Every Armour Tier in Dragonwilds, and the Set Bonuses Nobody Reads

Card showing the three Dragonwilds armour classes and their set bonuses.

A full melee set in Dragonwilds does not just add defence — it gives you −33% block stamina cost, +50% crit chance after blocking and +25% damage against staggered targets. Those three lines are printed nowhere obvious, and mixing a magic hat with a steel platebody quietly throws all of them away. Armour here follows the RuneScape combat triangle, and the set bonus is usually worth more than the raw numbers. Here is every tier, what each class actually gives you, and the one number that makes the whole table easy to remember.

On sourcing. Jagex do not publish an armour table. The values below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.

The Three Set Bonuses

Armour occupies the head, chest, leg and cape slots, and every piece belongs to one of three classes.

Pieces wornMelee setRanged setMagic set
1/3−33% block stamina cost+40 stealth speed−50% stamina regen delay
2/3+50% crit chance after blocking−33% ranged attack stamina cost+10% magic attack speed
3/3+25% damage to staggered targets+25% weak point damage+15% magic crit chance

Read those columns as three different playstyles, not three power levels.

  • Melee's bonuses are all about the block. Cheaper blocks, a crit window after blocking, and extra damage on staggered targets — and since parrying is one of only three ways to stagger, the melee set rewards exactly the loop the combat rework was built around.
  • Ranged's bonuses are about opening and closing. Stealth speed to reach a firing position, cheaper shots, and +25% weak point damage for the shots that land where you aimed.
  • Magic's are about uptime. A halved stamina regen delay, faster casts and a crit chance on top.

The practical consequence is that mixing classes costs you more than it looks. Two melee pieces and one magic hat gives you the 2/3 melee bonus and nothing at all from the magic side — the 1/3 magic bonus requires the magic piece to be part of a magic set you are not wearing.

The Tier Ladder

Card listing every Dragonwilds armour tier by power level.

Crafted armour runs from power level 2 to power level 7, and each class has one "default" line plus optional side sets at the same tier.

Power levelMeleeRangedMagic
2ReinforcedLeatherApprentice
3BronzeHard leatherWizard
4IronStudded leatherDark mage
5SteelGreen dragonhideSplitbark
6MithrilBlue dragonhideMystic
7AdamantRed dragonInfinity

Here is the number that makes this table easy to remember. The chest piece's defence against its own class is identical for melee and magic at every tier:

    15 → 23 → 30 → 38 → 45 → 53

    Ranged chests sit exactly two points lower at every tier13 → 21 → 28 → 36 → 43 → 51.

So the three classes are not balanced against each other by raw defence at all. They are separated by their off-class numbers and their set bonuses. An Iron platebody gives 30 melee / 24 ranged / 23 magic — a seven-point spread. A studded leather body gives 24 / 28 / 24 — a four-point spread, and equal defence against melee and magic.

That makes ranged armour the generalist, weakest in its own lane but the least punished for facing the wrong enemy.

The Side Sets

Card listing the alternative Dragonwilds armour sets and where their recipes come from.

At most tiers there is a second set with identical statistics and a different source. They are cosmetic-plus-provenance rather than upgrades:

SetClassPower levelWhere the recipe comes from
Paladin'sMelee4Exploring the Takla Kara Dragonkin vault

ShadowRanged6Recipe vestiges from Postie Pete
ZamorakMagic6Recipe vestiges from Postie Pete
ObsidianMelee7Armour bench
Kalphite carapaceRanged7Armour bench
Lunar GarouMagic7Armour bench

Two of these are worth singling out.

The Obsidian and Kalphite sets are the cheapest power level 7 armour in the game by ingredient count — Obsidian chest needs only 18 Refined Obsidian and 14 Scorch Leather, against the Adamant platebody's six separate materials including Garou Weave and Gypsum Wax. Same defence, far less logistics.

And the Desert set is not armour at all in the usual sense. The Desert hood, robes and legs list no defence values, but carry Resist Scorch Buildup — and additional pieces further increase Scorch resistance. In Umbral Sands, where prolonged sun exposure drains hydration, that is a survival item rather than a combat one.

Capes, Shields and the Odd Ones

Card explaining Dragonwilds capes, shields and utility armour.

Almost every cape in the game gives 2 melee / 2 ranged / 2 magic defence and nothing else. There are dozens — regional patterns, adventurer's colours in nine shades, hex and dyad capes from the Evil Emporium — and they are cosmetics.

    Two are not:

CapeDefenceSource
Fire cape4 / 4 / 4Completing the Fight Caves
Obsidian cape4 / 4 / 4Completing Brink Of Extinction

The Fire cape also carries Burning Endurance"receiving or blocking damage has a chance to trigger Burning on your attacker", and melee kills on burning enemies refill stamina. It is the only cape in the game that changes how a fight plays.

Shields are the other half of the defensive picture, and they are equipped in the off-hand:

ShieldPower levelBlock
Torch — the starting shield15
Wooden shield126
Leather shield233
Bronze / Anti-dragon339
Iron / Dragonblight446
Steel / Fallen hoplite's aspis / Dragoncurse552
Mithril / Black659
Adamant / Dragonfire765
Toktz-ket-xil755

The Toktz-ket-xil is the exception worth understanding. At power level 7 it blocks 55 rather than 65 — but it grants increased melee crit damage. It trades defence for offence, and it is the only shield that does.

And four shields carry Dragon Breath Resistance — the Anti-dragon, Dragonblight, Dragoncurse and Dragonfire shields all block incoming dragon fire, which normal shields do not.

Two finally, on utility pieces that ignore the whole system:

  • Leggings of lightness give 0 defence but +50 carry weight and reduced fall speed.
  • The Angler's hat gives 1 / 1 / 1 and a +10% chance not to deplete a fishing spot.

Practical tips

  • A full same-class set is worth more than the defence numbers. Mixing classes forfeits the bonus entirely.
  • Melee 3/3 gives +25% damage to staggered targets — the payoff for parrying.
  • Ranged 3/3 gives +25% weak point damage; magic 3/3 gives +15% magic crit chance.
  • Chest defence in its own class is 15/23/30/38/45/53 by tier — ranged is two lower.
  • Ranged armour is the generalist, with the flattest profile against off-class damage.
  • Obsidian and Kalphite carapace are the cheapest power level 7 sets to craft.
  • Desert robes list no defence — they exist for Scorch resistance in Umbral Sands.
  • The Fire cape and Obsidian cape give 4/4/4; every other cape gives 2.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

Gearing a group means somebody has to bank the bars, the leather and the vault shards between sessions — and that only works when the world and its chests are still there when everyone logs back in. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds' armour is built on the RuneScape combat triangle, with melee, ranged and magic sets each carrying three cumulative set bonuses — melee's built around blocking and staggering, ranged's around stealth and weak point damage, magic's around stamina regen delay and cast speed. Tiers run from power level 2 to 7Reinforced/Bronze/Iron/Steel/Mithril/Adamant for melee, Leather through Red dragon for ranged, Apprentice through Infinity for magic — and the chest piece's own-class defence follows the same ladder for melee and magic (15/23/30/38/45/53), with ranged consistently two points lower but the flattest profile against off-class damage. Side sets like Paladin's, Fallen hoplite's, Black Knight and Zamorak match the standard sets statistically and differ only in where the recipe comes from, while Obsidian and Kalphite carapace are the cheapest power level 7 sets to actually build. Add the Fire cape's Burning Endurance, the four shields that resist dragon fire, and the Desert set's Scorch resistance, and the useful rule is simple: wear three of one class, and pick the class that matches how you fight.
