Dragonwilds Chest Drop Rates: The Numbers Behind What You Actually Find

Card explaining how Dragonwilds chest drop rates are expressed.

A chest that can drop a Skill Tome gives you roughly a 9-in-100 chance of a specific one — and that number is identical for eight different skills. Dragonwilds' chest loot runs on documented drop tables where rarity is a float out of 100, and reading them changes what you farm. The most useful finding: the mount you thought was five times more expensive is actually the cheap one, because the currency it costs drops at ten times the rate. Here are the tables that matter.

On sourcing. Jagex do not publish drop tables. The figures below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.

How the Numbers Work

The wiki is explicit about the format: "the rarity is based on the cache's drop table system, and is represented as a float value over 100 — e.g. rate = 4.5 means that the rarity is 4.5/100."

So a rarity of 9/100 is a 9% chance, not one in nine. And drop tables are regional: "the type of drops is dependent on the region; several tiered areas around Ashenfall have items that correspond to the natural resources in the area."

Some entries are marked always, meaning guaranteed rather than rolled:

DropQuantityRarity
Rune Essence6–12Always
Wheat Seeds1–3Always

And the vault drop table is worth memorising, because vaults are where gear materials come from:

DropQuantityRarity
Stone12–2440/100
Vault Shard4–640/100
Rune Essence6–1220/100

Vault Shards at 40/100 for 4–6 at a time is the number that matters. Almost every piece of power level 4 and 5 gear needs them — an Iron platebody takes 3, a Steel platebody takes 6 — and this is the supply.

Skill Tomes and Potions

Card showing Dragonwilds Skill Tome and potion drop rates.

Skill Tomes grant fixed experience, which makes them disproportionately valuable to a low-level character on a curve where 99 costs 1,000,000 experience.

Volume 1 tomes sit at 9/100 each — with one exception:

TomeRarity
Tome of the Artisan — Vol 110/100
Attack, Construction, Cooking, Magic, Mining, Ranged, Runecrafting — Vol 19/100 each

Artisan is the one favoured skill in the Volume 1 table, marginally. And note which skills are absent from it: Volume 1 has no Farming, Fishing, Woodcutting or Agility tome — those appear in the Volume 2 tables, which run across power levels 4 and 5 in two tiers, at 14.3/100 in the first tier and 9–10/100 in the second.

Potions are the largest single table with 57 entries, and they cluster tightly:

Potion groupRarity
Weak Focused Artisan Potion7.3/100
Weak Focused Attack / Construction / Cooking / Mining / Runecrafting / Woodcutting7.2/100 each
Weak Antipoison Potion7.2/100

That flatness is the point. You cannot farm a chest for a specific potion — the table is deliberately even, so chests are a general supply and the Brewing Cauldron is how you get what you actually need.

Runes are worth a look too, because the rates are not even:

RuneQuantityRarity
Nature Rune10–2025/100
Astral, Earth, Fire, Law10–2015/100 each

Nature Runes drop at two-thirds again the rate of the others, and Law Runes — the teleportation rune, gated behind Runecrafting 50 — drop at the same 15/100 as the rest. If lodestone travel is your bottleneck, chests are a real supplement to crafting them.

The Currency Table Changes What Mounts Cost

Card comparing Dragonwilds currency drop rates against mount prices.

Dragonwilds has three non-convertible regional currencies, and each drops in three quantity bands with the same 70 / 20 / 10 rarity split:

Currency70/10020/10010/100Average per chest
Soul Fragment (Fellhollow)10–1515–2525–40~16
Infernal Fragment (Dowdun Reach)3–57–1012–15~5.9
Garou Chit (Umbral Sands)40–5050–8080–120~54.5

Now put those against what mounts cost, and the sticker prices invert:

Mount currencyPriceAverage per chestChests needed
Soul Fragment2,000~16~125
Garou Chit9,999~54.5~183
Infernal Fragment2,000~5.9~340

The 9,999 Garou Chit mount is not five times the grind of a 2,000-fragment one — it is roughly half again. And the genuinely expensive mount is the Infernal Fragment one at 2,000, which needs nearly three times as many chests as the Garou Chit mount despite costing a fifth as much on paper.

