Gjall and Ticks in Valheim: A 1,500-Health Bomber That Drops Three Passengers

The Valheim Mistlands.

The Gjall is the Mistlands' flying siege engine: 1,500 health, immune to stagger, and it spits for 80 Fire from above the mist. But the attack that actually kills players is not the spit. Every 50 seconds it drops an egg, and each egg produces three Ticks — 50-health parasites that attach to you and deal 50 Pierce every half a second until you get them off.

The Gjall

Card listing Gjall health, its egg weak point and its three attacks.

Resistant toFire
Immune toSpirit, Stagger
Weak pointEggs — very weak to Pierce

TameableNo

The weak point is the eggs on its underside, and they are very weak to Pierce. That is the entire fight. A Gjall's body is a large health pool with a fire resistance; the egg sacs are a separate hit zone that takes multiplied arrow damage. A bow aimed at the body is a long fight. A bow aimed at the eggs is a short one.

Immune to stagger means there is no interrupt. You cannot stop a Gjall mid-attack, and you cannot buy yourself a window by burst damage.

Its Three Attacks

AttackDamageCooldown
Spit50 Blunt, 80 Fire6s
EggSpawns 3 Ticks50s
Shake20 Blunt10s

The spit is the visible threat — 130 total damage every six seconds, delivered from the air. The shake is minor at 20 Blunt.

The egg is the one to plan around. Every 50 seconds a Gjall produces three Ticks. A fight that runs three minutes has released roughly nine of them, and they do not despawn when the Gjall dies. A long Gjall fight becomes a Tick fight, which is why killing it quickly matters more than killing it safely.

Where Gjall Come From

SpawnDetail
Middle of the Mistlands, daytimeLimit 1, frequency 1, no stars
Middle of the Mistlands, nighttimeLimit 1, frequency 1, stars yes — despawn at dawn
"What's up, Gjall!?" eventLimit 1, frequency 6, no stars — see below

The day/night split is the useful detail: starred Gjall only spawn at night, and they despawn at dawn. A 4,500-health 2★ Gjall is a nighttime problem exclusively. Daytime Mistlands travel meets only the 1,500-health version.

The "What's up, Gjall!?" raid — internally army_gjall — is enabled by carrying a Torn spirit, Wisp or Wisplight, which is to say by the act of entering the Mistlands equipped to see. It is disabled by the Queen's power or her drop, so killing her ends it. That is the usual Valheim pattern: the raid exists for exactly the window in which the biome is still new to you.

The Tick

Card showing Tick health and its 50 Pierce every half second attach damage.

FieldValue
Health 0★ / 1★ / 2★50 / 100 / 150
Weak toPierce
Immune toSpirit
AttackAttach: 50 Pierce every 0.5 seconds
DropsBlood clot, Tick trophy

Fifty Pierce every half a second is 100 damage per second. That is the highest sustained damage rate of anything discussed here, from a creature with 50 health. A Tick that attaches and is not removed will kill a fully geared player in a few seconds.

Its saving grace is that it is weak to Pierce and has almost no health. An arrow removes one. The problem is that they arrive three at a time, from above, in mist that hides them until they are on you.

Fighting Both

Card listing Mistlands tactics: shoot the eggs, kill Ticks first, do not let it linger.

  • Shoot the eggs, not the body. They are the weak point and they are very weak to Pierce.
  • Kill it fast, for a specific reason. Every 50 seconds it adds three Ticks to the fight, and they persist after it dies.
  • Do not bring fire. The Gjall is resistant to it.
  • Do not plan on staggering it. It is immune.
  • Ticks come first. 100 damage per second beats anything the Gjall is doing to you. Peel them before you resume shooting.
  • Travel by day. Starred Gjall are a night-only spawn and despawn at dawn.
  • Both want a bow. Pierce is the Gjall's egg weakness and the Tick's weakness — one damage type answers the whole encounter.

What They Drop

The Gjall drops a Bilebag, guaranteed at every star tier, plus a 30% trophy — a generous rate by Valheim standards. Ticks drop Blood clots and their own trophy.

Running your own Valheim server

The Mistlands is the biome where a group splits duties — one player on the Gjall, others peeling Ticks — and that requires everyone in the same persistent world. A gamever Valheim server keeps that world running for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.

Conclusion

The Gjall carries 1,500 / 3,000 / 4,500 health, is resistant to Fire and immune to both Spirit and stagger, so there is no interrupt available. Its weak point is the egg sacs on its underside, which are very weak to Pierce — shooting the body is a long fight, shooting the eggs is a short one. Its spit lands 50 Blunt and 80 Fire every 6 seconds, but the attack that decides the encounter is the egg every 50 seconds, producing three Ticks that outlive the Gjall itself. Starred Gjall spawn only at night and despawn at dawn, so daytime Mistlands travel meets nothing above 1,500 health, and the "What's up, Gjall!?" raid is enabled by carrying a Torn spirit, Wisp or Wisplight and disabled by The Queen's power or drop. The Tick has just 50 health and is weak to Pierce, but while attached it deals 50 Pierce every half second — 100 damage per second, the highest sustained rate in this whole set of creatures, which makes peeling them the immediate priority over any damage you were doing. One damage type answers the entire encounter: Pierce, for the eggs and the passengers alike.
