Garou Chits: The Umbral Sands Economy & What to Actually Sell

Card explaining Dragonwilds' Garou Chit currency and the three merchants.

Dragonwilds has no main currency — each region mints its own, and none of them convert. Umbral Sands runs on Garou Chits, and almost nobody uses its economy properly. Garou Chits are the Moon Garou's currency, and the three merchants who accept them each buy a completely different category of goods — so the material sitting in your chest is worthless to two of them and valuable to the third. Get that mapping right and the desert funds itself. Here is how the system works and where the money actually is.

A note on sourcing. Jagex have never published a price list — their only mentions of this system are inside known-issues notes. The figures below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, which documents each merchant's stock in detail. They are accurate as catalogued, but prices can change with any patch, so treat them as a map rather than a contract.

The Three Merchants

MerchantSettlementBuys
DomriAlcarridPlants, Textiles, Gems
BeartachManafemWood, Stone, Metal
IasadairUzzerTissue, Hide, Leather

The split is clean and it is the whole trick. Ore goes to Beartach. Herbs and cloth go to Domri. Anything that came off an animal goes to Iasadair. Carrying a mixed load to one merchant means most of it is unsellable.

All three share a few lines, which is worth knowing because it gives you a floor price anywhere:

  • Garou Artifact — 500 chits, bought by all three. This is the single most valuable common sale in the desert.
  • Garou Weave — 150 chits, sold by all three.
  • Tea Leaves — 20, Dihydrogen Monoxide — 25, also sold by all three.

Chits also come from chests across Umbral Sands, and — most usefully early on — from the side quests unlocked during the region's main quest, Icthlarin's Little Helper. If you are short of chits and have not done those, that is the fastest fix.

Where the Money Is

Card ranking the most valuable Garou Chit sales in Dragonwilds.

Leather is the highest-value renewable good in the region, and Iasadair is the merchant who takes it:

ItemChits
Scorch Leather150
Red Dragonhide Leather140
Blue Dragon Leather120
Cursed Leather120
Green Dragonhide Leather100
Draconic Leather60
Dire Wolf Leather36

Note the processing margin. Raw Red Dragon Hide sells for 35, but processed into leather it is 140four times the value for a tanning step you were going to do anyway. The same pattern holds across the hides: Green Dragon Hide 25 → Green Dragonhide Leather 100; Blue Dragon Hide 30 → Blue Dragon Leather 120.

Never sell raw hide. That is the single most profitable habit in this article.

Domri's high end is textiles and gems:

ItemChits
Infinity Cloth180
Dragonstone140
Desert Cloth120
Diamond120
Sapphire80
Red Topaz60
Padded Cloth48

Beartach's is metal, and the ladder is exactly what you would expect: Adamant Bar 60, Mithril Bar 48, Black Metal Bar 48, Steel Bar 36, Silver/Gold Bar 24, Iron Bar 18, Bronze Bar 12.

Bars beat ore substantiallyAdamantite Ore is 12, an Adamant Bar is 60 — so the smelting step is worth five times the raw material. Same rule as leather: process before you sell.

What Chits Buy

Card listing what Garou Chits can be spent on in Dragonwilds.

Each merchant's stock is organised into four tiers, and the top of the range is where the chits actually go:

TierTypical priceExamples
Mounts9,999Zamorakian Pledgesaddle, Infernal Blightbeak
Top cosmetics / rarities7,500Lunate Shawl, Sun-Bleached Vest, Chitinous Carapace, Fractured Obsidian Construct
Mid5,000Lunular Wrappings, Crushed Obsidian Construct, Barbed Appendage, Sun-Bleached Leggings
Entry2,500Selenic Veil, Sun-Bleached Head Wrap, Chipped Obsidian Construct
Materials9–150Garou Weave 150, ores, meats, herbs

Mounts at 9,999 chits are the real goal, and there are two — the Zamorakian Pledgesaddle and the Infernal Blightbeak. That is roughly 71 red dragonhide leathers each, which sounds enormous until you look at what a dragon actually drops.

The Sun-Bleached set is split across all three merchants — the Vest from Beartach, the Leggings from Iasadair, the Head Wrap from Domri. If you want the full set you must trade with all three, which is presumably the point of the specialisation.

