Fists in Valheim: Your Second Punch Does Double Damage

A Valheim fist weapon.

Fists are the class most players never open the page for, and it holds three mechanics nothing else does. The punch is a two-hit combo where the second — the left hand — does double damage. The kick secondary carries 6× staggering. And bare fists cost no durability at all, which makes them the correct weapon against the weakest enemies in the game.

The Four Entries

Card listing Valheim's fist weapons with damage, knockback and stamina.

FistDamageKnockbackStamina
Bare fistsBlunt 554
Paws of the BearSlash 25 / 37106
Flesh RippersSlash 60 / 722010
Vilebone MaulclawsPierce 60, Slash 20 / 321012

Bare fists are an entry in the table, which is the class's most useful fact. They deal 5 Blunt for 4 stamina, cost nothing to make, and — crucially — consume no weapon durability, because there is no weapon.

Flesh Rippers at 60/72 Slash are the class's damage pick and carry double the knockback of anything else in it.

Vilebone Maulclaws split their damage60 Pierce and 20/32 Slash — which is the only fist weapon with a second type, and worth noting because Pierce is resisted by a long list of creatures while Slash usually is not.

The Left Hand Hits Twice as Hard

    The mechanic is stated plainly:

The punch has a 2-hit combo where the second punch (left hand) does double damage.

That is a straightforward damage-per-second consideration: completing the pair is worth 50% more than throwing two first punches. With Flesh Rippers at 60, the pair delivers 60 then 120 — 180 across two swings against 120 for two openers.

It also means interrupting your own combo is expensive in this class specifically. Most Valheim weapons treat each swing as independent; fists explicitly do not.

The Kick Staggers Six Times Harder

Card explaining the Valheim fist secondary attack and its 6x stagger.

The secondary attack is a kick that does additional knockback with 6× staggering.

Six times stagger is the biggest such multiplier in the game. Valheim's stagger thresholds are a percentage of an enemy's health — 30% on a Seeker, 50% on a Wolf, 33% on an Abomination — so a 6× contribution collapses the damage needed to open something up by a factor of six.

Run it against a Wolf at 80 health and a 50% threshold: staggering normally takes 40 damage. A kick contributing 6× reaches that threshold on roughly 7 damage worth of hits.

That makes the fist kick a utility tool rather than a damage one, and it is available from the very start of the game with no crafting at all.

When Bare Fists Are Correct

Card explaining when Valheim's bare fists are the right choice.

The class description names the two situations:

Bare fists can be useful against the weakest of enemies; especially when the player wants to avoid the cost of weapon durability. It also costs less stamina than most weapons.

That is a genuine strategy, not a curiosity. Valheim's early roster contains creatures with 5, 10 and 20 health — Necks, Boars and Greylings — and a 5-damage punch at 4 stamina kills all three in a handful of swings without touching your tool's durability.

    Two practical uses:

  • Clearing Meadows chaff on a long trip. A repair bench is not always nearby, and Necks and Greylings do not justify wearing down an axe you need for trees.
  • Stamina management. At 4 stamina the punch is cheaper than every weapon in the game except the Torch and Flint knife, both also at 4.

The kick is available bare-handed too, so the 6× stagger is accessible with no equipment whatsoever.

Where Fists Sit Overall

Fists are not a competitive damage class — Flesh Rippers' 60 sits below the Black metal sword's 95, the Black metal atgeir's 105 and Splitnir's 135. What they offer is:

  • A durability-free option for trash.
  • The largest stagger multiplier in the game on their secondary.
  • A damage-doubling combo that rewards finishing the pair.
  • The lowest stamina floor available.

Treat the class as a toolkit rather than a weapon line. The kick alone justifies knowing it exists, since it works with empty hands at any point in a run.

Conclusion

Valheim's fist class has four entriesBare fists at 5 Blunt for 4 stamina, Paws of the Bear at 25/37, Flesh Rippers at 60/72 with double the class's knockback, and Vilebone Maulclaws as the only one splitting damage, at 60 Pierce plus 20/32 Slash. Three mechanics make the class worth knowing regardless of its low numbers. The punch is a two-hit combo whose second, left-handed swing does double damage, so completing the pair is worth 50% more than two openers — 60 then 120 with Flesh Rippers. The kick secondary carries 6× staggering, the largest such multiplier in the game, which against a Wolf's 40-damage stagger threshold reduces the requirement to roughly 7 damage worth of hits. And bare fists consume no weapon durability at all, which makes them the correct answer to the 5, 10 and 20-health creatures of the Meadows on a trip where a repair bench is far away.