We have described the Garou Chit price as five times the work elsewhere. That was reading the sticker price rather than the drop rate, and it is wrong.

Because the currencies do not convert, this is time in a specific region, not money. The cheapest cosmetic mounts in the game are Death's, in Fellhollow.

What Chests Are Actually For

Card summarising what Dragonwilds chest drop tables are best farmed for.

Looking at the table sizes tells you what chests are designed to deliver:

TableEntries
Power level 3 wood, herbs and plants106
Potions57
Dowdun Reach banners38
Skill Tomes35
Garou decorations15
Coloured lights13
Dragonkin decorations10
Currency9
Mounts9

Two-thirds of the chest system is materials and decorations. Chests are a resource and cosmetic pipeline, not a gear pipeline — weapons and armour come from recipes and benches, not from loot.

The mount table is the exception, and it is flat: nine terrorbird variants at 33 or 34/100 each. Springdown Runner, Grassfoot Screecher, Leafwood Strider, Summerbellied Wagtail, Eclipseborn Sharpbeak, Sunkissed Clawfoot, Scorchsummer Ashbeak, Applefeather Mosstail and Crimson Crybaby all drop at effectively one-in-three from the tables that carry them. The bottleneck is finding the chest, not winning the roll.

On a shared server, three habits follow from all of this:

  1. Split chest routes by region, since currencies do not convert and tables are regional. Two players farming the same region duplicate effort a third player in another region would not.
  2. Hand Skill Tomes to whoever is lowest. They grant fixed experience, so a tome is worth dramatically more at level 40 than at 90.
  3. Do not farm chests for potions. The 7.2/100 flatness across 57 entries means you will get a random assortment; the Brewing Cauldron gets you the one you need.

And remember chests respawn. They are a renewable route, which is what makes drop-rate arithmetic worth doing at all.

Practical tips

  • Rarity is a value out of 1009/100 means 9%, not one in nine.
  • Drop tables are regional and follow the local resources.
  • Vault chests: Stone and Vault Shards at 40/100, Rune Essence at 20/100.
  • Volume 1 Skill Tomes are 9/100 each; Artisan is 10/100.
  • Potions are flat at ~7.2/100 across 57 entries — do not farm chests for a specific one.
  • Nature Runes drop at 25/100; the other four at 15/100.
  • Soul Fragment mounts need ~125 chests; Garou Chit ~183; Infernal Fragment ~340.
  • The 9,999 price tag is not the expensive one — the 2,000 Infernal one is.
  • Terrorbird variants drop at 33–34/100 — finding the chest is the hard part.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

Chest routes are a repeatable loop across several regions, and repeatable loops only pay off on a world your group can return to on their own schedules. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds' chest loot runs on documented drop tables where rarity is a value out of 100, varying by region to match local resources. Vault chests give Stone and Vault Shards at 40/100 and Rune Essence at 20/100, which is the supply line behind almost all power level 4 and 5 gear. Volume 1 Skill Tomes sit at 9/100 eachArtisan alone at 10 — while the 57-entry potion table is deliberately flat at around 7.2/100, making chests a general supply rather than a way to target anything specific. The most useful arithmetic is on currency: because Soul Fragments average about 16 per chest, Garou Chits about 54.5 and Infernal Fragments about 5.9, the 2,000-fragment Fellhollow mount takes roughly 125 chests, the 9,999-chit Umbral Sands mount around 183, and the 2,000-fragment Dowdun Reach mount nearly 340 — so the highest sticker price is not the biggest grind, and the lowest one is. Overall the tables show what chests are for: 106 entries of power level 3 wood, herbs and plants, 38 banners, dozens of decorations. Chests are a materials and cosmetics pipeline; gear comes from recipes and benches.