Merchants also sell materials back to you, and some at genuinely useful prices: Mithril Ore 30, Iron Ore 24, Coal 24, Silver and Gold Ore 18 from Beartach; Dragonwolf Hide 45 from Iasadair. If you are missing one ingredient for a craft, buying it is often faster than a mining trip.

Running the Economy on a Server

Card giving practical Garou Chit advice for a Dragonwilds group.

Practical habits that make the difference:

  1. Process everything before selling. Hide → leather quadruples the value. Ore → bar roughly quintuples it. Never carry raw material to a merchant.
  2. Sort your stock by merchant, not by type. One chest labelled Domri, one Beartach, one Iasadair. Since all chests are remotely accessible for crafting, this costs nothing.
  3. Sell the Garou Artifacts. At 500 chits to any of the three, they are the best common drop in the region.
  4. Do the Icthlarin's Little Helper side quests for your starting capital.
  5. Sell what you have outgrown. Green dragonhide, maple logs and coarse fur are worth more as chits than as clutter once you are in adamant.

On a six-player server, this is a role worth assigning. One person doing the tanning and smelting for the group, then running a single selling trip, will out-earn six people each selling raw drops at whichever merchant they happen to walk past.

Two known issues Jagex have acknowledged, so you can recognise them rather than doubt your maths:

  • "Garou Chit values are incorrectly displayed on inventory items."
  • "Notification showing incorrect value of inventory items' stacks at Umbral Sands' Merchants", and "players moving stacks while trading in the Merchant's Shop may show the incorrect currency value when trading with the vendor. You are receiving the correct amount."

That last line is the reassuring one: the display is wrong, the transaction is right.

And Garou Chits are only one of three currencies. Jagex's known-issues note about "Death Exchange or Evil Emporium vendors requiring reputation from Umbral Sands" reads like a reputation system; it is not. Dragonwilds runs three separate regional currencies, and none of them convert:

CurrencyEarned inSpent at
Soul FragmentsFellhollow — killing undead, or region questsDeath's Exchange
Infernal FragmentsDowdun Reach — Black Knights, demons, or region questsEvil Emporium
Garou ChitsUmbral SandsThe three Garou merchants

There is no main currency in Dragonwilds. Each region mints its own, spendable only in that region's shop — so the chits you are hoarding here buy nothing in Fellhollow, and a Soul Fragment surplus cannot fund a mount.

That changes how you should farm. Working a region is the only way to earn its currency, so finishing a region's shop is a decision to make before you move on — coming back later means re-farming the region's specific kills and quests rather than converting wealth you already have.

Practical tips

  • Domri buys plants, textiles and gems; Beartach buys wood, stone and metal; Iasadair buys tissue, hide and leather.
  • All three buy Garou Artifacts at 500 chits — the best common sale in the desert.
  • Never sell raw hide or ore. Red Dragon Hide 35 → Red Dragonhide Leather 140.
  • Adamantite Ore 12 → Adamant Bar 60.
  • Mounts cost 9,999 chits — the Zamorakian Pledgesaddle and Infernal Blightbeak.
  • The Sun-Bleached set is split across all three merchants.
  • Chit values display incorrectly — Jagex confirm you receive the correct amount.
  • Three separate currencies, none convertible: Soul Fragments (Fellhollow → Death's Exchange), Infernal Fragments (Dowdun Reach → Evil Emporium), Garou Chits (Umbral Sands).

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

An economy rewards a group that divides labour — one person tanning, one smelting, one running the selling trip — and that only works when everyone plays the same persistent world rather than restarting in whoever's session is up. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall and your stockpile available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Garou Chits are Umbral Sands' currency, earned from chests, from the Icthlarin's Little Helper side quests, and above all from selling to the region's three specialised merchants: Domri in Alcarrid (plants, textiles, gems), Beartach in Manafem (wood, stone, metal) and Iasadair in Uzzer (tissue, hide, leather). The rule that matters most is process before you sellRed Dragon Hide is 35 chits raw and 140 as leather, and Adamantite Ore is 12 while an Adamant Bar is 60. Garou Artifacts sell to all three at 500, the best common sale available. Chits buy four tiers of stock topping out at two mounts at 9,999 — the Zamorakian Pledgesaddle and Infernal Blightbeak — with the Sun-Bleached set deliberately split across all three merchants. If your totals look wrong, they probably are not: Jagex confirm the displayed values are buggy but the amount you receive is correct.
