Glass in Dragonwilds: Limestone, Sandstone, and the Soda Ash That Does Nothing

The Blast Furnace in Ashenfall.

Dragonwilds has an item called Soda Ash, whose description reads "One of the ingredients for making glass, obtained from cooking Swamp Weed." It is not used to make glass. The wiki is blunt about it: "Soda ash is presently not in the game."

The glass chain that does exist runs limestone and sandstone → grindstone → blast furnace → jeweler's bench, and it produces exactly three things.

The Chain That Works

1Grindstone1 Limestone1 Ground Limestone0
1Grindstone1 Sandstone5 Ground Sandstone0
2Blast furnace3 Ground Limestone + 3 Ground Sandstone1 Molten Glass60
3Jeweler's bench1 Molten GlassGlass Pane / Vessel / Decoration40 / 0.5 / 40

Limestone is the bottleneck, not sandstone. One sandstone grinds into five ground sandstone, while one limestone grinds into one ground limestone. So a single molten glass costs three limestone but only 0.6 of a sandstone — mine accordingly.

Sixty Artisan XP per molten glass makes the blast furnace step the most XP-dense part of the chain by a wide margin. The jeweler's bench pays 40 for a pane or a decoration and 0.5 for a vessel.

Two stations gate this. The grindstone unlocks when granite reaches your inventory; the blast furnace unlocks after you obtain coal, and it needs fuel pellets to run — charcoal, adhesive and coarse animal fur combined at a blacksmith's bench.

The Three Glass Products

ItemWeightStackWhat it is for
Glass pane0.150Construction — windows and stained glass walls
Glass vessel1.099A component for various recipes
Glass decoration0.150An ornament for the house

All three come from one molten glass each, so the choice is purely what you need — there is no efficiency argument between them.

Glass panes are the construction one. They feed the window pieces, including the stained glass window wall and the narrow stained glass window wall — the parts that make a stone house look finished rather than fortified.

The vessel is the odd one. At 0.5 Artisan XP it is the cheapest thing the jeweler's bench makes, and it exists as a component rather than as a finished item.

The Two Items That Are Not In The Game

Card noting the two Dragonwilds glass and fuel items that do not exist yet.

Two items in this corner of the game have full pages, full descriptions and no function:

  • Soda Ash"One of the ingredients for making glass, obtained from cooking Swamp Weed." The wiki records a crafting-table recipe of 3 Swamp Weed, then states plainly that the item is not presently in the game and that the molten glass it would forge into is not present either.
  • Fuel Briquette"Produced by burning wood in a kiln, charcoal is a very efficient fuel." The wiki says it is a fuel usable in any processing station requiring a heat source, then notes it is currently not in the game and does not have a set recipe.

Both descriptions read like instructions, which is exactly why they mislead. Soda ash implies a swamp-weed route to glass that does not exist; fuel briquettes imply a fuel tier above charcoal that also does not exist.

Ground sandstone's own description carries the same problem in the other direction. It reads that with the proper tools it "can be made into glass in the Furnace" — the ordinary furnace, not the blast furnace — and the page adds that the glass use was a future update at the time of writing. That update landed; the station is the blast furnace.

The practical rule for this whole area: trust the recipe, not the flavour text.

Building the Chain

Card listing the stations needed for the Dragonwilds glass chain.

To make glass at all you need three things standing:

  1. A grindstone — 18 Stone, 12 Oak Logs, 6 Iron Bars, 12 Granite. Unlocked by receiving granite. It must not have a roof above it to function.
  2. A blast furnace — 12 Granite, 8 Iron Bars, 4 Draconic Leather, 10 Fire Runes, 2 Vault Cores. Unlocked by obtaining coal. It also must not have a roof above it, and it burns fuel pellets.
  3. A jeweler's bench, where all three glass items are actually made.

Cast Superheat on the blast furnace. The Artisan level 20 spell increases processing speed by 90% for 30 seconds on any fire-based station, at a 10-second cooldown and a 3.75-second cast — which means one player can keep about two machines permanently superheated.

Plan the open-sky requirement into your base. The grindstone and the blast furnace both refuse to work under a roof, so the glass chain wants a courtyard, not a workshop.

Running your own Dragonwilds server

A glass chain spans three stations, two of which need open sky, and it is the kind of infrastructure a group builds once and shares. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall persistent with automatic updates and one-click backups.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds glass is made from three ground limestone and three ground sandstone at a blast furnace, for 60 Artisan XP per molten glass — the most XP-dense step in the chain — and each molten glass then becomes one of three jeweler's bench items: a glass pane for construction, a glass vessel as a component, or a glass decoration. Limestone is the bottleneck, since one limestone grinds to one ground limestone while one sandstone grinds to five, making a molten glass cost three limestone and 0.6 of a sandstone. Two items in this area exist only as text: Soda Ash, whose description names it a glass ingredient, is "presently not in the game", and the Fuel Briquette is "currently not in the game and does not have a set recipe" — so trust recipes over flavour text here. Both stations in the chain, the grindstone and the blast furnace, must not have a roof above them, and both respond to Superheat, which adds 90% processing speed for 30 seconds.
