How to Back Up and Restore Your Rust Server

A Rust base

Things go wrong on a Rust server — a bad plugin update, a corrupted save after a crash, or an accidental wipe. Backups are your safety net, letting you roll the server back to a known-good point. gamever has backups built in. This guide shows how to make, restore and download them.

Make a backup

Open the Backups tab and click Make Backup. The panel snapshots your server's current state (world and data files) and adds it to the list with a timestamp and size. Do this before any risky change — a big plugin update, a config overhaul, or a manual wipe.

You can also enable automatic backups so snapshots are taken on a schedule — look for the backup options under the server's settings, and set how often they run. Combined with your save interval, that keeps recent restore points on hand without thinking about it.

Restore a backup

On the Backups tab each snapshot has an Install Backup button:

  1. Pick the backup from the point in time you want.
  2. Click Install Backup — this replaces the current server files with that snapshot.
  3. The server loads the restored state on restart.

Install overwrites the current state. Restoring rolls the server back to that snapshot, so anything since then is lost. If you might want the current state too, Make Backup first, then restore.

Download a backup

Each snapshot also has Download Backup, which saves the archive to your own computer — handy for keeping an off-site copy, or moving a world elsewhere. Your global My backups (left sidebar) collects backups across your servers in one place.

When to use which

  • Before a risky change → Make Backup.
  • After something broke → Install the last good backup.
  • Keeping a world safe long-term → Download Backup for an off-site copy.

Additional Tips

  • Back up before plugin updates and manual wipes — the two most common "oops" moments.
  • Install = overwrite — snapshot the current state first if you're unsure.
  • Download important worlds so you have a copy independent of the server.
  • Automatic backups + a sane save interval mean you always have a recent restore point.
  • Note the timestamp when restoring so you land on the right point in time.

Conclusion

Backups turn a disaster into a two-minute fix. On gamever, Make Backup before anything risky, Install Backup to roll back when something breaks, and Download Backup to keep a copy off-site. Turn on automatic backups and you'll always have a recent save to fall back on.
