giant's Pack.
