Every Hide and Pelt in Valheim: Seven Skins, and Only One Is Heavy

Hides on a tanning rack in Valheim.

Valheim has seven hides and pelts, and each one gates a specific armour set. Six of them weigh 1.0 or less and stack to 50. The exception is Troll hide at 2.0 weight and a stack of only 20 — twice the weight and less than half the stack of everything else.

That makes a troll hunt the heaviest hide run in the game, and it is also one of the earliest. Two biomes carry two skins each: the Black Forest has Troll hide and Bear hide, and the Ashlands has Asksvin hide alongside the Lox pelt you brought with you.

All seven teleport, so the only carrying problem is the trip itself.

A full Troll hide stack weighs 40 against a full Deer hide stack's 50 — but at a cap of 20 against 50, troll hide consumes inventory slots two and a half times faster. Plan a shorter trip, or bring a cart.

Scale hide is the lightest at 0.5, which is fitting for the Mistlands, where every other material is a fight.

Only one comes from a passive creature. Scale hide drops from Hares, the Mistlands' single harmless entry — every other hide on this list requires killing something that fights back.

Two hides have two sources each. Bear hide drops from both Bears and Viles, and Asksvin hide from both Asksvin and Asksvin Hatchlings — which makes them easier to accumulate than their tier suggests.

What Each One Builds

HideArmour and gear
Deer hideKarve, Longship, Forge bellows, Tanning rack, Deer rug, Stone throne, Dragon bed, Darkwood chair
Troll hideTroll leather helmet, tunic and pants, Troll hide cape, Ancient bark spear, Horn of Celebration, Barber station
Wolf peltWolf armor chest and legs, Drake helmet, Wolf fur cape, Fenris coat, leggings and hood, Dragon bed, Wolf rug, Stone throne
Lox peltLox cape, Bracelets of the Brave, Hood, Breastplate and Trousers of Ask, Ashwood bed, Lox rug
Bear hideHeaddress, Patterns, Loincloth and Paws of the Bear, Celebratory cap, Bearskin rug
Asksvin hideAshen cape, Asksvin cloak, Berserkir Axes, Breastplate of Ask, Basalt bomb, Ashwood bed, Asksvin rug
Scale hideBlack marble throne, Hare rug, Mistlands gear

Deer hide is infrastructure, not armour. It builds the Karve, the Longship, the Forge bellows and the Tanning rack — three of which are gates on your whole progression, and none of which is a piece of clothing.

Wolf pelt carries two full armour sets. The Wolf set and the Fenris set both run on it, which makes the Mountain the single most pelt-hungry biome.

Lox pelt spans two tiers. Beyond the Plains' Lox cape and Bracelets of the Brave, it is required for the Ashlands' entire Ask set — so Lox hunting does not stop when you leave the Plains.

Scale hide is decorative. The Black marble throne and the Hare rug are its distinctive uses, making it the furnishing material of the Mistlands rather than its armour.

The Two Related Materials

Card on Valheim leather scraps and chitin.

Two more skin-adjacent materials sit outside the hide list:

Leather scrapsweight 0.5, stack 50, dropped by Boars and Bats, mined from Muddy scrap piles, and found in Meadows chests. They build the Raft, the Tanning rack, the Cartography table, the Mead ketill, the Armor stand, the Archery target and most of the banner set. It is the most widely used soft material in the game and the easiest to get.

Chitinweight 2.0, stack 50, described as "a shard of crustacean shell." It is mined from Abyssal barnacles on Leviathans — the living, moving islands of the Ocean — or dropped by Coral cod at 13.33% for 1–2, though catching those needs Heavy fishing bait.

Chitin is the hardest ordinary material to source in the game, because a Leviathan is a creature you have to find at sea and mine before it submerges.

It weighs the same as Troll hide at 2.0, which is heavy for a shell fragment.

Planning a Hide Run

Card advising how to farm Valheim hides efficiently.

  • Deer hide first, and more than you think. The Karve, the Longship and the Forge bellows all want it, and none of them is optional.
  • Troll hide has two sources. Beyond Trolls themselves, it is a bonus drop from Trollfish — a fishing route to an armour set.
  • Look in Troll Cave chests and Fuling Village roofs for Deer hide. Both are documented alternatives to hunting deer.
  • Budget inventory for troll hide. At stack 20, fifty hides fill three slots, where fifty deer hides fill one.
  • Keep hunting Lox after the Plains. The Ask set is Ashlands gear made from Plains hide.
  • Take Hares opportunistically. Scale hide comes from the only harmless thing in the Mistlands, so it costs nothing but a bow shot.

Conclusion

Valheim has seven hides and pelts: Deer hide in the Meadows, Troll hide and Bear hide in the Black Forest, Wolf pelt in the Mountain, Lox pelt in the Plains, Scale hide in the Mistlands and Asksvin hide in the Ashlands — so two biomes carry two apiece. Six of them weigh 1.0 or less and stack to 50; Troll hide is the outlier at 2.0 weight and a stack of just 20, filling inventory slots more than twice as fast as anything else. Deer hide is infrastructure rather than armour — the Karve, Longship, Forge bellows and Tanning rack all need it — while Wolf pelt carries two complete armour sets and Lox pelt spans two tiers, running the Plains' Lox cape and the Ashlands' entire Ask set. Scale hide is the Mistlands' decorative material, and the only hide dropped by a passive creature. Bear hide builds the whole Bear set from Bears and Viles, and Asksvin hide — from Asksvin and their hatchlings — is the busiest of the seven, feeding the Ashen cape, the Asksvin cloak, the Berserkir Axes and the Breastplate of Ask. Beside them sit Leather scraps, the most widely used soft material in the game, and Chitin, the hardest — mined from Abyssal barnacles on Leviathans or dropped by Coral cod at 13.33% on Heavy fishing bait.
