Heat, Cold and Lightweight Armor in Palworld: The Plain Version Is Never the Right One

Heat resistant armor in Palworld.

There is a rule buried in Palworld's armour data that changes what you should craft: at every tier from Pelt upward, the heat, cold and lightweight variants have higher defence than the plain armour they are based on. Not equal — higher.

Plasteel Armor is 385. Heat, Cold and Lightweight Plasteel are all 400. Ancient Armor is 800. All three of its variants are 840. The base armour is never the best choice at its own tier.

The Rule, Tier by Tier

Plasteel385400400400
Hexolite580600600600
Ancient800840840840

The gap is largest in the middle of the game. Metal Armor's variants are 50% better — 105 against 70 — while Ancient Armor's are 5% better. The early and mid tiers punish you most for crafting the plain version.

All three variants at a tier are identical on defence. Heat, Cold and Lightweight Plasteel are all exactly 400; the choice between them is entirely about the perk, not the number.

Health is identical across a tier. Every Plasteel variant carries 1,300 health, every Hexolite variant 1,750, every Ancient variant 2,400 — so the variant choice costs nothing on that axis either.

What Each Variant Actually Grants

VariantResistance profileExtra perk
PlainBalanced — Cold Lv.1 / Heat Lv.1 at mid tiers, Lv.2 / Lv.2 at AncientNone
Heat ResistantHeat one level higherFire Damage Reduction Lv. 1
Cold ResistantCold one level higherIce Damage Reduction Lv. 1
LightweightSame as plainMax Carrying Capacity Lv. 3 (Lv. 4 on Ancient)

The damage-reduction perks are the hidden value. Heat Resistant armour does not just survive a hot biome — it carries Fire Damage Reduction Lv. 1, which applies in every fight against a Fire-type Pal. Cold Resistant carries Ice Damage Reduction Lv. 1 the same way.

The lightweight variants give carrying capacity for free. Lightweight Plasteel and Hexolite grant Max Carrying Capacity Lv. 3; Lightweight Ancient Armor grants Lv. 4 — the highest in the game — while matching the heat and cold versions' defence exactly.

So the plain armour's only advantage is its technology level. Plasteel Armor unlocks at 51 and its heat variant at 53; Ancient Armor at 68 and its lightweight variant at 79. You craft the plain one because it arrives first, not because it is better.

The Climate Ladder

Card showing Palworld's heat and cold resistance levels by armor tier.

Resistance is graded in levels, and the ceiling moves with the tier:

ArmorColdHeat
Cloth OutfitLv.1—
Tundra OutfitLv.2—
Tropical Outfit—Lv.2
Metal ArmorLv.1Lv.1
Heat Resistant Metal ArmorLv.1Lv.2
Cold Resistant Metal ArmorLv.2Lv.1
Hexolite ArmorLv.2Lv.2
Heat Resistant Hexolite ArmorLv.2Lv.3
Cold Resistant Hexolite ArmorLv.3Lv.2
Ancient ArmorLv.2Lv.2
Heat-Resistant Ancient ArmorLv.2Lv.3

Level 3 does not exist below Hexolite. If a biome is defeating you at Lv.2, the answer is a higher armour tier, not a different variant of the one you have.

The Tundra and Tropical Outfits punch above their weight. At technology 9 and 25 defence, both already grant Lv.2 in their specialty — the same climate rating as a Cold or Heat Resistant Metal Armor fourteen technology levels later.

Plain Hexolite and Ancient Armor already carry Lv.2 both ways, which is why their variants are about the damage-reduction and carrying perks rather than about survival in a biome.

What to Craft

Card recommending which Palworld armor variant to build.

  • Craft the plain version only as a stopgap. It exists a few technology levels earlier and is strictly worse once the variant unlocks.
  • Pick the variant by perk, not by defence. All three at a tier are identical — 400, 600 or 840 — so choose Fire Damage Reduction, Ice Damage Reduction, or Carrying Capacity.
  • Lightweight is the default for most players. Same defence, same health, and Max Carrying Capacity Lv. 3 — rising to Lv. 4 on Ancient — with no downside published.
  • Take Heat or Cold Resistant for a specific fight, not for a biome you have already cleared. The damage reduction applies everywhere; the climate rating only matters where the climate does.
  • Keep a Tundra and Tropical Outfit early. At technology 9 they already grant Lv.2, and they weigh nothing in your technology budget.
  • Remember helmets grant no climate resistance at all. Six helmets, none with heat or cold — it is entirely a body-armour system.

Conclusion

Palworld's armour variants follow a rule the game never states: at every tier from Pelt upward, the heat, cold and lightweight versions out-defend the plain armour they are based on — Metal 70 against 105, Plasteel 385 against 400, Ancient 800 against 840 — with the gap largest in the mid game, where Metal Armor's variants are 50% better. All three variants at a tier are identical on both defence and health, so the choice is purely the perk: Fire Damage Reduction Lv. 1, Ice Damage Reduction Lv. 1, or Max Carrying Capacity Lv. 3 — rising to Lv. 4 on Lightweight Ancient Armor, the highest in the game. Climate resistance is graded in levels and Lv. 3 does not exist below Hexolite, while the Tundra and Tropical Outfits already grant Lv. 2 at technology 9 for 25 defence. And none of it applies to your head: all six helmets publish no heat or cold resistance at all.
