Everything Iron Gate Have Confirmed About the Deep North

Card summarising confirmed Deep North features in Valheim 1.0.

Iron Gate have been revealing the Deep North one teaser at a time for a year, in monthly devblogs that most people read once and forget. Collected together, they add up to a fairly detailed picture of Valheim's final biome — a shovel for clearing snow, ice you can slip on, lingonberries, a Frost Foundry, and a gate that Iron Gate refuse to talk about. Everything below is confirmed by Iron Gate in their own words. Where they have teased without explaining, we say so rather than guessing.

The Terrain

FeatureWhat Iron Gate said
Deep snow"This will need to be cleared if you want to settle down and build a base"
A craftable shovel"Fortunately you can craft a shovel for this very purpose"
Slippery ice"Careless vikings might easily find themselves stumbling to catch their balance"
Lingonberries"They can be found and harvested in the woods"
Winding tunnelsContain creatures — "they've caused quite a mess above the surface"
Abandoned structuresReferenced while revealing the new roof pieces

The shovel is the most practically important thing on this list. "Deep snow… will need to be cleared if you want to settle down and build a base somewhere" — which means base-building in the Deep North has a preparation step no other biome has, and a tool you must craft before you can start.

Slippery ice is a movement hazard, not a cosmetic one. Iron Gate's phrasing — "one thing to always watch out for" — puts it alongside the biome's threats rather than its scenery.

Lingonberries are the biome's signature crop, described as "perhaps one of our most Swedish aspects of the biome", and "used in several of the biome's food recipes."

The tunnels are where the enemies live. Iron Gate framed them through the Hervor story: "The creatures down in the winding tunnels couldn't best her! How do you think you'll fare once it's your turn to square up against them?"

Crafting and Food

Card listing confirmed Deep North crafting stations and food.

Two crafting additions are confirmed by name:

StationDetail
The Frost Foundry"A brand new addition to your workshop" — revealed as the thing that handles "something even colder"
The LoomAn extension for the Galdr table

The Loom is the more informative of the two, because it tells you the Deep North extends an existing Mistlands station rather than replacing it. Iron Gate mentioned it while "working out some new crafting extensions" — plural, so the two named are unlikely to be all of them.

On the food side, one dish is confirmed outright. Iron Gate ran it as a guessing game across two devblogs and then answered it: "Many of you guessed it: Meatballs with lingonberries, of course! They're just one item on the menu of this biome though, because you'll need plenty of food to sustain yourselves through adventures out in the cold."

"Plenty of food" is the operative phrase. Cold biomes in Valheim have always taxed you — and this is the coldest.

A November teaser was left deliberately unanswered: "We also want to offer you a bit of a mystery this month! It's something to do with the crafting process in the Deep North, can you guess what these things will be used for?" Iron Gate never said. We are not going to speculate.

Building in the Deep North

Card listing confirmed new Valheim building pieces for 1.0.

Three building additions are confirmed, and one comes with actual numbers:

Steeper roofs. Iron Gate: "We want to properly confirm that the update will add the possibility to build steeper roofs! The 67° roof pieces will be 4 metres high, and available for both the thatch and the darkwood roof styles."

That is unusually specific for a teaser — an angle, a height, and two material styles. Builders have been asking for steeper pitches for years, and this is a direct answer.

A drawbridge. "You have asked for a drawbridge for quite some time, and we are happy to finally be able to offer you one."

New furniture from a new wood. Iron Gate described "new furniture pieces, made from a new type of wood found in the biome. They're a bit chunkier than what we've had so far, and both the chair and the table have some decorative designs carved into them."

Note what that implies: a new wood type means a new gathering step, and a new material tier for furniture — not just reskins of existing pieces.

Hervor Bloodtooth, and the Gate

Card explaining the Hervor Bloodtooth story series and what it hints at.

Iron Gate ran a serialised story through the devblogs called The Voyage of Hervor Bloodtooth, concluding in February 2026. It is lore rather than patch notes, but two lines from its conclusion are worth reading carefully:

"Hervor's story took place quite a long time ago, in a Deep North that's a little bit different from the biome that you will explore yourselves, but perhaps there might still be some traces left of her for you to find…"

That is a fairly clear signal that Hervor appears in the biome as findable content — ruins, remains, or something similar. Iron Gate did not say what.

"One thing that will still remain standing despite the passage of time is of course the massive structure that marks the end of Hervor's journey. What lies beyond this gate shall remain a mystery for all but the truly worthy, however."

A massive structure with a gate, at the end of the final biome of the game. Iron Gate have refused to elaborate, and given that Ashlands was described as "the penultimate biome", this is the natural place for whatever concludes Valheim's progression. We are not going to claim what is behind it.

Three more confirmed items round out the 1.0 picture:

  • Over 50 achievements. "You've been asking for achievements for a long time, and we're happy to say that there will be over 50 of them." Iron Gate have not revealed the criteria.
  • Development focus. After Call to Arms shipped, "we're now focusing the team solely on content for the Deep North and 1.0. Armour sets are being designed, dungeons are getting fleshed out, and enemies are being animated."
  • A Gamescom trailer. Premiering during the event, with the tease "we will be seeing some familiar faces…"

And Iron Gate's own recommendation, repeated at every opportunity: "we recommend that you start a new playthrough to get the best possible Valheim experience" — while acknowledging "many of you will want to visit the Deep North as soon as you can."

Practical tips

  • Craft a shovel. Deep snow must be cleared before you can build a base there.
  • Ice is slippery — a real movement hazard, not scenery.
  • Lingonberries are harvested in the woods and feed several recipes, including meatballs with lingonberries.
  • The Frost Foundry is a new workshop station; the Loom extends the Galdr table.
  • 67° roof pieces, 4 m high, in thatch and darkwood.
  • A drawbridge is confirmed, plus furniture from a new biome wood.
  • Over 50 achievements ship with 1.0.
  • Iron Gate recommend a fresh playthrough for the best experience.

Running your own Valheim server

A final biome is the kind of content a group works through together over months, which makes it exactly the wrong thing to keep inside one person's hosted session. A gamever Valheim server keeps your world online around the clock for up to 10 players, takes one-click backups — worth having before a version as significant as 1.0 — and applies updates so client and server versions never drift apart.

Conclusion

The Deep North has been revealed a piece at a time, and collected together Iron Gate have confirmed a great deal. The terrain brings deep snow that must be cleared with a craftable shovel before you can build, slippery ice you can stumble on, lingonberries harvested in the woods, and winding tunnels housing the biome's creatures. Crafting gains the Frost Foundry and a Loom extension for the Galdr table, with more extensions hinted at. Building gains 67° roof pieces at 4 metres in thatch and darkwood, a long-requested drawbridge, and furniture made from a new biome wood. Meatballs with lingonberries is the one confirmed dish, on a menu Iron Gate say you will need "plenty of". And the Voyage of Hervor Bloodtooth ends at a massive structure and a gate whose contents Iron Gate will only describe as a mystery "for all but the truly worthy" — fitting, since Ashlands was called the penultimate biome, making this the last one.
