Fishing in Dragonwilds: How to Start, the Three Spells & Why It Heals Best

Card showing how to unlock Fishing in Dragonwilds, starting with a net and a quest.

Fishing is the skill RuneScape: Dragonwilds does not hand you. There is no starting rod and no obvious prompt — you have to craft a net first, and the net itself is gated behind unlocking coarse thread. Getting through that opening is the hardest part of the skill. And it is worth doing, because the later health rework made fish the best healing items in the game.

Starting Out

StepWhat to do
1Unlock coarse threadFlax plus a Spinning Wheel
2Craft a fishing net
3This prompts the quest with the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village
4Reach Fishing level 3 to unlock your first rod

The net comes before the quest, not after. That is the part that stalls people: crafting the net is what triggers the quest prompt, so there is nothing to find in the world until you have made one.

Jagex's own framing: "Starting out, it'll be just a net and a dream, like the noobs over on the mainland."

A dozen fish types shipped with the skill, and it runs the full 99 levels — with a Fishing Skill Cape craftable at 99.

The Three Skill Spells

Card listing Dragonwilds' three fishing skill spells and what each does.

Fishing launched with three skill spells, and they do genuinely different jobs:

LevelSpellEffect
10Fishing Frenzy"A fishing node springs to life with a significantly increased number of fish"each catch yields an extra fish of the same type while active
30Infernal RodEnchants your rod with fire for 2 minutes; every fish caught is instantly cooked
55FishnadoConjures a tornado that pulls up to 5 fish from a node straight to you

And the rest of the tree, which is where most of the value sits:

LevelUnlockEffect
AllPassiveIncreases the fish's stamina drain rate by 1% per level
3Fishing RodCraft your first rod
17Pristine FishRare fish — more food when cooked, or a decoration
23Fish Weight ReductionAll fish weigh 25% less
34Fishing BarrelVery high capacity fish storage
39Tackle BoxStorage for your baits
43Fishing Frenzy upgradeFrenzy also cuts fish maximum stamina by 15%
49Net catch chanceRaised to 75%
60Fishnado cooldownReduced
70Angler's Hat10% chance per catch of a bonus, while worn
99Fishing CapeThe skillcape and its trimmed variant

Level 49 is the quiet milestone. Raising net catch chance to 75% turns net fishing from a coin flip into a reliable food supply — and nets, unlike rods, work in any region regardless of material.

Infernal Rod is the one that changes your routine. Cooking on contact skips the entire processing step — no campfire, no Grill, and no chance of burning the ingredient, which is otherwise a real risk since Cooking 3.0 reintroduced burnt food.

Fishnado is the bulk option, delivering a haul straight to your inventory. Jagex's warning is characteristic: "Might need to wash your pockets out after this one, it'll start to smell."

Fishing Frenzy is the sustained option — it enriches a node rather than emptying it, so it suits a longer session in one spot. At 43 it also drains the fish's stamina, which shortens each individual catch.

Two mechanics worth knowing before you start:

  • Each net trawl costs 10 stamina, and trawling only works within range of a non-depleted spot.
  • Rod casting needs distance. Cast too weakly or too strongly and you miss — but a miss costs no stamina and no bait. Without bait, junk is more likely.

Why Fishing Became a Survival Skill

Card explaining that fish are the best healing items since potions were removed.

Fishing shipped as a leisurely gathering skill and was promoted by a later update.

The 0.12 health rework removed healing potions entirely — stat potions stayed — and made food restore HP instantly. Jagex were explicit about where that pointed: "we're turning our attention towards our latest skill — Fishing. Food will now serve as a key driver in healing a significant chunk of your HP, quickly. Fish, following RuneScape, will be best in class at healing."

So on a modern build, Fishing is the most direct answer to a group that keeps dying. Not better armour, not more potions — a stocked supply of cooked fish.

That also makes it a sensible role on a shared server. One person fishing supplies the healing for a six-player group, and unlike combat roles it can be done at any time by anyone who happens to be online alone.

Two mechanics that stack with it:

  • Cooking level reduces your burn chance and unlocks better recipes with Perks — and some later recipes carry double Perks.
  • Infernal Rod removes the burn risk entirely for anything you catch with it.

And note the food chain overlap: the Water Barrel rule from Farming means clean and dirty water cannot be mixed, and Jagex's repeated plea — "Stop drinking dirty water people!" — applies to anyone stocking a base kitchen.

Trophies, Quests and the Arrow Grabba

Card covering Pristine Fish trophies and the quests that shipped with Fishing.

Pristine Fish become wall trophies. Catch one and you can "craft a decorative Fishing Trophy out of it, and proudly mount it on your wall." Jagex confirm they do not sing.

This is a recurring reward shape. Mastering an Agility course grants Gold Medals that hang the same way — so a base on a shared server accumulates a visible record of what its players have actually done.

Three quests shipped alongside Fishing, and two of them give items worth having:

Cook's Assistant. "Slopfinger, the overworked Goblin, is desperate to make an impression. A cake should do the trick." The reward is a Victoria Sponge Cake recipe granting a 5-minute buff that reduces your fatigue drain rate — a genuinely useful consumable rather than a flavour item.

Animal Magnetism. Manktongue the Goblin has found "an advert in a bottle with a recipe for something he calls the 'Arrow Grabba'." Build it, place it on your back, and it accumulates arrows you have fired within a radius around you. If anyone in your group plays Ranged, this quest is a priority — recovering spent arrows addresses the single biggest running cost of the build.

A Room With Garou. The Elder Garou has lost his eyesight and wants help building a quiet home for his later years.

All three are deliberate RuneScape callbacks — Cook's Assistant and Animal Magnetism are classic quest names, and Jagex said so: "new quests that channel the classic RuneScape feeling that you've been asking for."

Practical tips

  • Craft the net first — it is what triggers the quest, not the other way round.
  • The net needs coarse thread: Flax plus a Spinning Wheel.
  • Reach Fishing 3 for your first rod; Fishing Frenzy at 10, Infernal Rod at 30, Fishnado at 55.
  • Level 49 raises net catch chance to 75% — the milestone that makes nets reliable.
  • Level 23 cuts fish carry weight by 25%.
  • Infernal Rod cooks catches on contact — no processing step, no burn risk.
  • Fish are best in class at healing since potions were removed. Fishing is a survival skill now.
  • Pristine Fish become wall trophies; level 99 gives the Fishing Skill Cape.
  • Do Animal Magnetism if anyone plays Ranged — the Arrow Grabba recovers spent arrows.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

Fishing is the ideal solo-friendly role on a shared world: one person can stock the group's healing supply during a quiet hour without needing anyone else online. That only works if the world is there when they are. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, applies updates automatically so client and server versions stay matched, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes like 1.0 on 15 September.

Conclusion

Fishing in Dragonwilds starts awkwardly and pays off well. You must unlock coarse thread (Flax plus a Spinning Wheel) and craft a net, which is what prompts the quest from the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village; your first rod comes at Fishing level 3, with Fishing Frenzy at 10, Infernal Rod at 30 and Fishnado at 55. Its three skill spells split cleanly — Fishing Frenzy enriches a node, Fishnado delivers a bulk haul to your backpack, and Infernal Rod cooks catches on contact, skipping processing and the burn risk entirely. The skill's real importance came later: the 0.12 rework removed healing potions and made fish best in class at healing, which turns a fishing supply into your group's survivability. Catch a Pristine Fish for a wall trophy, push to 99 for the Skill Cape, and do Animal Magnetism early if anyone is playing Ranged — the Arrow Grabba recovers arrows you have already fired.
