Every Tree in Valheim: Eight Types, Four Axe Tiers, and Forests That Never Grow Back
Valheim has eight tree types, and the most important fact about all of them is one line on the wiki: "Cut forests do not regrow." Small saplings do not mature, and nothing replaces what you fell. The only way to get a forest back is to plant one with a Cultivator — and three of the eight cannot be planted at all.

The axe tier is the real gate, not the health. A Beech at 80 HP and a Birch at 80 HP are identical to chop through — but the Birch needs a Bronze axe, which means beating Eikthyr and mining copper and tin first.
Oak is the toughest ordinary tree at 200 HP, with a 160 HP stump and 140 HP small logs — the whole tree is a longer job than anything else in the Meadows.
The Scorched Tree is the surprise. At 200 HP it matches Oak, but it only needs a Stone axe — the Ashlands gate it, not the tool.

Oak is worth two and a half Birches. Its small log gives 25 drops against Birch's 10, at the same 50/50 Wood-to-Finewood split — so a single Oak yields roughly 12–13 Finewood where a Birch yields 5.
Every stump gives 2 Wood, with one exception: a Scorched Tree stump gives 2 Ashwood.
Large logs always break into 2 small logs, so the published small-log figures are per half-tree.
Beech and Fir give no special wood at all — they are pure Wood trees, which is why they stay useful all game for building and charcoal rather than for crafting.
What Falls Out Alongside
Chopping a tree also has a 50% chance to drop extra items, and the tables differ:

Pine is the best resin tree at 44.44%, nearly three times a Beech or Fir's 16.67%.
Oak is the best feather tree of the seed-bearing trees at 20%, though the Yggdrasil shoot's 50% beats everything.
Three trees drop no seeds. Ancient Trees, Yggdrasil shoots and Scorched Trees produce nothing plantable — the wiki states they "do not produce seeds and cannot be planted with the cultivator."
Farming Trees Instead of Finding Them
Since forests never come back on their own, a tree farm is the only renewable wood supply:
- A sapling matures in a random 3,000 to 8,000 seconds — 50 minutes to 2 hours 13 minutes of real time, or roughly 1.67 to 4.44 in-game days.
- Plant saplings 4 metres apart. Overcrowding eliminates some saplings as neighbouring trees mature.
- Measure the spacing with poles, using two 2-metre beams as a temporary ruler.
- Only five trees can be farmed: Beech, Fir, Pine, Birch and Oak — via Beech seeds, Fir cones, Pine cones, Birch seeds and Acorns.
- Acorns are the rarest seed, and they are the only route to farmed Oak — the best Finewood tree in the game.
Protect your Acorns above everything else. At a 40% drop chance on a tree that already needs a Bronze axe, and with 25 drops per small log, an Oak farm is the single highest-value wood investment available.

Health does not track the tier: a Scorched Tree at 200 HP falls to a Stone axe while an 80 HP Birch does not. Beech and Fir give only Wood; Pine gives Corewood; Ancient Trees give Ancient bark; Yggdrasil shoots give Yggdrasil wood; and the Scorched Tree gives Ashwood at 66.67%, including from its stump. The rule that shapes everything is that cut forests do not regrow — so plant saplings 4 metres apart, expect 50 minutes to 2 hours 13 minutes per tree, and remember Ancient Trees, Yggdrasil shoots and Scorched Trees cannot be planted at all.
