Fuling Villages in Valheim: Barley, Flax, and a 50% Totem Per Bonfire

A Fuling Village in the Plains.

Fuling Villages are the Plains' densest points of interest, and they are the only place to get Barley and Flax — the two crops that gate every late-game food and every linen recipe. They are also where Fuling totems come from, at a 50% chance per bonfire, and you need five to summon Yagluth.

On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.

What Is Actually In One

The crop patches are the reason to come. A patch of 12 barley at two each is 24 barley, and a patch of 11 flax at two each is 22 flax — and neither crop exists anywhere else in Valheim. Everything downstream of them, from bread to linen thread, starts in a Fuling Village.

Harvest, do not fight, if that is all you need. The crops are on the ground and the village is defended, but a fast raid on the patches is a different proposition from clearing the place.

Once you have the seed stock, growing it is a separate job — see How to Grow Barley in Valheim.

The Totem Maths

Yagluth's offering is five Fuling totems, and each bonfire in a village has a 50% chance of one on an altar beside it.

That is an expected two totems per four bonfires. Villages vary in size, so the practical guidance is:

  • Check every bonfire. Half of them have nothing, and the altar is easy to walk past.
  • Expect to clear more than one village. Five totems at a coin flip per bonfire is rarely one visit.
  • Berserkers also drop them. The Fuling Berserker at 800 / 1,600 / 2,400 health lists the Fuling totem among its drops, so the fights and the altars are two routes to the same item.

The bonfires are also worth destroying for a second reason — recycling them returns Surtling cores, which are otherwise a Black Forest material.

Who Defends It

Card listing the three Fuling types defending a village.

Villages are held by three Fuling types, and their defensive profile is unusual:

DefenderHealthWeak toResistant to
Fuling175 / 350 / 525NothingNothing
Fuling Shaman100NothingNothing
Fuling Berserker800 / 1,600 / 2,400NothingNothing

All three have completely empty weakness and resistance tables, with only Spirit immunity — so there is no clever loadout and no wrong one. Bring your highest damage-per-second weapon and nothing else matters.

    Two priorities in the fight:

  • Kill Shamans first. At 100 health they die instantly, and their Protect ability applies a 100-point shield to nearby Fulings — which is why groups with one feel unkillable.
  • Stagger the Berserker. Its 30% threshold means 240 damage at base, and since nothing is resisted, that is genuinely reachable.

Berserkers hit for 130 Blunt with 100 Chop and 40 Pickaxe riding along, so do not fight one next to anything you have built.

Capturing One

Card explaining what a captured Valheim Fuling Village is worth.

A cleared village is a real asset rather than a looted ruin:

  • The crop patches are a Barley and Flax source you can return to.
  • The bonfires recycle into Surtling cores, which are otherwise a Burial Chamber trip.
  • The tanning racks give 6 Leather scraps, 5 Flint and a Deer hide each.
  • The huts break down into materials, saving you carrying building supplies into the Plains.

Build a portal before you clear it. The Plains is far from a starting base, and a village you cannot return to easily is a village you will loot once.

One caution about Deathsquitos. They spawn anywhere in the Plains at a limit of three, they have 10 health, and they sting for 90 Pierce on a 10-second cooldown. A village raid is exactly the situation where one arrives unannounced — so keep sound on and face the buzz.

Conclusion

Fuling Villages are the Plains' densest points of interest and the only source of Barley and Flax — in patches of 12 barley and 11 flax, each harvested for two, giving 24 and 22 per patch. They are also where Fuling totems come from, at a 50% chance on an altar beside each bonfire, and since Yagluth's offering is five, expect to visit more than one village; Fuling Berserkers drop them too. Their defenders — Fuling, Shaman and Berserker — all have completely empty weakness and resistance tables, so damage-per-second is the only consideration, with two priorities: kill the 100-health Shaman first because its Protect applies a 100-point shield, and stagger the Berserker at 240 damage. A cleared village is worth keeping: the crops regrow, the bonfires recycle into Surtling cores, and each tanning rack gives 6 Leather scraps, 5 Flint and a Deer hide.
