Fuel in Dragonwilds: Charcoal, Adhesive and the Pellets the Blast Furnace Needs

Dragonwilds has two smelting stations and they burn different things. The furnace runs on charcoal. The blast furnace runs on fuel pellets — and a fuel pellet needs charcoal, adhesive and coarse animal fur, which means three separate supply lines converge before you smelt a single high-tier bar.
Everything starts at the kiln, which is the only station that makes both charcoal and adhesive.
The Kiln Does Two Jobs

| Input | Output | Ratio | Artisan XP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any logs — ash, oak, willow, maple, yew, blightwood | Charcoal | 1 per log | 20 |
| Swamp tar | Adhesive | 1:1 | 20 |
Charcoal provides three minutes of fuel time per unit, which the wiki frames as an improvement over burning wood directly.
And it can be doubled. Milling logs into planks first yields twice as much charcoal — one log becomes two planks, and two planks become two charcoal. That is six minutes of furnace time per tree instead of three.
Swamp tar is gathered from the ground in the Whispering Swamp, not mined or dropped, and its only use is the kiln. Adhesive is made one-to-one, and it feeds four things: fuel pellets, hard leather, tanner's kits and weapon barbs.
The kiln costs 8 Ash Logs, 20 Stone, 6 Clay and 10 Fire Runes, and unlocks when clay reaches your inventory. It also fires clay items.
The Two Furnaces
| Furnace | Blast furnace | |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | Charcoal | Fuel pellets |
| Unlocked by | Tin ore in inventory | Coal in inventory |
| Recipe | 24 Stone, and more | 12 Granite, 8 Iron Bars, 4 Draconic Leather, 10 Fire Runes, 2 Vault Cores |
| Roof | Must not have one | Must not have one |
| Superheat | Yes | Yes |
The blast furnace is a genuine expedition item. Two Vault Cores and four Draconic Leather put it well past the ordinary furnace, and it exists to smelt the high-tier ores the basic one cannot.
The ordinary furnace has a documented lie in its description. It claims it can fire clay; the wiki notes that despite the description, it cannot do so at this time. Clay firing belongs to the kiln.
Fuel Pellets

| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Made at | Blacksmith's bench |
| Materials | 1 Charcoal + 1 Adhesive + 1 Coarse Animal Fur |
| Artisan XP | 0 |
| Unlocked by | Receiving coal and building a blast furnace |
Look at where those three ingredients come from. Charcoal is woodcutting plus a kiln; adhesive is a Whispering Swamp gathering trip plus the same kiln; coarse animal fur comes from killing kebbits and rats, or 1–2 per bird nest. Three unrelated activities feed one pellet.
That is the real cost of the blast furnace — not the vault cores, but the ongoing three-way supply chain behind every batch of fuel.
The unlock has a known snag. The wiki flags it directly: "Be cautious some players reported that the recipe was not available to them." If the pellet recipe does not appear after both conditions are met, that is a documented problem rather than a missed step.
Coarse animal fur has a second job, incidentally: the first one you pick up unlocks the bedroll.
Superheat Changes the Economics

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Unlocked at | Artisan 20 |
| Runes | 5 Air, 15 Fire |
| Cooldown | 10 seconds |
| Cast time | 3.75 seconds |
| Effect | +90% processing speed for 30 seconds |
| Works on | Campfires, grills, kilns, furnaces, blast furnaces and imbuing barrels |
One player can keep about two machines permanently superheated, casting off cooldown — the wiki does that arithmetic itself, and the 3.75-second cast against a 10-second cooldown is why the number is two rather than three.
That makes Superheat a group role. On a shared world, one person cycling Superheat between a kiln and a furnace roughly doubles the throughput of both while everyone else gathers.
The wiki's suggested uses are telling: bulk clean water, and rapidly processing clay vessels and adhesive to fill other machines in multi-step recipes. Superheat is at its best on the middle of a chain, not the end.
And remember the roof rule. The furnace and blast furnace must not have a roof above them, so the fuel half of your base belongs in a courtyard.
Running your own Dragonwilds server
A fuel chain spanning three gathering systems and four stations is exactly the kind of infrastructure a group builds once and everybody draws from. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall persistent with automatic updates and one-click backups.
Conclusion
Dragonwilds' fuel runs in three tiers. The kiln turns any logs into charcoal at 20 Artisan XP and swamp tar into adhesive one-to-one, and each charcoal is worth three minutes of fuel time — doubled if you mill the logs into planks first. The furnace burns charcoal; the blast furnace burns fuel pellets, made at a blacksmith's bench from 1 charcoal, 1 adhesive and 1 coarse animal fur — three ingredients drawn from woodcutting, a Whispering Swamp gathering trip and killing kebbits and rats, which is the blast furnace's true ongoing cost rather than its 2 Vault Cores. Two documented quirks are worth carrying: the ordinary furnace cannot fire clay despite its description saying it can, and some players report the fuel pellet recipe failing to appear even after obtaining coal and building the furnace. Finally, Superheat at Artisan 20 adds 90% processing speed for 30 seconds on 5 Air and 15 Fire runes, and at a 3.75-second cast against a 10-second cooldown, one player can keep about two machines running hot indefinitely.
