Draugr and Surtlings in Valheim: The Swamp's Two Ranged Threats

The Valheim Swamp at night.

The Swamp's melee enemies are the ones people talk about, but its two ranged threats are what actually kill players crossing open water. The Draugr fires a bow for 48 Pierce. The Surtling throws fireballs for 40 Fire. They have 100 and 20 health respectively, and almost nothing else in common — including their weaknesses, which are exact opposites.

The Draugr is resistant to Fire. The Surtling is immune to it. Between them they close off the one damage type that carries you through the Black Forest, which is a large part of why the Swamp feels like a difficulty spike rather than a step.

The Draugr

100 health at zero stars, and it comes in two flavours that share a stat block: an axe version and a bow version. The bow is the one that matters.

AttackDamageCooldown
Axe48 Slash, 15 Chop3s
Bow48 Pierce4s

Both attacks deal 48 damage, which is a real number against Bronze armour, and the bow version delivers it from across water you are trying to cross. A Draugr village on the far bank is a firing line.

Its resistance profile is the standard Undead one: resistant to Fire, immune to Poison, 50% stagger threshold. What it is not resistant to is Blunt or Slash, which is why a mace works and why Frostner — Blunt plus Frost plus Spirit — is so effective in the Swamp generally.

Draugr drop Entrails and a trophy. Entrails are the input for Sausages4 Entrails, 1 Boar meat and 1 Thistle in a level 2 Cauldron, yielding four servings at 55 health and 18 stamina each. That is the second-highest health food in the Swamp, behind only Serpent stew at 80, and far easier to source. Draugr farming has a purpose beyond clearing the path.

They also appear well outside the Swamp: Draugr villages, Sunken Crypts, and sometimes Mountain towers — the last of which surprises players who assumed the Mountain was wolves and drakes only.

The Surtling

Card showing Surtling weaknesses: Frost and Water, and its fire-geyser spawn.

20 health. It is one of the frailest creatures in the game, and it is a Demon rather than an Undead, with a correspondingly different resistance list: immune to Fire, Poison and Spirit; weak to Frost and Water.

Weak to Water is the entry that changes how you fight it, because the Swamp is constantly raining. Rain reduces the damage of the Surtling's fireball attack significantly, which is why Surtlings encountered in the Swamp are far less dangerous than their 40 Fire damage suggests. The same creature met somewhere dry is a different proposition.

Its fireball does 10 Blunt and 40 Fire on a 3-second cooldown — the shortest ranged cooldown of the two — but at 20 health, a single arrow ends it.

Surtlings spawn near Fire geysers in the Swamp, which are fixed locations. That makes them the most farmable enemy in the biome, and the reason to farm them is:

DropUse
Surtling coreSmelter, Charcoal Kiln, Portals
CoalSmelting fuel
Surtling trophyDecoration

Surtling cores gate your entire metal industry. A Smelter needs them, a Charcoal Kiln needs them, and every Portal needs them. A known fire geyser with a Surtling spawn is one of the most valuable map pins in an early game, and unlike most farms it does not deplete.

Fighting Both

Card listing the loadout for Swamp ranged threats: no fire, bring blunt and frost.

  • Leave the Fire Arrows at home. Draugr resist fire; Surtlings are immune. The Black Forest loadout is actively wrong here.
  • Blunt and Frost are the Swamp answer. Frostner covers both, and the Surtling is specifically weak to Frost.
  • Shoot Draugr archers first. 48 Pierce at 4-second intervals across water is the single largest source of unavoidable damage on a Swamp crossing.
  • Do not fear Surtlings in the rain. Water weakness plus constant Swamp rain means their fireball hits far softer than its 40 Fire suggests.
  • Pin every fire geyser you find. Surtling cores are not optional, and the spawn does not run out.
  • Both stagger at 50%. That is 50 damage on a Draugr and 10 on a Surtling — trivially reachable on the latter.

A fire geyser you found on Tuesday should still be there on Friday, with the Surtlings respawned and the cores waiting. A gamever Valheim server keeps that world persistent for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.

Conclusion

The Swamp's two ranged enemies want opposite counters. The Draugr has 100 / 200 / 300 health, fires a bow for 48 Pierce every 4 seconds or swings an axe for 48 Slash, and is resistant to Fire and immune to Poison — a standard Undead profile that Blunt damage answers cleanly. Its Entrails feed Sausages, and it appears in Draugr villages, Sunken Crypts and occasionally Mountain towers, not just the Swamp. The Surtling has just 20 health, is a Demon rather than Undead, and is immune to Fire, Poison and Spirit while being weak to Frost and Water — and since the Swamp rains constantly, the rain itself blunts its 40 Fire fireball. It spawns at fixed fire geysers, which makes it the biome's one non-depleting farm, and its Surtling cores gate Smelters, Charcoal Kilns and every Portal you will ever build. The single most important takeaway is negative: fire is the wrong damage type against both, so the loadout that carried you through the Black Forest has to change at the Swamp border.
