Guck, Crystal and Obsidian: Three Valheim Materials With Very Narrow Uses
Some Valheim materials do one job and then sit in a chest forever. Guck refuels a torch. Crystal builds a wall and an axe. Obsidian makes arrows — and, uniquely, simply finding Obsidian unlocks a Workbench upgrade and two elemental arrow types at once. Knowing which of the three is worth a detour saves a lot of pointless hauling.

Where Each One Is

Guck's two sources are very different fights. An Abomination is a major Swamp encounter; a Gucksack is a harvestable growth on a tree. If you want Guck, harvest sacks — do not hunt Abominations for it.
Crystal has three sources and one efficient one. Stone Golems are a hard Mountain fight for a building material, and Frost Blobs are incidental. The sensible route is clusters inside Frost Caves — where you are already going for Cultist and Ulv drops, and where the rare frozen-lake room holds a free fishing rod.
Obsidian occurs in boulder-like deposits on the Mountain surface, described as "black volcanic glass" — so it needs a pickaxe rather than a fight, which makes it the least dangerous of the three to collect.
All three sit in mid-game biomes, so none of this is endgame content. They are easy to walk past.
Obsidian Unlocks a Workbench Tier
This is the one genuinely important fact on this page: "Finding it unlocks the Tool shelf upgrade for the Workbench and two different kinds of elemental arrows."
Finding it. Not crafting with it — finding it. Picking up a single piece of Obsidian triggers three unlocks at once.
The Tool shelf is the Workbench's fourth upgrade. As our crafting station guide covers, a Workbench upgrades to level five, and each level adds four metres of build radius up to a maximum of 36. So an Obsidian pickup is worth four metres of buildable ground as well as recipes.
And two elemental arrow types. As our arrows guide sets out, elemental arrows are how a bow user bypasses the four bosses that resist Pierce — frost arrows at 26 Pierce + 52 Frost being the standard answer to Bonemass.
So the practical instruction is simply: pick up Obsidian the first time you see it. Even one piece. The unlocks fire on discovery, and everything downstream — a bigger Workbench radius, elemental ammunition — is gated behind a pickup most players make incidentally.
Crystal and Guck Have Two Uses Each
Crystal builds exactly two things:

The Crystal wall is the transparent building piece, and it is the only way to get a window that is genuinely a wall rather than a gap. For a hall design that wants light without a hole, it is the only option in the game.
The Crystal battleaxe is a two-handed weapon, which as our melee comparison logic implies means giving up your shield — a real cost given that Valheim shields block with their own hitsplat.
Guck is narrower still, and its headline use is fuel: it refuels standing green-burning iron torches. It also builds the Green banner and appears in crafting recipes.
Which makes Guck an aesthetic material more than a functional one. Green torches and green banners are a colour scheme, and the fuel requirement means an all-green hall has an ongoing Swamp supply line attached to it.
Budget accordingly. A decorative choice that needs restocking from the Swamp is a different commitment from one that does not — worth knowing before you commit a hall to green.
